Unseated and re-seated both ram sticks several times to make sure there was good contact.

Reboot.... got the horrible sound almost immediately when playing youtube videos. :(

Out of ideas.

By the way, before you take it in, make a Time Machine backup. That way you can restore to your loner or replacement iMac and won't have to re-install everything.

Man.... what a madhouse. Got to the mall that has the apple store in it, 45 minutes early and it took 40 mins to park!!! Bumper to bumper cluster-F in the parking lot.

Then was on the opposite side of the mall, so had to run a quarter mile with a 27" iMac to make my appointment just in time... and im SICK.

So I get to the store, and its a madhouse. Like a nightclub... squishing through bodies to get to the genius bar. Good thing I had an appointment. Im having a BAD WEEK I tell you.

Then murphys law nearly strikes and we cant replicate the issue. Of course! right?

I give it a shot myself and BAM the thing goes nuts and you can hear that horrible sound across the whole store, heads were turning. Guy does a hard shutdown fast.

So he goes in the back, (google searching? ), and comes back. They offer me credit to buy a new one there. I explained I dont have time to ship it back I need a computer for tomorrow to work on.

Im telling them, this suuuucks.... THIS is the computer I want at this price but apple sent me a bad one. I need the 16gig upgrade ability or I would have gotten a 21.5.

So im thinking im screwed... I have to buy a new machine and lose out on my refurb discount I really needed. I start asking about a 16gig 21.5" so the damage isnt as bad, and that removes the upgrade issue for me.

They have none in stock. :( So now im really screwed. Ill have to buy a new 27" aaarrrgghhh If I want a machine for monday.

The guy goes back to talk to his manager again... he's done this 3 times now.
Ive been at the store in a state of depression for an hour now trying to figure out what to do.

He walks out with a new 27" iMac and an even swaps me.

YEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

THANK YOU APPLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I get to sing your praises as a new convert, instead of bad mouthing you for the next year and being pissed off :)

:apple: I luv u !

I'm thinking your great demonstration (with lots of noise) was the kicker here.
I think it helps your case when you can show off in front of the other customers!

Life would be simpler with a motorcycle (or a bicycle) and a Mac Mini, wouldn't it?

It is probably because the manager didn't want permanent hearing damage while the techs were swapping the logic board, or Apple agreed to capture the machine in which they take it for testing.

glad I have my MM

I guess one of the benefits of paying what we do for all things Apple.
Customer service.

Followup..... been a while now working with my new Imac... or not working depending on how you see it.

I gotta say.... im extremely disappointed in apple and the INSANE bugs they have left in Mavericks.

Ive wasted a week pulling my hair out trying to make this computer useful.

Is Apple oblivious to the fact that professionals use lots of network storage???

Issue 1) automount bug. Mounts you setup in unix to mount at boot time can only be mounted as root. Widely reported, and no one has found a solution yet. This is so unacceptable. After booting, I have to sudo to root, umount, and then re-run automount to get it to correctly mount volumes as nosuid so regular users can access the remote drives.

Issue 2) SMB1,SMB2 bugs. Using smb: and cifs: both worthless when copying large files from another machine. Copies fail because the file is being reported as in use. Also widely reported. Going to need to install afp on my linux server to be able to share files. Wow.... a unix implementation that cant even do samba right. Pathetic.

Seems apple targets single users and only devices directly connected to it.

Spending days and days reading hundreds of pages of OSX users desperately trying to find solutions to REALLY BASIC STUFF THAT SHOULD JUST WORK is really sad.

Ill eventually find a way around all this crap, but dear Apple, you have a pathetically BROKEN version of unix in OSX. Please do some ****** Q&A, this isnt remotely acceptable in a modern unix based computer. AAarrrgghhhh.

And before telling me im wrong, do a search.... all this stuff is widely reported but doesnt happen to everyone. Depends on which version of OSX you have. This stuff USED to work on older version of OSX but a lot of it broke in Lion , Mavericks , etc. Apples QA is seriously sucking on the OS level.

I bought my first Mac so I wouldnt waste tons of time like this which always happens when dealing with crap Microsoft products.

Imagine my surprise when I immediately started hitting issues and burning tons of time trying to get my mac to do what FREE Linux does perfectly right out of the box. I cant believe Apple broke this CORE functionality in their latest OS releases. I feel like I bought a crap microsoft product that just looks prettier. /disappoint

UPDATE

Installed an apple file server/afp on my linux machine, and now everything works.

Basically, SMB1 and SMB2 is completely BROKEN on OSX Mavericks. WTF apple? Its 2014!!!

Yes, I ran into a few major bugs with Mavericks. I couldn't get my iMac and Mac Mini connected with ethernet and was pulling my hair out for days until someone posted about the issue and the work-around.

The other issue was when using screen sharing the windows would get jammed in the corner of the iMac and I'd have to reset the screen resolution to get the window back out. OSX 10.9.2 fixed this issue. I haven't checked yet if the ethernet issue was corrected.

I also assumed that Apple shoved Mavericks out the door knowing that only a small percentage of users would be affected by the loose ends.

It was common knowledge that MS would ship beta versions of their software to beat out the competition for release dates.
