What should i do guys?

Well I just ordered a 24" iMac...gutted! Is it worth cancelling and then reordering when this becomes official? God knows if they will let me do it - I ordered through a reseller.

To be honest, they seem thin enough as they are. I probably wouldn't need it any faster. But will it be cheaper (spec wise)? Or will the design be that much better that it would make me look at mine in a bad way? Why the hell don't they let people know earlier??? But then I suppose there will always be that line of one day not-knowing and then the next finding out. The speculation is killing me!

So, is cancelling a medium spec 24" imac worth it people? If it is just going to be replaced with similar models (okay, and maybe a different colour/finish) and a spec equivalent that is cheaper ( so that i could slightly upgrade for the same price) then waiting another month or two (including shipping) is not worth it.

However, if the new iMac/Mac/iMac Pro/Mac Cinema features a completely new design that blows away the current models and/or includes completely new features/hardware that I will surely miss out on (because I don't upgrade often) such as a new interface (multi-touch), blue ray drive, a significantly higher resolution display, or anything else that someone can think of - then it may be worth going through the whole cancelling ordeal.

Bottom line - spec isn't too important, and a chinless aluminium iMac I can get over. New features that I will miss - i play the waiting game! Ideas on either guys?

Finally, I realise this is a little self orientated so i thought i would put forward my opinions:

The idea of calling it a "Mac" seem perfectly logical as mentioned above to fall in-line with all the other models' names out there.

I agree with most that the chin has to go so that it fits in-line with apple's constant further minimalism evolution of products. However, the idea of a little chin to give the screen a solid base look and make it look more like a computer is feasible.

Surely it doesn't need to be any thinner, the difference between it and the cinema displays is minimal and no one needs those precious extra mm behind the computer except those few who wall mount them. Any thinner and it may lose that look of well built machine and turn it into a flimsy LCD lookalike. I say, keep the volume and use it to upgrade specs - just as others have mentioned.

I don't know much about spec upgrade predictions so i wont say anything on that.

After looking at all the above - basically an aluminium (brushed/sand blasted..whatever) cinema display with a better spec and a fancy new keyboard, it doesn't quite stay true to the apple style upgrades of it's iMacs. Although they have done it with the Powerbook/Macbook Pro.

The new models will no doubt ship with 2GB of RAM and an 8000 series GPU.
FSB and RAM will probably run at higher clocks as well.
IMO, that would certainly be a worthwhile upgrade for multimedia work.

BTW, I don't believe the rumors about releasing the new iMac prior to Leopard. I think this iMac will be held back until Leopard is ready.
Another iMac running Tiger would be so not Steve.

What makes you think they won't let you cancel your order? You still have the right to cancel. Who is the reseller? Was it online only or did you go into a store like PC World/John Lewis etc?

To be honest, they are really thin anyway, and the design is fantastic - maybe looking a tad tired now but it is still really nice. It's still a fast machine too. Another benefit is that it's a tried and tested product, meaning you are not going to encounter any revision a problems.

I hear what you're saying though about new features. I ordered one because I was so sick of waiting but ended up cancelled mine direct from Apple. They still shipped it but sent a courier to come pick it up 2 days after. They were really good about it. And I didn't get charged a penny.

I kind of regret sending it back though because I'm using this DELL inspiron at the moment and I just feel like my entire life is on hold! This won't do photographs or music! But I think I did the right thing. I did actually say earlier in this thread that if the new iMac wasn't released this Tuesday I was gonna go and buy a current 24" model again. However, given the new keyboard rumors, I am fighting it. I just hope it comes soon.

Not so sure I agree with you here... I personally think it would make more sense to release new hardware and a new OS at different times. It makes more sense logistically to me.

Plus, wasn't there new drivers for displays or something like that in the last round of Tiger updates? This could be hinting that the new "Mac" will be here whilst Tiger is still around for me. We shall see within the next few weeks I suppose.

What you aren't getting is that it's not possible.

Whatever man.... everyone says that about everything Apple makes then some guy has some rumor about a new keyboard and then everyone goes off the chain about multi-touch keyboards and this and that.

