As for the video - I'm okay with that but it's not a concern. Doing music I want something nice and cheap with as much oommmph as possible.

Doing music I want something inspiring and quiet. The iMac is just that.
Using laptop hardware makes it much easier to build a slick and quiet computer.
Even if they made the case big enough to fit desktop hardware in there, it would need better cooling and unless they come up with a really good cooling system it will be noisier.

Seriously, on my C2D MacBook i've made songs with lots of effects, samplers and synths. I am actually amazed how much I can throw at it without a slightest hick-up. I'm sure that if you make electronic music with lots of CPU intensive synths you will need more speed. But for most people the iMac should get them far and beyond.

It would take another inch at least to use desktop parts. Then again, they could rectify the situation with an actual desktop.

Than would make too much "common sense".

They want to touch the middle of the road public? then they need to use "common sense".

The more I think about this the more pissed off I get. It really irks me that Apple does this. Just come out and tell us when the new ones will be introduced. You don't have to show me what it looks like just when it's coming and I will make a choice on that. As it is it looks like I am sticking with a windows box for my family and I am a VERY brand loyal kind of guy.

Not that I'm not also greatly annoyed, but there's a very good reason why Apple doesn't say ahead of time when new machines are going to be released. If they come out as say 'new, redesigned iMacs will be coming out in September,' it would kill sales of iMacs between now and then. I'm sure those sales are already dropping off, but people knowing when the new ones are coming out would make it much, much worse.

So from a business standpoint, it makes absolute sense to keep us in the dark.

Most computer users, especially in Apple's price range, are smart enough to realize when new tech is introduced that they will be updating in the near future. Unfortunately they're usually the last ones though.

They could still sell off current inventory at reduced prices like car makers do. Also it's not a surprise to most that a change is coming.

Just hoping Apple reads this board and thinks about what they are doing.

Everyone is acting like Apple is doing them a personal disservice by offering to sell you their current inventory and not telling you when they will have a better product to offer. If new iMacs had come out this week no one would be complaining. What you are really mad about is that you didn't get what you were hoping for and the rumors that were going around did not pan out.

How many people actually have to buy a new computer right now anyway? I can understand if it is for your business and you are currently losing money, but if you want new technology just wait until they release it.

All I really want is a 24" iMac with a good to decent video card. One thing that Mac is not up to speed on is video cards. In building my own box or for that matter going to Dell I can pick my own components.

This forum just like others is here to let everyone speak their opinion and sometimes just sometimes it might just be something you disagree with.

I can respect you opinion and your right to disagree, but the 24" iMac has an option for a 7600GT 256MB VRAM card. That qualifies as at least good or decent. It might not be the latest and greatest, but it falls into those parameters. Now if you want 88xx or something, then I see your complaint, but then we're not talking about just good to decent.

For me, I don't want an iMac that is almost a year old. I buy a new computer every 5 years or so, so I'd rather not start a year behind from Day One.

That's why I'm more than a little annoyed right now.

I agree. Then again, I'm also annoyed that I have to buy an all in one in the first place and that I have to get the 24" screen to get any kind of decent graphics.

This might be thrown as off topic so I will throw in something to keep it on topic.

Off Topic:
Are the 20" iMac's with the 256VRAM running Counterstrike through XP on bootcamp going to run Counterstrike at good frame rates?

On Topic:
I was hoping for the new ones to be coming out, I would like to get into a Mac, am I bummed out? Sure why not. Am I upset? No...Honestly, probably anything I buy will kick my Dell 600m 1.5 pentium M with 512 of ram and onbard Video to pieces. Right? Please someone say yes. If I can get away with playing counterstrike like the way I described, I am totally ok with it. Would I like something newer when it comes out? Sure who wouldn't, but you can't be mad at a company for not releasing something when rumors are saying they might. Be mad at the rumors for getting you disappointed. Apple has to make money and be strategic.

Would kind of make sense why they are doing the back to school and getting a free ipod, I mean...lets see, new ipods are suppose to hit around sept or so, thats when the offer ends...sept 11 (i think), so sell off product and move it out as much as you can. So would it not make sense that be the time they release new iMacs, they are encouraging the selling of their computers also? Maybe so...isn't Leopard coming out around then? Hmmmm....fresh new iMacs with a fresh new OS. AND you could plug in your brand new iPod. I will wait for the new iPods, in my opinion, i think we have already seen it, the iPhone, I expect something very very similar. I mean, they have the touch screen stuff down for the new iPod in the iPhone, its wide screen for a true video iPod. Form factor would fit...I think the iPod will not be to far off that design.

