planes, cars(wake up call GM and Ford at least improved their quality and other manufactures build cars in the US), and military equipment.

i think they might just be assembled here? the actual parts are made somewhere else?

aside from maybe the corvette.

This actually makes sense. Apple will create many jobs, become more environmentally friendly, and, if they wanted to use their cash reserves, could sell these for cheap to re-stimulate the economy. I can see it now: "Apple Saves US From Recession". Awesome.

Are there actually any products (apart from american cars, and they are not exactly a good advert for quality) made from scratch in the USA?

Boeing aircraft, Coca-Cola syrup (but the finished product is bottled locally), and the Macintosh Operating System.

Hope we still have access to HDD and mem!

This sounds interesting, and I'm open to it, but I hope they are not just creating a giant iPod with an encased HDD, memory (and even battery!). I'd like them to make those parts MORE accessible, not less. "Giant block of aluminum" doesn't sound very accessible!

(maybe it's just a giant iPod touch -- no keyboard, just a big touch screen and an on button in a block of aluminum :)

lighter than the air

This new process will allow them to use aluminum foil for manufacturing. It will be the first computer that you can crinkle up in your pocket. Can't wait for my aluminuminum macbook... Awesoommme.

thing is , it doesn't really matter where the product is made at the end of the day , if Apple if taking back full control ....that is a good thing , quality should go really high ...brilliant news this

Sorry for the slight tongue in cheek comment, shoulda realised it was gonna wind some of you american peeps up a bit. ;)

You see my point though, SE Asia is just more geared up for electronic manufacturing and assembly than the USA or any other western country come to think of it. So much more cost effective with the right core skills already in place.

True, some parts are sourced else where, from what I have seen most GM and Ford products have at least 70% US/Canada parts content( the Aveo and Astra being notable exceptions).

How exciting. I have to ponder this.

Now, as an owner of an Air, and seeing how it's constructed by cutting a hole in the bottom to get the guts in there - how really is the Air much different than what's described? Air is a slab of metal really.

What a great company.

Grado Headphones afaik.

Yah, all their headphones, cartridges and amps are built from scratch in the US&A and the assembly process is done by hand. With the exception of the iGrado that has its assembly process in China, although the drivers and all are made in the USA and are shipped to be assembled.

Not for me. But then I'm in Europe and mostly think of American cars of lesser quality from days gone by when I see "Made in the USA".

L:)L- how many American cars "of lesser quality" have you been driving London. Do you have a petrol pump in your garden, or have you been listening to Jeremy Clarkson (Top Gear)?

just thought of something....

will this change of manufacturers be a detriment to the rumor world? If Apple completely controls the production and manufacture of products, won't it be much easier for Apple to keep all new products a secret?

In the context of lasers, what are "sharks"?

Great news

Carving out of one piece = less aluminum. If you bend it, then the aluminum needs the be thicker everywhere else (far thicker than it needs to be) so that it isn't dangerously thin at the bend point. Even then, the bend will still be relatively weak. Carved out of one piece, The curves are as solid as everywhere else, so you can use less aluminum in the places where there is not much danger for stress and damage, while not worrying that the curves will still be too weak. The shavings can easily be recycled (likely in the same factory), so nothing is lost.
