i broke mine today while replacing the glass. My heart sank, i went to apple store and acted dumb, till they wanted to pull it a part to see if the cable was disconnected...by then they would of known i tried to replace the glass myself and ended up buying a refurb for 200.00

I'll try and write up some of the instructions as well when I get home from work. Definitely try this auction though if you want instructions : http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=160372710576&ssPageName=ADME:B:EF:US:1123

Hello, I am yet another person who managed to break the #3 connector :). I ordered replacement part from digi-key (thank to that thread for pointing out). Divideby, would it be possible for you to scan the instructions you get from eBay and share them with us (or PM me if you do not want to publish them in the thread). Thank you in advance.

Anyone in Toronto, Ontario, Canada who has this part and can make the repair?

What are they called and where would I find one of them - It has the no. 97 written on it. I have atteched an image. ALso would it be worth trying to fix this. Phone doesnt show any sign of life but when I attache it to my usb port windows say usb port malfuction so it means somthing is happening. Thanks in advanced

That seems like a big problem. not sure if that "diode" is even replaceable, but if you can find the same exact one, you can surely resolder it on. or have someone do it. how did you lose such a piece?

no idea got it of a friend. hopefully i can find same diode and see if it fixes the phone :)

I got a little water on my phone and when I attempted to open it up to let it dry out, I damaged the connector on the PCB for the ribbon cable marked "3" (J2). The connector on the board needs to be replaced. Does anyone have a part number for this or could someone point me in the right direction for getting a replacement? What is this cable for anyway? Thanks in advance!

i had my iPhone repaired by http://www.FixYaiPhone.com
they ware pretty good..

Well add me to the list too! Replaced my battery recently and accidentally broke off the little clip. Located it but tried for about 30 minutes to get it back on the connector on the board and you guys know how much of a nightmare that is!:eek:

The actual connector on the board is still there though, and so far I've just tried to get away with pushing the FPC into the connector and wedging it. The earpiece and light sensor look to be broken.

I guess my question is, does the hook actually serve any purpose other than to just secure the connector? i.e does it actually make the contacts? I'm guessing the FPC is faulty as I was a bit heavy handed with it (likewise the camera, which I've ordered a replacement for). So I'll get myself a new FPC too and am hoping that using my 'wedge' method I'll get away with having the earpiece work again. Am I likely to be successful?:confused:

Cheers! Neil

i just did the same thing, that thing is so brittle! would soldering the no. 3 connector to the remains of where the plastic clamp used to be do the job?

I have the same issue where I can't hear out of the speaker after replacing a battery, does anyone know if I just didn't insert the ribbon in all the way? the bottom part that it connects to is not broken. Thanks in advance.

*Update well that's that, I was trying to press on the back of the cable and it was enough to rip the cheap plastic and knock the clamp out, looks like I'll need a new board unless someone wants to teach me how to solder on that new ribbon connecter.

Hi,

Just thought I'd let you all know I've just ordered 10 of the connectors thru work (digikey is one of our suppliers) so if any of you are in the UK (I'm in Birmingham) and need your iPhone connector replaced drop me a line and I'll see what I can do (not too sure how long the delivery will take at present as I know they have to come from the US)

Regards

Dave

Side-buttons / cable #3 / I'tunes won't recongnise + WSOD

Great Post, I feel like contributing my painful experience at changing my back cover, without the proper tools (specially a MAGNETIC screwdriver and the so useful magnifier-on-stand)

First, I ripped the thing apart breaking the white little clamp on my way. Changed the back cover. Managed to put everything back together and started the phone..... No response, the freaking thing was dead. I freaked out ... opened it up again, my hands almost shaking, reassembled it.... nothing. So, I repeated the same process again, plugged it into the computer and Voila! (Don’t know why) The empty battery icon goes on.... the boot logo....and the….White Screen Of Death. From there, tried everything. I was unable to Restore or DFU Mode etc...So I kept the routine of letting the phone battery died and bring it back to life by connecting it to my computer...wait for the boot logo and pray. Until at some point I started pressing on the Home button when the boot logo appeared. Well, It worked! I kept pressing until the lock screen showed up.

Sigh! With the Phone working, I was now able to realized that the side-buttons/ Mute / earphones jack / power buttons weren’t working, as well as, the Light sensor / earphone (on the phone). Plus, It wouldn’t be discovered by any manner by my computer.

My research led me to think that the ribbon connecting the side / mute / ear-plug/power buttons was somehow busted. So, I successfully ordered and changed the ribbon, and they all work now, except for the earphones mic and control (Which, I suspect is the result of either the quality of the parts or my handling). I’m now at the point of changing ribbon # 3 for the Light sensor / earphone, (it seems like the thing should work even without the white clamp.) I’ll keep you posted on this.

OOhh and if I had not jailbreak the phone before this happened, I wouldn’t have be able to lock or power off the phone or communicate with the phone at all. (Thanks SSH )

Now, if anyone knows something about the charging/synch craziness other than the dfu mode thing, I’ll appreciate to know.

Thanks

hey folks,

FORGET ABOUT REPAIRING THIS! it is just toooo tiny. no earthian non-dwarf cannot solder this together. its just impossible. dont buy any replacement. throw the iphone away, buy a new one and learn from this.

IMPOSSIBLE i say...

#3 ribbon cable

There is a guy in California that I found his website and called him. I cant remember the name off hand but it said something about penny diagnosis. anyway I talked to him about it. he said you need to find a shop in your town that does "micro soldering" and they can fix it for you. he said it was expensive around $100 but it is better than throwing it away.

Fixed it without new connector

Broke mine yesterday while replacing the camera. Spend all evening to fix it and finally succeeded. I gently pushed the cable under the pins of the connector and checked if they made contact using an hour glass. Next used sticky tape to keep everything in place. After 5 attempts the speaker works again.

Only the camera is not what I hoped for: fixed macro focus. I'm not going to try to fix this as well. I'll keep my phone closed from now on till there is a new model on the market and I can get a new abo.
