It's certainly not uncommon for Apple to preload Macs with different builds of OS X than what is on the DVD. It's possible the video may be more of a 'Welcome to The Mac' than 'Welcome to OS X' - in which case they'd likely make it play when someone first boots their new Mac, but for people upgrading from Snow Leopard it wouldn't be required.

That's what I just argued, but apparently I'm wrong...

wait...there are actual fans of that stupid video? After imaging, reinstalling and upgrading high hundreds if not thousands of user accounts/machines I can say I am happy I can get those future spare hours of my life back to me. That music sends a chill down my spine every time I hear it, and I want to punch people when they have it as their goddamn ringtone

And another lol

They should just build it into the firmware....

*ducks*

Let the vote downs begin!

20 MB???? That's almost 10 minutes of pornography! Priorities, man!

20MB for the video and 1.1MB for the audio track. Approximately 21MB for the entire welcome splash. Even an SSD of 120/128GB it would pose no space issue for me. If the video is there great if not, not a deal breaker. :)

Can't believe 9 pages of posts are actually frakin discussing the welcome video. WTF! I was hoping for more posts about the GM itself etc. but yeah, WTF!

Now is this GM RC1 or might there be a GM RC2 on its way. Considering there is no physical DVD to send a GM version to the DVD Duplicator for packing and delivery, why not take the time to not have buggy elements. Besides if it needs to be loaded on a new MBA or other Mac it can be downloaded by the China manufacturer for installation. Unless the MBA have to be on a ship and in an Apple Store for the 14th of July. Any thoughts on this? :)

I don't really see the point you are trying to make. This is not an iOS release.

Doesn't really make much difference. Any number of other companies have occasionally had to release a second or, rarely, a third GM before getting it nailed down.

Dang, I liked that video. My first (and current) Mac ran leopard, and when I first turned it on, wow. Classy, and a pretty sweet welcome to the OS. For someone just starting it up to a desktop its kinda like "here it is". With the video it felt special the first time you turned it on. Not a deal breaker, but I hope they add it.

That's because it's not a new OS. It's a glorified service pack. It requires 10.6 to install, is only available as a download on the app store, there's no option to install on a formatted disk, etc. From what I can tell, it's basically a collection of libraries that installs over Snow Leopard.

That's a shocker of a post!
How much truth is in that? Just an overwrite of old files?

Very little, and no.

1) Numerous beta tester have reported successfully doing clean installs by extracting the installer .dmg file, burning to DVD, and installing from it.

2) The Mac App store is Apple's current preferred distribution method. And you can still use the download to create an install disc...

3) And yet, there are those reported clean installs...

4) ... Never mind ...

We'll see who's right in a few more days.

I'm betting on beta testers with actual experience, frankly.

I have to say I'm not bothered by it being gone- in fact I like the fact that it's not there. The less "filler" data there is the better. This video only gets played once and then sits on the HD forever, taking up space. Sure hard drives are bigger than ever now, but that is no excuse to waste it needlessly.

Smh. You're what's wrong with the world.

QUOTE=TheBen;12865027]Apple kind of deprived people who use a Dual Screen setup.
When you use an application in Full Screen mode, the second screen gets the grey linen background automatically and you can't use it whatsoever (except for moving your mouse cursor there, (yet?)), kind of bumps me out, because I really like both using a Dual Screen setup and full screen apps.[/QUOTE]

Aperture 3 lets you define what shows in the second monitor when it's in fullscreen mode. Perhaps others are following in train...

Too bad I won't be able to use anything outside of 2-finger gestures (2007 MBP).

That is, until I get my new MBP next year!

Use the Magic Trackpad. Fully compatible with all gestures, provided you run at least SL.

Shame

When I switched from PC to Mac two years ago, that welcome video was like a shining beam from the heavens to my wide-eyed self. Boy, was I pumped about my new computer.

But superfluous in the end, I suppose.

Without Rosetta this is going to be a BIG FAIL

So don't upgrade. It's not miniature ninjas are going to break in through your mail slot and force you to do it.

You might be surprised at the number of Mac users who came on after the Intel switch, who have no idea at all what you're on about.

No one I know is going to install it as it will break their favorite apps. How hard can it be to add Rosetta as an add-on so people don't have to spend a fortune to replace perfectly good apps that they already like using and know how to use them and don't need to relearn a bloated update?

Find an old Mac that will run it, and stash it away to keep the old app going.

I've been using Macs since '85, and looking at all the PowerPC apps taking up disk space here ... I'm not going to miss any of them particularly, having either already replaced them with something else, or find that I haven't used them at all for a very long time. I really don't need the help files for a printer that died years ago.

I will miss Jared, "El Carnicero de Canciones" from Freeverse Software. Perhaps there's an updated version...

aww thats too bad. I actually liked the old welcome video. my first mac had leopard installed on it, so that welcome video was a definite surprise. snow leopard had the same video, so that was disappointing. I was actually looking forward to a cool new video for lion. oh well, I guess I'll survive without it.

No one I know has any remote idea as to what Rosetta is. Without Rosetta, it's just a small group of people (Quicken users and people find it too cost-prohibitive to replace 6-year-old software) that suffer from this "BIG FAIL".
