The food in Britain has improved, I can attest that. But it started from a pretty low level.

London has fine Indian cuisine. ;)

Actually, food really isn't bad in England. It's just not much better than in most countries. Generally, I'd rate restaurants in most "Western countries" as being of similar quality. I'm not talking about food that you get in restaurants located in small villages in Austria. No. Of course that's going to be different than food in Spain. However, the restaurants in the big cities will all be decent.

Anyway, my best eating experiences have all been in Asian countries. If you want to eat well, I think Hong Kong is a good place to start. It was also under colonial rule not too long ago. ;)

Er. No. American food over here is pretty much the low-end.

I think it's probably low-end in American as well. ;) What is "American" food anyway? All their fine restaurants will be Italian cuisine, while the low-end restaurants will be an Americanized Italian menu with the ddition of steak and burgers.

Only a little mockingly. However, I wasn't really joking. ;) Most low-end American restaurants have a similar menu:

1. A selection of chicken fingers, burgers, and some sort of Mexicana cuisine, like tacos, or salsa and dip.
2. Americanized Italian pasta.
3. Grilled foods section with 2 or 3 steaks, and grilled chicken breast, some with tomatos on top just to make it look Mexican or something.

The taste isn't very complex or impressive, but the recipe is easy and the food is safe to eat. Low-end markets always sell their products as a commodity, while the good restaurants always sell their stuff as something you should be proud of owning, or in this case, "eating".

That's why I asked what "American" food is? It's just food adapted mainly from places like Italy and Mexico, but with a combination of grilled foods. I can ask the same question about Canadian, Australian, or English food. Canadian food is just like American food, while Australian food is a mix of grilled stuff with Asian food (rather than Mexican). It's not really such a bad thing, as French-Japanese "fusion" is so damn popular now.

When you're on vacation overseas, someone will ask you what "American" food is. How would you answer?

I consider "a meat and two veg" the stereotypically standard English meal, and it's actually what many people there still eat. My ex-girlfriend was like that. Nice girl, but you couldn't take her out to eat. She missed her "meat and two veg" too much. London isn't quite like that, but the rest of England counts too.

Well since now you're talking "low end" you might as well say it's all hamburgers and be done with it.

You are quite wrong, anyhow. I could quite easily point out menus from several favorite restaurants all of which serve excellent meals, none of which are even remotely Italian, Mexican, or put tomatoes on top just for color. If you've ever spent any time here I have to wonder where you've been eating.

You also apparently haven't heard of "California Cuisine," which is the style of cooking developed here 30 years ago, which you can now find just about everywhere.

If Buffet can't stop it and he doesn't like the new management, I'm sure he'll sell and walk away.

Generally he tends to buy and let others deal with the day to day, if things change he sells.

Likely he has a right of first refusal on the sale anyhow.

Now? I mentioned low-end in my original post, and since I did live 45 minutes away from Buffalo, I do kind of know what I'm talking about. We get a lot of the American chains in Canada as well. Actually, our restaurants seem nearly identical to yours.

I'm not saying there are no other types of restaurants in America, nor was it ever implied in my post. You can point to menus from your favourite restaurants, but how many of your favourite restaurants exemplify the "American menu"? To say that the menus of America's restaurants aren't 90% borrowed from other cultures is wrong. In fact, it may actually a good thing. That's why I ask what "American" food is. Sure, we know some of it is crap, but that was mockingly. The truth is, it's not really "anything", or from any place.

And some of the best restaurants in the world are American, and they're mostly French cuisine.

I don't think there really is an "American food". It is all a mix of other counties and cultures rolled into one. Hot dogs and hamburgers I guess is american, or any cookout food.

You also can't judge the food by a chain restaurant, you need to go to a real restaurant with a real menu.

Sorry, but I can agree with almost none of this. First, if you're going to be limiting this discussion to factory food, then we need to understand that it's all fairly terrible, no matter what chain restaurant you care to mention, and no matter what country you're in. Those restaurants are completely off my eating map. This is not "American food" -- it's generic hog slop.

