Do people still plug in to charge these days? How 2018 of them. Just remove the damned port all together and MagSafe.
Gonna blow your mind this but a load of people need at least some port or another to connect their Apple hardware to external gear. It's not just a charging port. Obviously your device is just a toy to you, but to other users it's not.

Sounds like everyone caught wind of an upcoming change and decided to say it was their idea..
I 100% think it's this. Apple was moving away from lightning anyway and people are trying to attach themselves to the issue now to take credit later.

USB-C is a physical connector format and doesn’t dictate what signalling technologies, etc, run over it. That’s why you see, for example, Thunderbolt cables using the same plug as USB cables.

So there’s plenty of room for upgrades in the future while maintaining compatibility with the physical plug!
I'm sure it'll last a long time. But now it'll have to.

But in the end there's only so much physical space for upgrades while maintaining backwards compatibility. Remember USB-micro 3.0?

i hope so literally everything i own is usb c including my ipad pro, macbook. im getting tired trying to find lightning cables when literally everything is usbc

Go Brazil. Sometimes, just sometimes, we need the governments of the world to legally enforce common sense when stubborn mfrs like Apple refuse to do it voluntarily.
Great for Apple. They can now say. "It is not our fault all your lightning accessories are useless...."
Or they can just go completely portless.

I don’t know how to feel about the mandates, but I absolutely would love a USB C iPhone. Traveling now and it feels rediculous needing to bring 3 different cables to charge my ipad pro, apple watch, and iphone despite them all being from the same company.

Yes. It is way too slow to charge like on vacation when you quickly need to give your phone a battery boost or when you need to charge it at Airports, on trains or in your backpack with an powerbank on the go. So many use cases

If USB-C is not sufficient to implement some kind of new tech then what? All companies have to agree to another common standard first before that tech can be brought to market?
That's fine if it reduced waste, no? Surely, there is a tradeoff if one is to care for the waste and environment?

In fairness the writing was on the wall ever since Apple started introducing usb c seven years ago in the first couple of products.

This is clear government overreach.
That’s a clear opinion piece. But sure leave big tech alone to figure these things out, what could possibly go wrong.

In reality rules laws and standards should be set by elected representatives rather than mega corporations with only profit and shareholder value in mind. This is in no way different than having the same power outlet format across a country.

After the EU adopted USB-C I thought maybe Apple might release an EU-only model with this port while keeping the Lightning port for the rest of the world. But now it looks like they might have to make a complete switch to USB-C after all.
Probably just include an adapter, just as they did the last time the EU tried to mandate a port.

Yes, which slows down the rate of advancement. Put it this way. Let's say Amazon develops some new tech that creates super fast transfers, superfast charging or any other magical item that is on your wish list. Unless everyone gets on the same page, this advancement never reaches comsumers.

Forcing companies to standarize is stifling competition. In the long run, it's going to do the opposite of what is intended, IMO. How long will it take Regulators in the EU to approve a new standard? Historically, by they time they do, there will be better options available.

We could end up with better iPhones?
After 15 years on the market it’s relatively safe to assume the product is mature. Most countries also don’t. Hangs their wall plugs and power chords and the world doesn’t stop spinning. Much more annoying than lightning cables, at least for me personally, are the old mini and micro usb cables that often times are still used and that will then finally be removed from the market. A few years too late for my liking but change always takes some effort.
