Brace yourselves for next year's 'premium' iPhone price increase

I couldn't tell you. But the msrp is definitely $20 more. You can actually check if you like 🙂 maybe there is some promo you got in in.
 
Why should Apple bother to build a real innovative iPhone 8 since the simple facts of removing the jack from the previous 6S, hiding the antennae bands and introducing a new color is well enough to trigger off a worldwide hysterical demand they are unable to meet ?

Maybe its Timmy's plan to make these premium devices more exclusive again. Cannot have the masses affording them, they are premium.

Nope. All about profit. They want to keep selling same or higher volumes making more $$$. Why do you think there are more financing options than ever. Like someone have said, the cost split over 24 installments would make it easier to people to swallow, without realizing how much increasing. And they'll be still selling stuff at the older price points, just not the top of the line models

The fact is that Apple has historically postured itself as a premium ecosystem with premium hardware that demands a premium price. One can take it or leave it. Folks these days just haven't been around long enough to see this perspective. Most on MRF have only had disposable income recently (or are still buying computers with mom & dad's credit card).
  • The Mac Pro starts at $3,000 with no monitor, accessories, etc.
  • 1997 - Apple sold a 20th Anniversary Mac, known as the "TAM." It sold for $7,500. That's $11,000 in today's money.
  • 1990 - the Mac IIfx was $9,000 or almost $15,000 in today's money.
  • 1989 - the Macintosh Portable was $6,500, which is $11,000+ in today's money.
  • 1985 - Apple released the LaserWriter networked laser printer, which retailed for $7,000. That's $15,000+ in today's money.
  • Heck, in 1983, Apple's Lisa debuted for $10,000. That's $24,000 today.

Yeah. A tape cassette player costs hundreds of dollars in the late seventies and now can be bought for 10 bucks. Too much theory , not enough common sense on your side.

What Savor said. It's a saturated market that's incredibly price sensitive. It's actually amazing that they've been able to unroll the new features that they have with the iPhone. Laptops are a completely different commodity.

The difference being is you can buy a $30-$200 smartphone to do 90% tasks on what a $700+ flagship can do. While with a laptop, you can't find a decent one for that $30-$200 price range and would need to spend over $1000+ for something that can last 4-5 years minimum. I never found any value with Chromebooks since all the apps were web-based. What a waste of money. Just like I never found owning an iPhone feeling special or gaining any status symbol points when idiots like the Kardashians sisters and everybody else owns one.

The mobile industry is the more saturated, competitive, and larger market. They offered the iPhone SE with a competitive price ($400-$500) when Apple could've sold that A9 powered iPhone for $150 more. They dropped the iPhone 7 base model to $100 while doubling storage. Apple can get away with price gouging with personal computers in a less cluttered field dealing with Lenovo, HP, and Dell. While Apple will stay in check with prices on phones since they are dealing with several more competitors including more inexpensive Chinese OEMs.

Sources say that Apple plans to reverse the naming scheme, starting the “S” versions first. Related rumors the sources are hearing: Apple plans to name next year’s model the iPhone 8$.

And that's not even counting the fact that it retains a lot of it's value. When you buy a Macbook for say 1400$ you know that if you buy a new one after 3-4 years you can still sell your old one for 600-700$.

You probably had a promo or traded in a phone and got some credit. The price is definitely more on the 7+.

I agree. The gap between the cost required to make that quality hardware and the price is probably where we see defiiferently if we do

This is a nonsense response.
you may disagree but in my experience the objective of 'make more money' sees people and businesses stagnate and decline. Far more is gained when they try to achieve something that seems impossible at the time, and provides tangible benefit to others. Money will soon follow

Do jet black phones provide tangible benefits?
a streetlight could run apple successfully from when Tim Cook took over

This is actually an extremely fair point. You do pay a higher upfront cost (commonly referred to as "apple premium" or "apple tax") but Apple products generally last longer so the yearly cost over time becomes much less than upgrading to an inferior product on a yearly basis.

That said, with Apple increasing their prices (MacBook Pro line, and $20 more on the iPhone 7 plus), they're pricing themselves out of my comfort/affordable range.
