Apple: I think I can make these thinner and lighter
Everyone else: [Groan] function over form please
It’s also about weight. I wouldn’t mind a thicker phone, but I would mind a noticeably heavier phone. People have complained about how iPhones in recent years have become heavy bricks. Of course one reason is the glass backs to enable wireless charging. Personally I would prefer they would ditch those.

And once again, they prioritize thinness over utility. They really don't learn from past mistakes, do they?
Sigh. It's the *Mini*. Right there in the name. I think people who are turned on by the idea of the smallest possible iPhone don't also think "please make it thick and heavy because my tiny phone must have a 2 week battery".

The "thinness over function" thing pretty much died with Steve Jobs, he was always one for the "look how THIN it is" money shot part of the keynotes. Since then, iPhones have been getting thicker and heavier for each generation, what with all the glass backs and new internals they've been piling on. The 12 Max is a half-pound behemoth just like the 11 Max, both weighing in at 54 grams more than the first phablet iPhone (6 Plus).

At 133 grams, the Mini is still part of the perpetual weight gain trend we've seen in iPhones over the last few years. It's heavier than the 6 (129 g). People who want a "Mini" probably have fond memories of the 5/5s/SE 1st Gen form factor. The SE1 weighed 113 grams. So they made the right call keeping the Mini well below 150.

The 11 pro was the first iPhone that had pretty solid battery life. Its a shame they continue to go thin over battery life, especially with 5G. Maybe next year they will bump it back to 11 pro levels of battery instead of skimping just to make it thinner.

Apple made the phones thinner for a start.
Apple could of made a slightly thicker mini though.

Even though it has a bigger battery than the 6S, listed audio playback specs for the 12 mini and 6S are 50 hours.
So it seems the mini's battery is calculated to last as long as the 6S did when it first came out.

Well, not everyone, some of us have different use cases. My work desk has a Xi charging pad next to me where I can dump it at any time because it's a convenient place to put it anyway when I work, battery is no issue.

Every iPhone since the 6S got thicker generation by generation and my XS is a brick, - I applaud the smaller thinner lighter iPhone Mini. If my XS wasn't so d@mn good and didn't still have 100% battery health I'd get the Mini.

I'm actually not surprised. Even although these have 5G modems, the X55 is a more efficient modem on a better (7nm) process than the Intel 7660, so it probably balances out the energy consumption of 5G. The rest of the gains will be from moving the A14 to an efficient 5nm EUV process.

If Apple can integrate their upcoming modem into the A14 SoC and have performance comparable to the X55/X60 I will be massively impressed, and the competition will really struggle to compete.

You'd think Apple saving money on not including a charger or earphones would bump up the battery life to be better than the last release. You'd be wrong. In fact, its worse than the iPhone 11.
It’s a strategy to nudge people to charge more often, and people will look “oh, guess I’ll get that MagSafe charger since it’s more convenient.”

ka-ching...

The magsafe magnet really opens up a possibility of a great battery pack accessories. I’m not worried about the smaller battery capacity in the 12 series.

Imagine if you have a battery accessory like this. A super thin magnetic battery pack that you can easily stick on the magsafe to charge the phone, and a dock to charge those battery packs. You can charge 3-4 battery packs at the same time and grab them when you need more battery. Just stick it on the back of the iphone easily. I’m sure some companies like mophies and anker will come up with something like that.

I'm waiting for real world results from the folks here before I even think about getting the 12. I also have a (launch day) XSMax with 100% battery health and still on iOS 13.7. Have you upgraded to 14.0 yet? And, yes, my XSMax is d@mn good too!

That tile actually went to the XR, the first iPhone with major gains in battery life.

But people want 5G, I guess. Literally all the tech people keep harping on Apple and demand iPhones with 5G. Well, Apple said here it is, with smaller battery, you asked for it.

I wished Apple made a 4G version for some markets that won’t get 5G for at least another 2 or 3 years (or longer). Imagine a cheaper iPhone 12 with larger battery, and the A14 will have more room to flex its muscles. But the 5G boat has sailed.

think of it: 11 Pro Max with the new Qualcomm modem(non-5G) and A14. A true 2 day smartphone.... <<sigh>>

Imagine Apple started using the same capacity as some Android phones with how much more efficient iphones and ios run? Week long battery life anyone? :D
Yeah, but the weight is probably going to be quite heavy.
Samsung is releasing a Galaxy M51, which is basically an A71 with 7000mAh battery. It is still lighter than the 12 Pro Max, but that’s because of the plastic body. Glass and steel do add up, so Apple has to balance things out. This is why I actually think it’s good that plastic is returning as it allows the Android OEMs to make these large phones with large batteries without making them too heavy.

Lol. Yeah, I'm on iOS 14. It works fine for me and I enjoy the widgets. What I didn't expect to like was the photo widget, I thought it would be a useless gimmick but I'm getting random Favourite pictures every day of my family and I really enjoy that.

Thanks for the reply. Got burned last year with 13.0 when first released. Wanted that "dark mode". I'll still wait for a while before I upgrade to 14.0

Right now I’m using a XS Max so I expect a 12 Pro Max will have at least as good or better battery life. MAH numbers are meaningless

The battery will be a little bit smaller to accommodate the added antenna.
I am interested in the teardown but I think the antennas are part of the frame and what’s causing the problem it’s the addition of the magnet assembly which Apple was trying to balance out with the weight of the phone.
