9to5mac says that "There are no seams in the final product, so it is smooth."

I wonder what this really means? The case must still consists of several pieces, right? They have to put in a motherboard there, support removable HDD and battery, etc. I am just curious what the differences will really be.

I guess it means the edges between the keyboard plate and the bottom. There still has to be a hinge and separate screen. Maybe the back end (where the hinge is) comes off and reveals the motherboard and all.

Well considering the Ancient Chinese built everything without the use of nails or glue, this would be "Made from China"

Chinese dont design/develop the products.... they just put them together (just like robots) under direct order from the HQ's elsewhere. So IMHO this plant if true can be based anywhere in the world.... and well might be using robotic assembly platforms.... so doesnt matters if the locality for the factory had an ancient history or not.

The prices will be lower and the quality will be lower. Happens with every "next" generation of apple product, practically. The current gen. of notebooks have no remote, the current iPhone has a plastic back and ships dockless, etc.
$999 MacBook
$1599 MacBook Pro

Very thin boxes, lol.

Yea, I hate how we lose all of the 'premium' feeling.

Hey so will the new upcoming Macbooks and Pros use this new process? Or is this gonna be more in the future??

Most cars sold in the USA have their final assembly in the USA. Honda builds 60% of their USA cars in Ohio, BMW has a plant in North Carolina, and I believe VW does as well. I think Toyota has a plant in Michigan.

Actually the BMW plant is in South Carolina ;-)

From the article:

"The newly designed MacBooks are still on target for an October 14th announcement and the press should be getting invites within the next few days."

Better heat dissipation and more space for components while being slim. No more cracking issues!

Have there been any assembly-level build quality problems?

The build quality problems in the past were from component suppliers.

I can't imagine the leaving Foxconn, since they have assembled Apple's cases for over 22 years. The relationship has grown over the years. Now they build complete Apple systems on-demand.

Could this be related to the other thread saying that the Taiwanese claim there is nothing being released this month -- because they aren't the ones making it

Running out? The majority of the earth is water, glaciers are melting, and then there is a little something called rain. If anything we have too much water and we will have to live on barges some day.

Uhmmm... There's a difference between drinkable water and salt water. Do you think they'll use saltwater?

Btw dude, rain comes from water evaporating, it doesn't just appear magically.

That too!

I think recycled water makes sense. what the earth is running out of is drinkable water, due to our pollution. Some cities now give away gray water (processed waste-water or rain run-off that cannot be made drinkable), this is used instead of using regular drinking/tap water for irrigation, car washing, etc).

Exactly. I hope they use water that's already jacked.

ANYWAYS, the main part of my post is:

The one thing I've learned from reading this whole thread is that we STILL don't know much about what we'll (hopefully) see the 14th, and so we can't really judge whether we hate or love it yet.

Really can't see them manufacturing in the USA. It wouldn't make any sense, they would save money with the new process and then spend more on manufacture.

The chinese are much better at making stuff than americans anyway. Are there actually any products (apart from american cars, and they are not exactly a good advert for quality) made from scratch in the USA?

Madonna!!! Made in the U.S., but like the giving trooper she is, she shares herself with the ENTIRE world! *wipes a tear*

This new process will allow them to use aluminum foil for manufacturing. It will be the first computer that you can crinkle up in your pocket. Can't wait for my aluminuminum macbook... Awesoommme.

And you can wrap your chewed up gum in it, too, for later use. :D :apple:

Steve Jobs, when will ever stop being innovative??!!

MADE IN USA = HIGHER PRICES?

The question is will the new manufacturing process cut down on cost and retain current mac pricing or will it incur more cost on us consumers. Bear in mind unless the whole process is full automated and doesn't require much labour, then logic dictates there's no way America labour is cheaper than China's and thus a retention of current mac pricing seems almost impossible.

For me I would NOT Care! I long for the good ole Made in USA!

Take it however you like but as an American IM sick of of the cheap crap out there and clothes that one size fits all! I long for this day and the day I can actually buy a pair of socks that fit me like in the good ole days here and not like today where the heels half way up my legs--))) That's just one small example!

Bring it on Apple and bring some jobs back home too! :):):D;):apple::apple::apple:

/me is thinking this is where the lower prices on future MacBooks will be coming from and the reason why Apple won't be making as much profit.

Think about it, if Apple is saving money and already announced they might be having less earnings... could this be the cheapest Mac laptop ever?

I don't get the remote part, but the iPhone has a plastic back for a reason, it improved reception and looks better to a lot of people. It also made it lighter and more unified. Missing a dock doesn't make it lower quality, that happens with like every Apple product, early adopters get something special.

Sharks with freaking laser beams on their heads! :p

Somehow, I do not see Apple carving out a case from a solid lump of aluminium, far too expensive and wasteful.

How's that? Why can't they just melt down the aluminum stock that's left and do it again and again? ;)

You know...I almost wrote this post off. But I tried buying socks the other day, and it was really frustrating how one size is supposed to fit nearly every adult.

SO... I kind of get what you mean.

I can see Apple's adverts now.

"The world's first seamless, toughest, and most beautiful notebook... EVER"

It will all be about it's beauty and elegance. It wont have as much substance as it should.

Assembled in USA? That would be excellent! It's about time to retake back all the outsourced manufacturing jobs! The United States should be leading the way in hi-tech manufacturing! We need to takeover the "green economy" before it even gets started designing and manufacturing the next 100 years of renewable energy technology!

Show me the freakin' patents that Apple has on this new and amazing process. Until these are produced, then I'd have trouble believing it.

I dropped pc and I have not looked back...

Soooooooo awesome. Jobs is a freakin' genius. I love this company.

I'm pretty sure none of the articles have said made in the USA, it just says that apple is running the the manufacturing rather than a 3rd party. Apple could have their factory anywhere in the world, and it would make sense to me to make one in China where there are plenty of cheep materials and labour. They will always do the software and design etc in the USA, but manufacturing anything outside of China is way more expensive, and they would have to pass that onto us. With the economy the way it is, and their prices already being considered high, that would not work out well for them.

Just the way it is.

I'm just stoked to hear something new about the macbooks, I'm still apprehensive but it's more hope that the 14th is going to happen, and that apple arn't going to dissapoint. I know it's optimistic, but I hell, why not be optimistic. Like 9to5 said, they have a pretty good record of rumors being correct about major releases.