Tell me about it. Actually don't. I had a G4 450 sawtooth for almost 7 years and finally had to upgrade in Oct to a 1.66 Core Duo Mini as a holdover, expecting to get Leopard and a new iMac or Mac Pro this spring. When I heard that aluminum iMacs were around the corner that solved my dilemna of not liking the white iMac, but at the same time liking the space saving and not needing the overkill of the Mac Pro. But I really like the Cinema Displays and the MBPs because of the aluminum. So I am really looking forward to the new iMac if it shows up as rumored and I am quite tired of waiting. All that said, while I expect an upgrade to the video card and will order a BTO with at least 2GB RAM, 500GB and the best video card option, I'm not into gaming or anything that truly relies on cutting edge video cards, so that part of it isn't a huge deal to me.

That I can understand, though it hasn't been an issue with me. I'm the target audience for the iMac (I REALLY want an all-in-one), and I'd want the 24" regardless of how good the smaller models are. So I lucked out that way.

But for the money, it sure would be nice to improve the whole line with better graphics, etc.

Maybe Apple will surprise us...

Interesting Note: Bare Feats has shown that the 7600GT option in the current 24" imac is more powerful than the gpu of the new MacBook Pro. So if the iMac is to move to an 8-series card as the MBP has, what card(s) will be used? You would think that the new iMac would also get the 8600M GT, but that would be a step down for a bto 24" iMac. Unless they can stick a higher-power 8-series card in there, I would rather have a 7600GT or 7900GS.

My guess would be a 128mb 8600M GT as standard in the 17" (if Apple keeps it) & 20" and a desktop 128mb 8600GS as standard with a 256mb 8600GT or GTS as an option.

I agree. To me, Macs offer great value because they're performance doesn't seem to decay as quickly as PCs. I have to use PCs at work and the desktop I have that's about three years old is absolutely dieing. My home iMac that's just over 5 years old is hanging in there. I get the beachball fairly regularly, but the computer doesn't just freeze for 30 second spells.

I've read these forums for a few years now, and every time there is some sort of event (Macworld, WWDC, etc) folks get worked up about the rumors. When some of them don't pan out, many get really upset. I guess that's because most companies can't keep there future product lines a secret while Apple actually can and does. You'll know a rumor is solid if there is confirmation within 3 days of the event. Everything else is basically speculation.

I am on the same page as you. :) I have had my computer since January '03. I cannot play recent games(such as BF2142), without having to play like I am reading a comic book. Also, the hard drive is starting to die(it is extremely loud while rotating). I have been looking to upgrade for a while, and finally decided two months ago to go with an iMac. I've since been waiting for a new iMac due to the impending one. I am growing severely impatient(I am normally an impatient guy), but I don't want to buy one now, then have one with an 8600(which is in the MBP) come out the next week, or month for that matter, especially if it has a great new design.

Well, whatever is going to happen, this Tues & Wed are gone, so we'll see what happens next week. If not then, then July at the earliest, after the iPhone launch by a couple weeks.

Have to buy? Who's forcing you? You poor thing :(

It's not that were so desperate for the hardware; we're desperate for the the software. Mac users don't have a choice, they can't just buy the iMac now and upgrade it later. That's why people want a new iMac now.

Hey,

FIRST POST here!! :D

Been reading this forum for a while to see when in the world the new iMacs (or new HW in general) will be out..... i know is only speculation but that is ok with me.

Well, one thing i noticed is, nobody posts about (or maybe cares about) expandability when talking about the "new" iMacs. I wanted to buy a new iMac, but wanting to use it for Music Production, i noticed there is no way i can expanded it with a lets say UAD-1 (PCI) or UAD-1e(PCIe) card, so i changed my mind and wanted to buy a Mac Pro.

For me it would be really an Investment i don't need, cuz the processing power of an iMac would be enough, but to spend a couple of "extra" thousands of euros JUST to be able to attach a PCI card is really a bummer!

I know that the iMacs being closed, etc, etc, blah, blah, blah is the big "advantage" cuz they can produce them like chocolate bars in a factory without caring end user multiple choices on lets say a video card or a hard drive.

Well..... i can only hope that Mac changes their philosophy about the iMacs with the so awaited new release, at least they should have some kind of external port to attach PCI cards or something.

Cheers!

How about TC-Electronic's Compact or rack mount Firewire models? Different plugs and a slightly different direction but very well regarded nevertheless.

And with the best and most hardware available so that the iMac isn't that much of a hindrance.
