I am really poor or does anyone else feel that £1250 is a lot to spend on a computer?!

And I'm not cheap, I'm just 'thrifty'...

:apple: Hackintosh G5 Enclosure: Conroe C2D 2.4GHz, 2GB RAM, 320GB, Vista/OSX86 = about £450 (home build)
:apple: 12" Powerbook: 1.33GHz, 768MB RAM, 80GB = £400 (eBay)
:apple: 20" ACD = £130 (the best eBay trade i've ever done!)

+ I just got £435 for my old G4 MDD PowerMac & Studio Display.

You're missing the part about how I've had my current computer for more than 7 years. To me it's like a car. I buy a nice one and drive it til the wheels come off. Make out better in the long run.

Perhaps because they WANT to streamline the line and make everything prosumer/pro at Apple...no prob with that.

As for upgrading, I fully agree...Intel Mac owners would feel little difference...but for us with single core G5s, 1Gb RAM and no access to BootCamp, it's worth proceeding..!

I don't think they do want to go prosumer on everything when one of the biggest reasons for people not switching is that apple is seen as expensive. Aluminium enclosures will not lower cost.

When i worked at Apple the company was run with a goal and the goal is getting people to switch.... it seemed like catering for the people already there didn't even figure in the equation. Therefore i cannot see these things being Alu, at least not the full iMac range.

Oh and agreed those on G5s would definitely see a benefit from this.

Maybe the delay with OSX Leopard and the new iMac go hand in hand. The new OS was supposed to be coming this spring, right? (I remember it being announced that it would arrive long before Longhorn--if you forget, that was the codename for Windows Vista.)

This could explain why it's been a long time coming for new iMacs.

What are the chances Leopard will be released earlier (before October), such as in August? I'm talking about the software engineering, not the marketing. Are the current builds getting close to gold master?

I'm guessing there will be some new way of computing introduced with the iMac, since iLife also seems to be delayed. The new software can only be launched once the hardware is available to showcase the new features (not available by using current/previous computers).

Actually I would contribute it to the iphone. It took so much of Apple's develpment team and energy just to push that out that it would just would have been too much to push a new OS and new hardware. And market it so that there isn't any cannalbalization of sales of either/or. I think that is the biggest reason we haven't saw any new imacs/minis(replacement), Apple isn't taking any chances that new Macs don't cannalbalize possible iphone sells.

I know you're 100% right, but where's the fun and excitement?! I suppose i'm the equivalent of a used car trader, always wheelin' & dealin'.

brushed aluminum or not, the new iMacs are probably coming this summer...it's been almost a year already (Which is a long time in this tech world)

You know, I'm always leery when these rumors start coming out about new iMacs in brushed aluminum. The brushed aluminum casing has in recent years always been reserved for the high end line-up of Apple products, whereas the white casing (and newly reintroduced black) has always been applied to Apple's more consumer priced products.

I will admit, I'd love to see an aluminum cased iMac, but I don't want to get my hopes up too much.

However, the Mac Mini was the exception to the rule, although technically it was both shiny white and brushed aluminum. ;)

Its been a long time for an Imac overhaul because Apple has nothing groundbreaking in the works or it wouldve happened already. PC computers are now an afterthought for apple.

At best, they'll maybe stick one of those san jose processors in there, ship it in a newly designed carton and viola'

At worst it'll be a pissant update like the macbook got.... by the way , when is the real macbook upgrade going to happen?

i just hope they dont drop the 17 inch line. I like the pricing of the 17 inch. I'm hoping that once these new iMacs come out i will be able to grab an older one for cheap. I hope i can do it. I visited my Bestbuy today and they said they were trying to sell out all the iMacs in their inventory. I guess people at Bestbuy log onto Macrumours.com as well.:p

Here's what I'd like to see in an iMac:
-4-core proc
-Same basic design as G5/Current (monitor & computer in one) but more like iPhone in landscape mode
-Expresscard/54 slots
-Multitouch screen
-OLED/multitouch keyboard
-Maybe option for stylus so you can "write" on screen
-eSATA ports

I don't know how many of you have seen OWC's modbook where they take MacBooks and turn them into tablet computers. Maybe Apple can somehow create a tablet/iMac hybrid that goes from 13" screen to 30" or something and sell stands so you don't have to carry it all the time. And maybe a docking station w/ extra USB, firewire & eSATA ports. Add in some extra hard drive & optical drive bays and that would be cool. Maybe something Star Trek-ish w/ a multitouch screen and keyboard. I say that b/c humans see on the vertical plane and use our hands in a more horizontal plane. Just my 2 cents.

Totally agree, especially for those people/organizations where $$ is kinda tight. I also hope they don't get rid of the Mac Mini. Maybe they can combine it w/ the Apple TV and add DVR/TiVo capability so you can record a TV show you like if you miss it and it's not on iTunes.

