Some people are confused about how people can get by with iOS alone. But it's invariably due to an app or apps they use that simply do not run on IOS, so ergo the 'gimped' label is applied.

Frankly, i'm very stoked about this. I've been waiting for this forever. A lot of us have.

When the MacBook Air is a thing, why does this have to be ?

They're not the same. I think it's pretty silly to spend this much on the iPad + keyboard when you could just get a Mac but on the other hand the iPad is probably a lot more enjoyable for some people so this combination is worth it. To suggest the MacBook Air is an equal/better option is nonsensical.

If you don't see how gimp the iOS/iPadOS compared to macOS then I guess your workflow is enough for a mobile OS :)

But the fact is it is nowhere near the capabilities of a macOS or Windows OS which provide full desktop functions. Maybe you're looking at it in the perspective that it can play 4k video, play some AAA games and it can do office applications. But a Raspberry Pi 4 with 4 Gb RAM running Raspbian can do that also and more. Although it can't play AAA games (Minecraft works fine :) ) but it can do more than iOS in terms of functions. It has better multi-tasking, multiple window/apps at the same time and accessible file system.

iOS is a mobile OS and it can't compete with desktop class OSes like macOS, Windows, Linux or UNIX.

I don't disagree with anything you said there except your use of the word gimp. You're coming at it from the assumption that if iOS can't do what a desktop OS can do then it's insufficient. It's not. It's DIFFERENT. It's intended for different tasks, uses, audiences, etc. For what iOS is intended for, it's awesome - and it's BETTER than a desktop OS for what it's INTENDED for.

There are absolutely use cases for an iPad with a keyboard and mouse/trackpad that meet needs that a desktop/laptop do not. That's what this is for. Your assessment that it's "overextending" misses that point - again because you're coming at it from the assumption that it needs to do what a desktop OS can do.

"iOS is a mobile OS and it can't compete with desktop class OSes like macOS, Windows, Linux or UNIX."

You're right in that it can't compete with desktop class OSes for desktop class tasks. But desktop class OSes can't compete with iOS for touch and mobile class tasks. For tasks suited to mobile devices, macOS, Windows, etc. are gimp. Admit that, and we'll be in agreement. Otherwise, I have to retain my original claim that you're missing the point.

What's cool? You do realize the the trackpad on this has VERY LIMITED functionality? AssistiveTouch only. It's not a mouse / cursor by any means.
Are you sure? From the video it looks like you can use t as a trackpad. It seems to function like connecting a Bluetooth mouse to the iPad.

I’ll definitely be getting this. I currently have the 11” Brydge KB. The typing experience, short cut keys, backlighting and infinite angles on the Brydge are all great. The trackpad is an awesome addition. I use the iPad a lot lying down on couch with it on my lap. I really liked the old 12” MacBooks but it generated too much heat for using it on a lap. Can see how the extra weight would put people off, but I don’t carry it around with me all day. I’ll probably wait for the new 12.9” iPad Pro to come out and make sure all is compatible though.

I have no issue using a tablet/touch screen for its purposes because its device has its purpose and function. However, slapping a keyboard with touchpad into it is over extending its capabilities specially if that tablet is running iPadOS. I can forgive Android doing that because it has a better multitasking and mouse support. If the reason for buying that keyboard is because you expect to do a lot of typing then it is better to get a macbook Air.

Yes I did, what was for me, an upgrade from the Apple iPad 11 keyboard to the Brydge Keyboard. A large part of what I do is writing and I prefer the iPad + keyboard to a MacBook, although I use a MacBook Pro to stream media to a couple of ATVs, and a few times a year I fire up an old iMac to run MS Publisher. I use each product in the way I want to use it and I don’t need anyone else trying to tell me which device I should be using or how I should be using it.

Well, if anyone is interested, the pre orders start ( 1/7/20 @ 11am PST ) tomorrow.

It also seems as if one of my biggest concerns is being addressed, as they are offering a $20 discount to previous customers 30 minutes before pre order starts. I leave whether or not a $20 discount is enough, to any of you. If you did get a Brydge in the past, you should have received an email about registering.

I'll be interested to hear from those who pull the trigger.

I personally signed up to be notified about the trackpad.

Ha, I'm a previous owner and I didn't see anything about a $20 discount or a note to make sure I'm registered to receive it (I'm on their mailing list and signed up for pre-order notifications).

I need a keyboard for my new 11" iPad Air, was going to go with apple keyboard, but not sure if there are other better ones? any thoughts? thanks

Surely the draw to this would be it should work with the new ipads too given it just fits when you connect it?

Are there any reviews out there yet? I’ve got a BT mouse and an Apple folio keyboard. Some I’m wondering how good this is?

No one has one yet. They said the end of this month for the first orders, but the way things are now, who knows. Hopefully they will send out review units soon.
