ATTENTION: APPLE DOES NOT USE BRUSHED METAL FOR ANYTHING. IT'S SIMPLY ALUMINUM. BRUSHED METAL IS THE GUI OF APPS LIKE SAFARI. LEOPARD RIDS THE WHOLE SYSTEM OF BRUSHED METAL.

APPLE DOESN'T MAKE A SINGLE PIECE OF HARDWARE USING BRUSHED METAL. IT'S MORE OF A "POWDER-COAT ALUMINUM" IF ANYTHING

Powder coat aluminum? Or anodized aluminum? It's anodized.

I'm going to have to add my voices for a new mid-range 'tower'. I don't care what it looks like, but personally I would like a mac between the Mac Mini and the Mac Pro.

People have been saying it for years, and it hasn't happened yet - so I'm not holding my breath.

My thoughts echoed those already posted.

"more premium offering" -- (a) does this mean more entry level models? (yay) and (b) does that mean prices will rise? (boo)

I am in the market soon for a new Mac if I can save up enough. I can wait until the fall when the new Macs, whatever I end up buying, start shipping with Leopard. It will be a nice upgrade from my current 12" PB G4 running Panther :)

Finally, the new iMac's enclosure is descrived as "brushed aluminum" to "better match that of Apple's high-end systems as the company repositions the iMac as a more premium offering."

I hope they offer some "premium" configurations to go with it.

And getting rid of the 17" is ridiculous.

Aside from that, a brushed metal look would be pretty cool. Either way I'm looking forward to see what they do with the iMac.

Then call me a time traveler, because I love the aluminum look. ;)

Hey, we could bring back colored brushed aluminum as well. :)

I hope the picture at 9to5 mac is 'wrong' in having two feet on the imac. mine 'hangs over' the table I have it on, so I'd vote to continue a center support... Not sure if adjustable height mechanism woudl work with the weight of an imac...

I don't expect a brushed-aluminum iMac. Why? Because the pro systems are brushed aluminum. How will the unwashed masses understand what is pro and what is consumer?

Mac Mini is not all plastic. By your logic it would be a Semi-Pro Mac. I don't think it really matters.

n00b. you have a point but who really cares?

Because consumers aren't stupid. They know what they want. Apple really needs to stop patronizing people.

What's a chin? The border under the screen on current models?

Precisely. A good number of people, myself included, find the extra real estate under the screen to be aesthetically displeasing. The only thing better than removing the chin entirely would be adding a 2nd, smaller screen (2 inches vertical that spans the width of the screen) where the current chin is now, and use said new screen as a way to always have the dashboard/dock visible without interfering with the main screen. This is an idea that is admittedly over-the-top and would likely add a significant amount to the price, but I think it fits in perfectly with Apple's innovation.

Maybe they'll just keep the 17inch iMac and rename it to eMac and then introduce the new iMacs which I think should be white with aluminium on the back just like the iPods.

does this mean that there will be something offered in a lower end system? Other than the Mini?

I have been wondering the same myself. When it was announced, or rumored actually, there would be no Minis in the future, I was puzzled. I have wondered if Apple decided to offer a machine which could have a low entry point, like the Mini, but upgrade to something people have been requesting..maybe just short a MacPro. It will be interesting to find out. Business needs a $850-$1000 desktop (tower).

Short of a mid-range tower that's what I've been waiting for.
Awesome. I'm in line.

Brushed metal doesn't mean ****. The Mac mini has a brushed metal enclosure, but it's clearly an entry-level computer. I think Apple will eventually move it's entire computer line to this appearence. It's more scratch resistant and sturdier than plastic.

Also, juststranded, aluminum = metal.

What throws me is the term 'brushed' aluminum. I wouldn't describe the pro line as brushed due to the lack of texture. but i'm psyched to see it either way. maybe they'll do the same for the macbook line when they SR it.

Q. What was using Steve Jobs one year ago to introduce Leopard to the world?
A. a 24" iMac

Q. What will he be using this year to present Leopard's secret features?
A. a xx" iMac

Q. A new iMac model?!
A. What else! :D

I don't care if it is brushed aluminium or shiny white, as long as it is new. :)

My €0.02

I don't understand the issue. Is it that people don't like cables hanging down from the unit?

Edit: nevermind. Alana already answered this one.

Matt

No, they just want the thing to be basically the size of a normal display to make it look better. Having the things necessary to make it a usable computer are of secondary importance.

My big hope with a redesigned iMac is that they make the hard drive accessible. I think its a scam that you practically have to get a service person to replace a hard drive on the current iMacs. Ideally I would love to see an entry level tower that is halfway between the mini and the pro, but I highly doubt that will happen. Apple seems to be stuck in the smaller is better market for anything except the tank of a MacPro and the XServe.

I for one would rather have a chin on an iMac than have to be an Apple certified technician if I want to upgrade my hard drive without voiding the warranty. Its like the tiny iPod shuffles, they lost one of their best features, the USB port so they could be half the size. Like the shuffle wasn't small enough as it is. Smaller isn't always better.

I am pretty sure that this iMac will look amazing. Just amazing. Even so - I am not sure if I am happy with moving the line into the alu direction.

SOrry if that annoyed anyone. It's can just be confusing because brushed is totally different.

Also, juststranded, aluminum = metal.

I know. My point was "brushed" is not what Apples pro stuff is. Anodized is the correct term. Thanks to whoever said that. I couldn't think of it.
