OP, you are making this too difficult. Call the police station and find out if there is a detective with that name. Asking all of us our opinions is complicating everything.

Yeah, call the main number not the number he gave you.
Also did you call apple yet to see if it is indeed stolen?

Also the seller could be in on it like someone else said.
Does he live in CO? Or maybe after he sold it, he reported the phone stolen.

Dude, it's probably a scam. Just live your life and relax. If the 'detective' was legit, then i think they would've arrested you already.

Report this to your local police station, and tell them to deal with it.

I bet the scammer is the seller who wants his iPhone back, so that he makes easy $.

The fact that this detective is choosing to do his business via email as opposed to knocking on your front door or calling you personally says enough in itself.

Could contact the Sheriffs department to verify if this man exists, and if he doesn't exist, report the phone number that you were supposed to contact him at and have them deal with it. Impersonating a cop is illegal..

I'd say give Apple all the documentation that you have from the sale. You want to talk to Apple directly about this too. If they have a private detective working for them they will know who he is. I'm sure they have some kind of fraud department or something like that. You will have to give it back now that you know its stolen, (unless someones scamming you) and I would send it back to Apple directly. Sorry to hear about this, that really sucks.

i guessing this is all related to the seller and should not concern you at all as this is a scam-a-jam-jam. Just chill and enjoy the iPhone. Maybe try flipping things on the seller and threaten to inform the authorties of this BS.

worst advice in this thread: go to the police (the police will do NOTHING)

best advice in this thread: drop it. it's a scam. if it were the real deal, they would have reached you by phone, not email

now someone get a mod to lock this nonsense

Update!

To everyone here that has replied to my post regarding if he thought this is a scam or not i have some news

i phoned the sherrifs department
not the number that i was given on the email but the number that i got form the main website of Douglas county

There is aTony Garza which the reception put me through and we had a chat for this matter

He informed me about the case
i didn't have to tell the buyer or the model of the iPhone
he told me the name of the seller which obviously i agreed that it was him
The guy, seller, has stolen more than 200 times like many many iPads and iPhones

The debate we had here regarding the issue of the iPhone not being blacklisted or the service stop working due to be stolen the detective enforced me that maybe flagged it as "normal" his words "maybe apple doesn't care, well hasn't cared the last two years with other cases as well"

i didn't have to say any of my personal information or give anything else

So to people that thought straight away that this is a scam and i shouldn't care about this i would say thank god i searched about this because not everything is a scam
Would like to thank you all for your advice and support
The only thing that i can do now if i want is to call the fraud department in Apple and see of i can get it replaced. The detective told me that probably they will not replace it but i can try

Thats the story :)

its definitely not nonsense and you can judge as much as you want
the only reason i post here this story is for everyone to know from a personal experience
it would be best if you can stop judging till this is over which now is over
of course anyone not believing me can phone the main department and see that the detective actually exists and of course i have nothing to gain by telling a fake story, just in case anyone thought something like that!

If the detective was legit he would have arrested him already? Or maybe he was trying to get more information about the SELLER so he could catch him. How could the OP be arrested for buying a product that he thought at the time of sale was brand new and not stolen?

Good job. It was obvious that this was real. Now you need Apple to tell you what you can be done with this phone. Can you keep it? Sell it? (that doesn't seem likely) or what? Keep this thread updated.

The seller is actually arrested the detective wanted some information for his case
he told me his username, his name plus the legit t shirt business that he was running on ebay apart from hundreds of stolen advices!

Thank you!
not many people believed me tho
I'm speaking with Apple just now....well I'm on hold
the detective told me that the phone is not flagged so i can sell it as used which obviously that would have been the case after one year fuse!!

Yeah. I was just replying to the ridiculous comment made by Reach9

this a sweet story actually!

hahahah
actually took me many hours on the phone..thank god i have free international calls!

btw, spoke with apple
they can't do anything about it so I'm heading too ebay or paypal for a refund or replacement or something to resolve issue if possible
fingers crossed!

Just be careful, if you get an email from a detective from Nigeria investigating a stolen phone from his rich, but dead father, you know the one that has all those millions sitting in a bank...

LOL

(I love happy endings...)
