Since then, iPhones have been getting thicker and heavier for each generation, what with all the glass backs and new internals they've been piling on. The 12 Max is a half-pound behemoth just like the 11 Max, both weighing in at 54 grams more than the first phablet iPhone (6 Plus).
No, not really. They've been getting thicker and heavier since iPhone 6 Plus was bending in people's pockets, because I'm not sure if you remember, but after Jobs died they made iPhone 5/5s which were thinner than 4s AND THEN 6 and 6 Plus which were even thinner, if not the thinnest ever.

After the bendgate they pretty much stopped bragging about that and changed internal construction of iPhone 6s. But that wasn't enough - it still had pretty small battery, so with 7 and 7 Plus they made it (if I remember correctly) last 1 hour longer. Next huge increase in battery life came with 11 and 11 Pros, but they are also the thickest iPhones since iPhone 4.
Let's compare the depth of the newest devices:

So yeah, I stand with what I said earlier. iPhone 12 Mini / 12 / 12 Pro / 12 Max (they all have the same depth) are thinner than iPhone 5S. Batteries on 12/Pro/Pro Max are smaller than on their predecessors. *sigh*

Ha Throttle gate...yup I got a new battery out of that for only $29.00 I can't complain lol
I've actually had about 3 batteries replaced since I bought my 6s in 2015. The throttle gate battery is what's in my phone now but it's slowly degrading. After 5 yrs I'm due for an update. There's one thing I can say for sure and that's how impressive I've been with my 6s. I've grown to love the size and touch ID but I'm out of storage.

How do you like Face ID instead of Touch ID? Did it take you awhile to get use to it? How does it work with masks that were still wearing? When it doesn't work to open with a mask how do you get it to turn on? I've never used Face ID so that's why I ask.

I cut a piece of cardboard of the exact dimensions of the 12 pro and I actually put it in my front pocket to see how it would feel. It's really only about 3/4" taller than my 6s and just a tad but wider so I feel like I can work with that but it's like you mentioned, the weight is what I'm concerned about on the 12 pro with 46 grams heavier than my 6s. That might not sound like a lot but in your pocket I think I'm gonna feel the weight.

I hate having to wait a couple more weeks in order to hold them at retail store but sounds like what I might have to do. Unless I see some u tube reviews that might sway me on the mini or the 12 pro.

Which one are you leaning toward more?

It's really the storage that pushes one towards upgrading, yeah?

Losing Touch ID was probably the first thing I had to adjust to. It was quick enough on my 5S, but it got even faster with my 6S, and I didn't want to let go of that convenience. Now, I didn't initially find Face ID to be slow, but I didn't really like having to look at my screen to complete the unlock. I eventually got used to it. Liked it, even. It's convenient when you get a notification: you can glance at your screen to unlock a preview, and then your phone locks again when you look away.

Face ID doesn't play well with masks, though. If you're wearing one, iPhone pulls up the passcode screen. It used to take longer in previous versions of iOS, but Apple sped that process up in a later update. So if your phone can't immediately recognize your face, it brings up the passcode input screen quickly so that you can unlock that way. And that's what makes me miss Touch ID.

Then there's one other thing about moving to a phone the size of the iPhone 12 Pro. When I moved from the 6S to the XS, I immediately noticed the heft. The fatigue is most noticeable when you're using the phone while lying down. Didn't feel that with my 5S or 6S, but I did with my XS.

Another thing to get used to is OLED. I was actually fine for a few days after getting the XS, and then I started feeling eye strain. [Apparently, OLED eye strain is a thing.] My eyes aren't particularly sensitive, and I'm not one to get migraines, but the eye strain was considerably uncomfortable for some days. But I eventually got used to it. The eye strain went away.

I'm still not sure which one I want, haha! I busted out my old iPhone 6S to get a feel for it again. The smaller screen doesn't bother me at all, and it was great to be able to use my phone while lying down with out being fatigued by the weight.

Ultimately, I think, my main considerations for the iPhone 12 Mini are battery life and storage capacity. I need to assess if I'll be happy with those. As for the iPhone 12 Pro, I need to think if I'm OK with a phone that heavy for another two years, at the very least.

Really can't wait for the reviews and demo units!