If there's "nothing groundbreaking in the works" perhaps it's because current Macs are already some of the best computers you can buy & that it's difficult to radically improve on excellence. The iMac may be redesigned, but as far as AIO's go, apart from updating its specs, there's little practical improvement to be made to it that's feasible.

What I'd like to see is an new upgradable, headless Mac at a consumer price...but that really would be a surprise!

Aren't the iPod Shuffles in anodized aluminum?

This makes no sense. The long time between upgrades increases, rather than decreasing, the probability of a significant upgrade. If the rumor is correct, we should expect significant changes, because a thicker case and metal housing allow for more components and better heat dissipation. More RAM slots, more HD bays, and more powerful CPUs and GPUs are some possibilities, and some sort of multitouch interface would be consistent with Apple's penchant for popularizing revolutionary changes in input and output devices (for example, the mouse, the laser printer, the SuperDrive, USB, Firewire, and the elimination of the floppy drive).

I'm planning to get a new iMac, but I'm definitely waiting for the new iMacs that should come out soon.

Hmmm... I'm pretty happy with my 24" imac, but if they came out with a 30" one, my DH has offered to take mine so I can get the larger screen. [ his PC is on it's last legs and he was planning to switch to mac when it dies] I really love that man.

I didn't know this but it would lead one to believe that the next iMacs are upgraded to Santa Rosa. That will get my credit card ready--I hope my G4 PowerMac understands.

I don't think multi touch will come in the next iMac. I am pretty sure Apple will do a pathetic upgrade to santa rosa like they did with the MacBook Pros. Multi-touch, express cards, blah blah blah are for people that dream (like me). I have long since stopped expecting such dreams from Apple... the same company who is stuck with Cingular for a very long time and who got the hype up about the sllight upgrades in MacBooks and MacBook Pros.

Apple has been moving retardly slow for almost a year now, no new innovation and no new enhancements/upgrades to anything. FCP2 and a cute little iPhone is all that we got. I am not dreaming or wishing for a new redesigned dream machine mini tower/iMac or whatever... I just hope that Apple gives us Leopard on time and somehow puts iLife 08 and iWork 08 in the same package.

Then I will be hoping that Apple gives us a real iPod update since that machine has been driving the Apple revolution and it has suffered more than the iMac.

Hello to everyone,I am an new guy in here.

I will like to apologize for my english as well:),

I own a iMac G5 2.1 20" and really I can't wait for a new hardware from Apple,
since my mac is having heat problems:(,I really don't know what to expect except from an upgrade to the mbp specs since this is what apple does for a long time now.
But I am in for a new design,I really don't know what's the passion with thiner iMac's?I mean if it was to solve the problem of heat and some other hardware issue's I wouldn't mind to see the iMac even at 3 inches thick,... maybe no chin and maybe some innovating specs.
I am not dreaming multi-touch screen here, but i would like to see the 20" to go at 1920X1080 to have a good graphic card and no heat problems at all,Oh and to be more easy accessible to the hardware (it needs cleaning now and then, you know dust inside him etc.).
My iMac is making the same noise as a pc does and i hate it.

I've only seen 2 mock ups in this thread: I'm disappointed!

If Apple is serious about being a desktop player it needs to bump up the specs of it's imacs, otherwise this new gaming hooha will be for nothing.

a 30" imac pro with a tiny chin and side vents that are the same as the mac pro's front grate would be killer. needs to look good with an acd next to it, which is the current imac's problem.

All these new products before Leopard release, It's so hard to resist!
I think Apple is right to release new iMacs before Leopard's release. This will allow people that want to continue running Tiger to get new hardware and the people that want Leopard can wait a few weeks more. There is also the added bonus that comes from people that buy new hardware now, then buy Leopard later.

based on Xserve

Here's a new thought:

maybe the new iMac is technically based on the Xserve instead of the MBP.
Of course with lowered specs, but it would be a good explanation for
"aluminium with industrial design"
Think of the technical structure from the Xserve on the side, in landscape
direction to the back of a cinema display. Airflow from left to right through
the box. Maybe with quiet radial forced cooling.

Room for a second HD maybe in a side-cartridge. The cartridge is sold as a "time-machine-option". Because of the much better cooling than in any iMac before, the graphic card is full size and interchangeable. Complying with the gaming plans Apple obviously has. We'll maybe see "made for Mac" high-end G-cards with Apple specific drivers at the Apple Store in future. I think Apple has nothing against upgrading as long as they get a piece of the pie.

Apple lost a lot of money with serviceing systems running too hot. If these systems are structural time consuming to service it even cost more.
Using the Xserve as blueprint could have solved both potential problems.
On top of that the new iMac has to have the ability to grow for at least
2-3 years. It simply cannot just fullfill todays cooling needs.

A little adventurous thought: power supply on the floor like the mac-mini
to get even more heat out of the cpu unit and to get the "brick" accepted
it's equipped with a subwoofer like the Anniversary Mac had. Technically
easy and fitting with the multimedia experience Apple wants to offer.

We'll see...
