Apple lost a lot of money with serviceing systems running too hot. If these systems are structural time consuming to service it even cost more.
Using the Xserve as blueprint could have solved both potential problems.
On top of that the new iMac has to have the ability to grow for at least
2-3 years. It simply cannot just fullfill todays cooling needs.

A little adventurous thought: power supply on the floor like the mac-mini
to get even more heat out of the cpu unit and to get the "brick" accepted
it's equipped with a subwoofer like the Anniversary Mac had. Technically
easy and fitting with the multimedia experience Apple wants to offer.

We'll see...

Makes sense. The power supply is quite big and produces a lot of heat. The Mac mini's power brick is almost as big as the computer itself.

Taking the power supply out of the iMac can make it run much cooler. I just hope they're not using a magsafe connector. Trip over the chord, BAM, computer off, unsaved data gone :p
I'd love to have a little battery in the power brick to act as a little APC unit. In case of a power failure, your iMac could go into safe sleep without you loosing data. But that's not gonna happen...

Still, I would not mind an external power supply. It's laptop internals anyway, so you don't need that many watts.

Whatever it is ... after a years wait .. it's going to be a let down. SR 2.2 & 2.4 in a brown and orange encloseure!:)

surely that depends on what you were expecting. Ideally i would like in the next imac

- 1920 x 1200 in the 20 inch,
- blu ray optional
- hdcp compliant displays

but it aint gonna happen. big difference between wanting and expecting, for a kick off i rec the mac pro will see blu ray before the imacs, and 1920 x 1200 would up the cost of the 20 inch model? when ideally if the 17 inch is going the cost should be coming down?

i think everyone on this thread have been around long enough to know re apple hardware update, be prepared to be underwhelmed until you are overwhelmed.

I expect the following as i have said before

20" model 1680 x 1050 resolution

2.2 ghz c2d upgradable to 2.4
320GB HDD upgradable to 750GB
2GB Ram upgradable to 4GB
128mb NVidia 8600GT M upgradable to 256

24" model 1920 x 1200 resolution
2.4ghz c2d
500GB HDD upgradable to 1TB
2GB Ram upgradable to 4GB
256mb NVidia 8600GT Stock option, EITHER same GPU with more vRam as a BTO option or maybe the 8700 GT as a BTO option, with vRam at either 320mb or 512mb, likely to be the former

BT and AE on both, with possibly a redesigned keyboard and mouse to go with

So in a nutshell, aside from the slightly larger desktop capacities, gear yourself up to expect MPB specs in a desktop enclosure, and you wont be disappointed.

Personally I think an external power brick for an AIO is an evolutionary step backwards. But this is just my own personal opinion.

In terms of upgradability, yserve and others on here have made good points. I would love to see the HDs, RAM and Graphics card all easy to upgrade. HDs and RAM being the most important for me.

I don't know why but all this talk of the new iMac is not getting me revved up. I actually feel like going out and buying the 24" iMac of the current design. I'm likening it to waiting ages for food and then losin your appetite because you've waited too long.

However, the Mac Mini was the exception to the rule, although technically it was both shiny white and brushed aluminum. ;)
Maybe the new iMac will look similar to the Mac mini. It will still have a chin, but it will only be big enough for the logo and a little bit of space above and below it. The sides and back will be aluminum and the front will be white with a small "edge" of aluminum, like the top of the Mac mini. If the screen will not have white around it then just the chin will. The only other option is the entire case is aluminum and the logo is white like the AppleTV. I am hoping the iMac gets a Mac mini look and the mini gets a good update, or at least 802.11n wireless to stream content to the AppleTV.

This coming week I really need a mac for a course I am teaching, in which I am required to burn some DVD's of student work for presentation. I have waited three months and I thought the new imac would long have been here. Now it looks like I am out of time just on the eve of the big update. Who knows maybe there will be something this Tuesday. Any suggestions?

I would absolutely love an update this Tuesday! Can't see it though. Personally, the only way we'll see an update this Tuesday is if they just update the specs. To be honest I would not mind that at all.

If it's gonna be a "striking new industrial design", I would expect an Apple event of some sort.

Without a doubt, Apple will never incorporate a MagSafe adapter on any device that does not have an internal power supply.

If memory serves, the 'striking new industrial design' that everyone is talking about was nothing more than another rumor from AppleInsider. Seems like everyone is counting on something like that, but I don't see any more chance of that than the 'brushed aluminum' or anything else that's been bandied about.

I'm afraid that whatever Apple comes up with, it won't live up to the 'striking new industrial design' rumor that everyone seems to be counting on.

Well, at least we all know that the CURRENT industrial design is by far the best in the world...so even if iMacs keep looking the same, they will still be the BEST AIOs in the whole planet, hands down...

re the design im expecting very similar to what the imacs are now, inside an aluminium/metalic like closure instead of white, with a slightly smaller chin.

evolutionary rather than revolutionary

Why get rid of the beautiful white??????????????
Aluminum is so common, and aweful

I couldn't agree more, especially since I'll most likely be buying one of these new iMacs when they are released next month. An aluminum design would look like the inside of a beer can--not very classy or very interesting. I have an ACD/Mac Pro setup at work and I feel the same way about it.

Totally!

Why get rid of the beautiful white??????????????
Aliminium is so common, and awefull

Definately agree about Alu, but not so sure about white. Don't get me wrong, I like it but I just think it's maybe starting to get a bit "samey" if you know what I mean.

Bring on the black, but keep the white. Polycarbonate please so I can enjoy that new mac smell...

heres my mock up! Im not super on CS so give me a break :d

I posted too soon. I think if you swap the black for the white that is on the Mac mini and make the space above the screen and on the two sides equal then you will have the new iMac design.

I personally really hope that they will come out this Tuesday of E3. As for the industrial design, I also hope that Apple doesn't release that in October with leopard, or for the back-to-school promo.

Have Apple ever done anyhting at E3? I would love to think that maybe this year s different but I can't see it personally.

Apple doesn't add a lot of drivers to their old OSes to support new hardware. If this is hardware that was supposed to hit after leopard, and uses any new devices then they would have the increased overhead of getting 10.4 drivers in place for it, which would probably mean diverting more resources from leopard. Given that, I'm really not expecting these machines until October, unlesss they are really really close to the mac book pros.

But they DID add drivers for new iMacs in 10.4.10! Someone snooped around the system and found new references to them. You'll find the article somewhere around....

Not necessarily, they could have just been for new display's that may be fitted into current iMacs.

Radical New Industrial Design Idea

The outside could be either plastic or aluminum, and comes in a variety of colors.

And they can be switched out for other color/material covers.

As an added bonus, the innards are accessible and user upgradable.

For example, say I got one with white plastic. But some days I'd rather have a black one, so I also buy a black plastic cover and switch it ous when I feel like it. Or maybe blue or green or orange or aluminum.

Or maybe they'd save aluminum for an iMacPro.

if we assume the new imac will be more than a speed bump then they will release it at a special event. How much notice do they give for showtime events?

The best part, though, is that you'll get a new keyboard with a shift key that works - so that you can type "I" instead of "i" and join the rest of the English-speaking world...

How ironic... my iMac's keyboard doesn't have a shift key that works... nor caps lock, space, return/enter, tab, control, command, option, half the keypad...

I've had to use a PC (gasp!) for the last few months waiting for a new iMac....