I forgot about the screen type my 6s is LCD so I’d be going to a OLED for the first time. I remember seeing posts on this forum about eye strain. Thanks for the link, thats a great article on this subject. I think we forgot sometimes that if we’re looking at electronics for 20 mins you really need to look away into the distance at least 20 seconds to allow your eyes to relax and re focus, this is proven to help in eye strain.

The more I talk this out the more the 12 pro is not going to be the best option for me, the gram weight is just too heavy. If I decide to go 6.1” I’d consider the 12 which is only 164 grams. That about 21 grams more than my 6s.

At this point I’m leaning more towards the mini. Like you I plan to keep my 6s not that I will use it but it will help me gauge it against what I want to replace it with. I can’t see trading it and letting it go for only $50-60 credit. It’s worth much more than that to me. 🤣

You're welcome for the link!

Yeah, especially now that people are working from home, alleviating eye strain has become even more important. I hope that, when you upgrade, the eye strain doesn't become too uncomfortable for you!

I'm still on the fence about what to get, haha! It's a double-edged sword that I have my experience with the XS for reference, because I know that the heft can be annoying but also tolerable.

Yes, I'm totally with you on keeping the 6S. I didn't sell mine for that reason too, apart from the need for a spare phone. It'd break my heart to sell or trade it at so low a price.

Whichever you decide to purchase, I hope the phone suits your needs and serves you well for many years to come! For now, I shall twiddle my thumbs and wait for the reviews and demo units, haha!

It was fun talking to you. Good luck on your purchase. I’m now thinking about getting the 12 model. It’s only 100.00 difference between the mini and the 12.

Check this out, I wondered how long it would take for new rumors 😂 should I hold on to my 6s till iPhone 13 just for Touch ID? Lol

My iPhone 11 Pro Max battery is the best part of the phone. I’ll wait for the reviews before deciding to upgrade. If the battery life is shorter then it’s an instant skip this year.

Well, not everyone, some of us have different use cases. My work desk has a Xi charging pad next to me where I can dump it at any time because it's a convenient place to put it anyway when I work, battery is no issue.

Every iPhone since the 6S got thicker generation by generation and my XS is a brick, - I applaud the smaller thinner lighter iPhone Mini. If my XS wasn't so d@mn good and didn't still have 100% battery health I'd get the Mini.
That is surprising to read considering I got my XS in January 2019 and it’s at 88% health with what seems to be dreadful battery life.

I got it at launch but It's probably down to use patterns. I never let the battery drop below 30% and I have an app that makes a sound when the battery is charged to 90% so I'm very gentle on the battery, keeping it in that ideal zone of the charge curve.

It also helps that during the day I do most stuff on the computer,- why use a phone when I have a big monitor in front of me all day and have things like WhatsApp Web, Desktop Firefox, etc...

Yes, thank you for the discussion! I appreciated it!

Haha, and this creates a third option for me: wait. I clung to my iPhone 6S for three years. If I could wait three years then, I could do that again now.

If I buy now, and Touch ID returns to the iPhone next year, I'll kick myself! 🤣

Good luck on your purchase too!

While we're on the topic, is MagSafe charging worse for the battery than lightning, or the same?

I'd like to know too.

In the case of Qi charging, I noticed that my iPhone XS heats up a lot faster than if I charge with a wire. And we all know that heat makes batteries degrade faster. :/

I remember when iPhone 5 came out and Apple COMPLETELY underestimated the battery consumption of the new LTE connection. IMO iPhone 5 had the worst battery life of all iPhones. I barely used my iPhone 5 and was always reaching 20% around 5-6pm.

Hope they don't make the same mistake here.
I’d give that award to my iPhone 6S that’s been through 4 batteries and a phone replacement (under warranty) due to making it to about 7pm each day after a 100% charge. And I’m switching to an iPhone 12 normal or big even though I’m not a fan of the large size just because I don’t want a repeat of me putting two battery packs in my bag just to keep the phone going throughout the day.

Exactly, I’d do the same. I have a feeling they will bring back Touch ID (with the pandemic which I’m sure will resurface in some other form or another for another yr) Apple probably didn’t have time to implement it this year. I’m not sure I want to go back to entering in my passcode again.
