Introducing the new iMac. Faster. Bigger. Metal.

Yes it was done in Microsoft Paint.

ATTENTION: APPLE DOES NOT USE BRUSHED METAL FOR ANYTHING. IT'S SIMPLY ALUMINUM. BRUSHED METAL IS THE GUI OF APPS LIKE SAFARI. LEOPARD RIDS THE WHOLE SYSTEM OF BRUSHED METAL.

APPLE DOESN'T MAKE A SINGLE PIECE OF HARDWARE USING BRUSHED METAL. IT'S MORE OF A "POWDER-COAT ALUMINUM" IF ANYTHING

Thank you... Enough of this "brushed aluminum" nonsense.

When was the last time we saw an "Aqua" or brushed metal GUI element in a new apple application? Look at iTunes 7.2, FCP, iPhone, etc... new apps that seem to reflect a noted GUI change. Even the "X" on the WWDC leopard banners show that Apple obviously has something else in mind.

I am seeing lots of black nowadays in apple ads (aside from mac/pc guy) and on the apple website. I just hope the iMac does not look like the new "piano black" glossy HDTVs.

I could see something like this ... still a chin (unless everyone wants a 5" thick iMac?) but a nice metal look ....

OR the black/chrome look like the iPhone ... vey stylish!

Good move if they go metal - but I do find it a bit surprising. Should sell well because metal always seems more valuable than plastic.

What this says to me - new Desktop Mac to sit between Mini and iMac, especially now space has been created by dropping the 17 as well (if rumours are true).

Think headless about 10" square and 4-5" tall with real Mac parts for a home server Mac.

Not buying it

I'm not buying that they are going to drop the white iMac. It's so iconic, I'm having a hard time believing they would do this. I could see them adding a mid-range pro mac in an all-in-one style, but not replace the white iMacs.

Is that an aluminium iMac on the beach?
That's called an Apple Cinema Display.

Maybe WWDC '08. Quad core mobile CPUs are barely on the drawing boards. Cooling a 105w kentfield is a long way from cooling a 35w merom. Then again, that's why everyone else make desktops.
Actually in recent runs Intel has gotten 90w TDP out of Q6600 samples.

Hopefully the switch to larger internal sizes, limited by screen size and now 20/24", will allow more higher end parts and maybe and even more accessible interior. You can still keep it all-in-one while making it easy to get into. Remember the original iMac G5?

Remember Bondi Blue?

i think this would be a pretty logical step, although I don't see them introducing a non pro Mac pro lol.

a iMac & iMac pro would be a really good step I think, maybe bring the low iMac down to £649 or something pretty low to entice switchers?

I don't know if Steve is willing to deviate from the simplified product quadrant which has been so succesful though. Apple used to have a million different conflicting/redundant/useless product lines and when Jobs came back, I think simplifying it to iBook/PowerBook and iMac/Power Mac was one fo the best things he could have done. Yes, the G4 cube and mini have been thrown into the mix since then, but I quesiton whether the mini is about to see the same fate as the cube... Regardless, I have often thought there could be room for something between the iMac and the Mac Pro, but I just don't know if Apple would move in this direciton or not.

All that being said, if Apple is removing the 17" iMac from the lineup and presumably not moving the 20" model to the 17"'s price point, then that could create a gap as well between the mini and the iMac... hmm, guess we'll see what Apple does...

the "lamp" G4 iMac was iconic, too ...

White, Black, Metal, Purple. I don't care. Well yes I do, but I just want something new now. I have been waiting too long to switch.

brushed aluminum makes perfect sense

The mac pro is aluminum

the macbook pro is aluminum

the mini is aluminum

the AppleTV is aluminim

the cinima displays are aluminum

so..............why not the iMac???

also, I highly doubt the mini will go away, I predict the mini remains with bumped specs and a 17in. iMac for Education.

mabey it will look more like the current ipod nano with a flat face top and bottom and rounded edjes with the power button on on of the flat faces.

yeah that would be cool.

maybe something like this....

yes its a crappy cut and paste. but you get the idea :D

Personally, I hope the whole line doesn't change to brushed aluminum. I much prefer the distinction of Aluminum = Pro and Acrylic Plastic = Consumer. I kind of overlook the nanos because the colours of the cases make it more consumer friendly also I think it was a smart move to make the sides of the Mac Mini aluminum but the top traditional consumer plastic so it isn't confused with the Airport Extreme Base at a glance ( I have both products sitting beside each other so I know what I mean). Upgrades are fantastic, style change is also good (apple makes a habit of changing the iMac design whenever the masses feel comfortable which is a smart thing imho) and I'm even not totally against a high-end iMac being aluminum (it would be cool if they add a DVI connector to it so it could sit side by side with an apple display and actually match), but changing the whole line material wise I think would be a mistake. The white plastic is a signature to consumers, like the earbuds on an iPod.

very interesting. i'm kinda surprised at this. but it would be nice. if this is true, then i don't see them getting rid of the mac mini. they have to have a lower-end offering

Perhaps a nice expansion-friendly Mac Pro mid tower at 899? Black anodized aluminum?? I hope so.

I'd be happy if they went back to 1999 when they sold a PowerMac for $1500. Today that price category could be filled with a "one half Mac Pro". That's a machine that was one processor (but double or quad core) up to 8MB RAM and room for two drives. Just about 1/2 of the Mac Pro specs and $1000 lower price.

The "lamp" design was iconic, but not replicated throughout the product line. After the G3 iMac went "Snow" summer of 2001 (a few months before the iPod was released), they new they had a hit. It rippled throughout the product line effecting everything from power bricks to remotes and iBooks. It's difficult to compare the "lamp" design to the "white" signature.

Actually that was 2005, no really.

Thanks for the history lesson

Point is, Apple doesn't care if it's iconic or whatever, they're eventually going to redesign it. If anyone thinks differently, they're being dim. You could say the MacPro design is iconic (hey, they kept the G5 design and everything!) But eventually, it will change. As simple as that.
