If these new Macs are an indication of the new pricing scheme for this 'premium' class of Apple devices, you can expect the next iPhone to be 20-40% more expensive. While you think it's bad in the US, look at European prices, it's absurd. I won't even mention what is happening in the UK...

I was just thinking this. Sigh. It's like buying a product, and giving another $1000 just 'because'.

I doubt this considering Macs and iPhones are two different markets and iPhones is their bread and butter for them and is the cheapest ones to get on the spot thanks to monthly installments. The cheapest Macbook is still pricier than the most expensive iPhone.

Didn't Apple lower the price on iPhones this year while also doubling storage ? $649 for a 32gb iPhone 7 and $499 for an SE with same A9 chip as 6s. Of course , this is Apple. Anything is possible. They sure aren't allergic to money .

They are price gouging MacBooks to recover some R&D for that Touch Bar. Then minor updates and lower prices will soon follow. All tech is that way . I can pick up a Samsung 4K TV for under $800 when they probably cost double or triple a few years ago. Tech always gets better and cheaper as time goes by.

Omg they show a picture of a blown up crayon and give you a tiny oled touch pad instead of Fkeys so you have to look down all the time and charge a premium for it. Makes me feel like I shouldn't own an iPhone
I thought that was Apple's dignity exploding, not a crayon

In 2011 I bought my MBP for 1000€, today it's 2000€. Last year's MBP hasn't dropped a cent, they still sell it for 1500€.
Where's that 'they'll get cheaper as years go by'?

The thing is the Pixel XL is the same price as the iPhone 7 Plus. So whats to say everyone else will be charging the same price?

What evidence do you have that in the past, when Apple raised computer prices, they also raised iPhone prices? I'd like to check out that research before commenting further.

Tim cooks priority list

1) money
2) money
3) money
4) money
....
Original. 🙄

That would, in fact, be stockholders' priority list, which is, in fact, the point of owning stock. Of course Tim has stock options, but here's my point: yes, Apple is a company and a company's main goal is to make money. (Shocking, I know.) However, if all Tim Cook does is gouge customers, then he won't have customers to gouge for long.

Apple's products have always charged a premium. The iPhone is an anomaly.

Do a little research before parroting internet trolls. 😎

Next year you'll have 3 iPhones, 2 regular ones and another 'premium' with different design, newer/better features, just like these new Macs with Touch Bar. It's price may start from 900-1000 USD.

You said it.

Making money is a side effect of creating products or services that the world justifies through purchasing. Let me know when Tim does that

Oh nonsense. Apple are jacking up prices to compensate for falling and slowing unit sale rates.

And they're trying to shift as much as possible onto their foreign markets. They would double prices overseas if they had to - to avoid increases in their home USA market

I doubt that it will be sold for much higher than current US prices.
Most likely the same price point or a $20 increase like the 7 plus models this year.
Outside the US with import tariffs and currency exchange rates plummeting its a whole different ballgame.

Your evidence is overwhelming; I don't even know how to respond. 🙄 (But that's never stopped me before.)

The fact is that Apple has historically postured itself as a premium ecosystem with premium hardware that demands a premium price. One can take it or leave it. Folks these days just haven't been around long enough to see this perspective. Most on MRF have only had disposable income recently (or are still buying computers with mom & dad's credit card).
  • The Mac Pro starts at $3,000 with no monitor, accessories, etc.
  • 1997 - Apple sold a 20th Anniversary Mac, known as the "TAM." It sold for $7,500. That's $11,000 in today's money.
  • 1990 - the Mac IIfx was $9,000 or almost $15,000 in today's money.
  • 1989 - the Macintosh Portable was $6,500, which is $11,000+ in today's money.
  • 1985 - Apple released the LaserWriter networked laser printer, which retailed for $7,000. That's $15,000+ in today's money.
  • Heck, in 1983, Apple's Lisa debuted for $10,000. That's $24,000 today.

SMH, kids. 😀

2011 was a much diffferent time, economically, texhnologically and market-wise... its beyond foolish to compare prices across six years of a rapid-moving industry.

You know what those 2011 laptops came with? 4 GB ram, 512 GB HDD, less than HD resolution screens (except "15), 5.5+ lbs of carry weight, nonoptimal cooling fans, inefficient batteries, etc. etc.

Did you blindly follow apple througout the years, or did you actually watch competitors produce laptops? The market price has gone up drastically for ALL top laptops. Yesterday's Microsoft event released a base-level, top laptop for $2199...

Yet at that time it was acceptable. They could've added 512 GB SSD. As you know, components get cheaper over time and Macs get more expensive.

in 2011 I paid £999 for my Macbook Pro and if i want to replace it I have now to pay virtually double.
Twice the technology at half the price every 18 months seems to be ignored by Apple.
I can see that the premium iPhone will cost £1100 next year to buy outright. Thats why Apple have introduced the interest free upgrade programme with affordable monthly payments , so that they can keep hiking prices and maintaining their customer base.

Prices of most smartphones are falling while prices for computers are staying about the same based on current inflation.

The difference being is you can buy a $30-$200 smartphone to do 90% tasks on what a $700+ flagship can do. While with a laptop, you can't find a decent one for that $30-$200 price range and would need to spend over $1000+ for something that can last 4-5 years minimum. I never found any value with Chromebooks since all the apps were web-based. What a waste of money. Just like I never found owning an iPhone feeling special or gaining any status symbol points when idiots like the Kardashians sisters and everybody else owns one.

The mobile industry is the more saturated, competitive, and larger market. They offered the iPhone SE with a competitive price ($400-$500) when Apple could've sold that A9 powered iPhone for $150 more. They dropped the iPhone 7 base model to $100 while doubling storage. Apple can get away with price gouging with personal computers in a less cluttered field dealing with Lenovo, HP, and Dell. While Apple will stay in check with prices on phones since they are dealing with several more competitors including more inexpensive Chinese OEMs.

I dont know, I see some decent windows laptops around the $300-400 price range.
Nothing great that you would use for gaming or such things but for every day use they will be fine without needing to spend $1000+