I know that it isn't possible now or ever or what have you but that doesn't mean that this 'mockup' isn't more in line with what Apple may do or may try. Slapping a black box on an already existing design isn't Apple. Every mockup that has come out so far isn't going to happen. The iMac is either going to stay the way it is with polycarbonate, stay the same way with a sleek aluminum design, or get a radical new design that we never saw coming. It will never look like the bottom casing of a MacBook Pro with a screen stuck in the middle of it that some high school photoshoper made during lunch time.

I don't mean any offense.

The screen looks much better from the front, quite bright. I wouldn't like the back of my screen shown off, but there is that polymer that darkens with an electric current. Perhaps it could be switched on/off. Glad that the back doesn't show through the front, that'd be annoying.

Yeah... there is some video clip at PCWorld magazine's site that shows some Japanese company (Sony) making an bendable LCD screen where the connections to it go along the bottom or the sides. So for those that still think this mockup is 'SO' not happening check the linky

I don't think that you can see anything behind the display and if this were to ever get off of the imaginative desk of some illustrator Apple would probably put something behind it so no one can see what you are doing on your screen.

I tend to agree. Either leopard will be released early, or the Mac Pro will see the update first.

Okay but it looks way too klinky with alumninum on the imac. Too industrial looking.

I prefer the imac the way it is considering that it would be much better with white plastic instead :D

Touch Screen

I hate to revisit the touch screen idea, but I was thinking about it. Everyone is complaining about holding their arms straight out to use the touch screen, but what if Apple brought back the iMac G4 design idea with a bendable neck. The screen can stay up while typing so you can stay all ergo-like. You'd still be able to reach up and flip through cover flow and such. Then swing the screen down to put it at Star Trek Enterprise level for using the touch screen for longer periods of time. Just a thought

I can imagine a multitouch keyboard WAY before it's implemented on a large LCD.
Not only would this be cheaper to implement, it would also be available at relatively low cost to ALL Macs running Leopard.
This would be especially relevant to those who are using expensive new 30 displays, and have no desire to upgrade the display anytime soon.
IMO, it would also make more sense, since the user's hands are already on the keyboard.

The other problem with implementing it on a vertical desktop display surface is roughly analogous to carpal tunnel syndrome; holding your arm out in front of you for extended sessions will eventually cause back strain.
This is not the same thing as a kiosk, poker or ATM machine; these machines are used on a very short-term basis.
I recently went to Vegas, and found the touchscreen function on the poker machines to be fatiguing after only a few minutes.

Damn good point - I would love to see this implemented - now that you said it it makes so much sense - would work with all the macs out there.

My hope is an aluminum multitouch pad with wrist support to go with the aluminum iMac and key board. Now I use a track ball with two buttons and every thing is done with fingers works well for me. Sill waiting for what ever it will be.

Sigh! I am just hoping for a computer. Multi touch, I doubt it.

People really need to let go of this multi-touch thing. It's a great way to control iPhone, just because it would be impractical to plug a mouse into a phone. Someone here said it before: mice have far greater accuracy than your fingers. Multi-touch on a computer would only be good for resizing images and moving windows around.

Anyway, as for this new iMac. I'm not getting a new iMac for at least another 4 years, but with the new keyboard and supposedly iLife coming up, I think I'm going to spoil my Mac with some new goodies within the next few months. That of course includes Leopard and Office 2008!

when does office come out?

LED backlit Displays?

What have you all heard about those LED back lit displays? Has there been any further rumblings about that? I like the idea that they are supposed to look better and last longer. I did hear about possible supply problems……

won't be used in anything over 20 inches for at least a year; too expensive. Maybe we'll see LED in the 17 inch MBP this fall, but not the next iMac.

Updated iMac ALMOST here...

The UK Apple website is now stating "4 days" to ship a standard configuration 24" iMac. So what I want to know is, does this mean that the refresh is coming within a couple of weeks? If that?!

This is surely a big giveaway!!!

***UPDATE:
It's 4 day shipping throughout Europe for the 24" iMac. Australia, Korea, US all still shipping within 24 hours.
