No, no, no, NOOOOO external power supply. Give me a chin twice as big before having an external power supply. BAD BAD BAD. Someone slap this idiot.

Power supplies go bad and are a significant source of heat. Having them external is not so bad. It means cooler internals and easier replacement should they fail.

Well, I think this rumour is a total crock. Here's why:

First of all, this has got to be at LEAST the second time this 'rumour' has been passed around by thinksecret, and it was rubbish the first time, when no new iMacs appeared.

2 - aluminium? Brushed? I don't think so. Very old school look, and how's that going to fit with their keyboards? I suppose they'll make it work, and yes, Apple never release something that looks silly, but I really genuinely don't think metal cased iMacs are coming. EVER.

3 - Apple's design department is locked up so tight it's impossible to get in, so if these sources are supplying info from inside, how come they keep getting quite simple details such as the release dates completely wrong? No, I don't think these sources have seen Apple's new design.

4 - a 30" iMac? Come on, people, 24" is so big you have to turn your head to avoid eye-strain if you're sitting right in front of it. 30" iMac screens ain't happening either. Remember this is supposed to be a consumer machine. 24" is the limit, I think.

5 - The streamlining of the Mac naming system leaves the iMacs as the odd one out. I'm almost positive that they will kill the iMac name and announce a new batch of products simply called Mac - then you'll have the MacBook and the Mac, the MacBook Pro and the Mac Pro...

That's my thoughts... I'm desperate for an iMac because my Powerbook G4 is being pushed to the limit at the moment. I need the desktop for speed and space, and to free up my Powerbook for 'on the road' stuff, which will make it faster as well (currently less than 10% capacity available). I'd have a 20" in front of me right now if it wasn't for these rumours! :D

I hope they address the reason why I will not buy a currentmodle iMac

1) There are no video inputs to the screen. So I'd need another monitor on my desk.

2) In a few years I'll b forced to toss out a nice LCD screen just because the computer in the iMac needs to be replaced, no way to use the LCD with another computer.

3) The iMac has zero upgrade path.

Apple's curent line of computers are all odd-ball specialties. There is no "mainstream" computer. They have a "Mini", a "Pro" and an "i" but where is the plain "mac" that most people want?

Why do you want video INPUTS to your screen, out of interest?

Personally I think Apples last waaaay more than 'a few years'. If you're in the kind of industry or doing the kind of work that demands keeping up with the current tech more often than every 3 or 4 years then you should just get a Pro and be done with it.

And anyway, why on EARTH would you 'toss out' an old Mac? Sell it on eBay you fool! Someone out there would love to have it! :D

Oh, and I agree with you about the naming. I think the Mini is going, the the iMac will die too, to be renamed simply 'Mac'.

im creaming myself.. apple better do me proud!!
i've really started to push my system to its max, i do audio/video production, with the 2Gb ram limit on my mini, i really am starting to realise that i need something with a bigger ram capacity-ideally a mac pro but as im still moving around quite a lot i need 'some' portability.. i've been oo-ing and aar-ing about whether to go for a macbook and max the ram to 4GB (i know it'd only recognise 3.3 or whatever) or whether to go balls out for the macbook pro.. but the cost of the mpb doesnt work with me-far too overpriced at the end of the day for the extra features u'd get.. The news of this 'brushed aluminium-resembling ACD look' (which for sure will be santa rosa based, although it would be nice if apple didnt use 'laptop' cpu's in their consumer 'desktop') is making me think, screw the mini, and/or the macbook, im gonna definately make the move to the imac.. i can imagine it right next to my 20" ACD, oooo the thaught...

and i mean they make those bags/cases for the imac's dont they?

only thing is, will they include FW800 on the 20".. or will it be exclusive to the 24" as it is on the current models.. that was one of the main things that attracted me to the mpb-as far as connecting a FW800 drive..

i spose we just gotta sit here and wait... as usual..
i hope its not a disappointment. here's my idea for what i 'hope' it looks like (i am no photoshop samuri)

WTF are you talking about? The power supply goes behind the desk. You don't see it. Jesus Christ.

Why do people make such ugly mockups of Apple Tech? Why do they just take a Cinema Display, iPhone, iPod, MacBook Pro or some other type of hardware that has already been used and make a new machine out of it thinking Apple would really do something like that?

Does anyone have any imagination... Dare I post the best mockup of an iMac to date yet again? Come on people... Apple didn't take an iPod and add 12 buttons to call it an iPhone... they did something completely new and innovative with the design. The next cheap mockup I see and I am going to scream.

It's only some folk having a bit of fun. Try not to take it too seriously.

I - for one - would not mind having the power adapter outside the iMac - to make it quieter and slim'er. Why is it that bad to have it outside?

And - the problem of having an age'ing computer but forced to "toss out" a perfectly fine screen/LCD sounds stupid to me. Sell the whole package. I usually have my desktop mac for 1-2 years and upgrade. Often I don't loose that much and it keeps my hardware top-of-the-line. Like now - sold my 2.0 Ghz Dual Core 20" iMac 3 months ago - hearing about the approaching update. I got 1600 USD and will get the latest by adding 300 USD. A good deal to me.

iMac Pro anyone???

Hope this is true, I still believe there will be white iMacs and maybe black iMacs.

So far the brushed aluminum has been reserved for the pro lines - macbook pro and mac pro.

Anyone else think that the brushed aluminum iMacs will be branded as "iMac Pros"???

Power supply outside would be fine by me, no problem with that. It can be white, black, aluminum or made of peet moss for all I care. I just want it to be faster than fast, with tons of ram. And I want it now!:D

Sorry, I'm with the other guy - I've got enough power supplies behind my TV for all the consoles I own - they're a royal pain in the arse. You only have to look at the praise that Sony got for doing away with the external power brick in their PS3 to see how people feel about them in general. They're horrid.

Nope.

I'm telling you now:

MacBook Pro and Mac Pro

MacBook and... Mac.

No more iMac, I reckon... It's the odd one out in their recent rebranding.

Sorry... I guess I was taking it to seriously. I had just come from some other thread (I forget which one it is) some random guy just flamed me for posting up one of the best concept illustrations I have seen. Then some other guys starts claiming how the screen is too dark.

How can the screen be too dark in a concept mockup of a not-yet-built possibly never built machine. Then the same guys posts some mockup that he made where he puts a black box over the side of his G5 and says that his was more reasonable and man was it bad, no imagination at all!

This is the best mockup ever... I don't care how many times I post it... I will post it until Apple makes it or something better.

P.S. I didn't mean any one person's mockup... I didn't mean to offend anyone and if I did I am very sorry. :)

To be honest, that looks like a nightmare for me. No privacy, and the cables are gonna be on blatant display. It's certainly different though. Also think it would give most an OCD, i.e. cleaning the darn thing.

What you aren't getting is that it's not possible.

I - for one - would not mind having the power adapter outside the iMac - to make it quieter and slim'er. Why is it that bad to have it outside?

The bad part about it outside is a big clunky probably black brick sitting outside. Even worse if the brick is next to the plug, taking up more than one space on your power bar.

I don't care as long as it isn't that second possibility.

I usually have my desktop mac for 1-2 years and upgrade.

You upgrade 1-2 years? I haven't upgraded in 7.

The screen looks much better from the front, quite bright. I wouldn't like the back of my screen shown off, but there is that polymer that darkens with an electric current. Perhaps it could be switched on/off. Glad that the back doesn't show through the front, that'd be annoying.