Second, if you're going to argue as you have that "all (American) fine restaurants will be Italian cuisine" then it become painfully obvious that your experience with "American food" is limited to chain restaurants. See above for my feelings about factory food.

Third, it's easy to see that cooking throughout the world is based on ingredients and methods derived from a variety of cultures, particularly in the US. This does not mean that no style of cooking can be identified with the US and particularly with regions of the US. Take Creole for example. Or the previously mentioned California Cuisine.

I think you need to quit eating at those awful chains restaurants. You'd change your opinions about "American food" in a hurry.

I blame it on too many Duvels.
Is such a thing possible?
IBudweiser calling itself the "King of Beers" says more about the American palate--or lack thereof--than about Budweiser's quality or taste.
And that's why A-B, SABMiller, and Coors having slowly been losing market share for the how many years?
Bud is Americas beer because it is the most widely available. It does taste better from the tap however.
I bet it would taste better if they stopped using rice. Contrary to what their new commercials say, they have NOT been using the same recipe for 130 years.
Good, I thought I was the only one that though that Stella Artois made Sam Adams (Boston Lager) taste good by comparison.
Hey, I quite like the Boston Lager. (Even though it was originally called St. Louis Lager. :p)
But I agree very much that Stella is vastly overrated.

Well looks like it is only getting started, a fight to become the #1 brewery in the world and cement that in the US.

InBev pitches buyout to Bud owner's shareholders

Ugly as some of the stuff that went on with Disney not long ago, looking for the shareholders to vote on removing board members without cause. Probably looking at changing CEOs soon to better their case.

Hopefully they'll close the Bud breweries and have them all brewing European beers. Then we might be able to buy a decent pint when in the US :p

And if we're really lucky it might educate the American palette and they'll also stop putting so much damn sugar in their food, meaning we can also find something to eat over there to stop ourselves getting drunk so quickly :D

hey here's an IDEA.,.,,. YOU STAY OVER THERE AND DRINK YA PINTS AND EAT YA GOOD FOOD WITH NO SUGAR .,.,I'll stay here in the U.S. and drink my BUDWEISER,,,, or as you people call it.,.,piss in a bottle

^-- someone got out of bed on the wrong side.

well I really didn't,,,,,,, however if he's going sit here and dog the USA in the fact that we don't know how to make a good beer or cook good food maybe he should just stay home. The fact that he would say Hopefully they'll close the Bud breweries and have them all brewing European beers. Then we might be able to buy a decent pint when in the US that just shows me how SMALL minded he is. Nobody makes him drink a Budweiser when he's here,,,,, if ya don't like it DON'T DRINK IT !!! As much as we have lost in this country,,, I know this,,,,,, It's still a FREE country,,,,, so if ya don't like it your FREE TO LEAVE !!
How about if HE get HIS European beer makers to SPEND A LITTLE OF THEIR MONEY on advertising in the U.S.A. and then he could have his wonderful pint when he comes over here.
I don't think what I said was bad, ,,, he's the snob here, just because HE doesn't like Budweiser we should shut it down so HE can drink his pint of that THICK junk juice he calls beer,,,,, I don't think so.
Have a nice day:)
I'd love a reply.,.,;)

This is a civilised and light-hearted discussion about the sale of a brewery, and by association the merits of other similar beverages sold around the world. Not about how free people think they are in a certain country, however they want to pin potential insults at each other (I'd urge you to read the forum rules), or how crap you assume this other beer may be.

How about you have a nice day.

So what I said offended you, but when he said is ok? So what your saying is that it's ok for HIM to pin potential insults on us,,, the USA,,,, Just not ok for us to throw it back? So when he say's ( Hopefully they'll close the Bud breweries and have them all brewing European beers.) that's ok? This is not Europe,,, it's America ! Budweiser is an AMERICAN beer.
If he wants to brew European beer here then his European beer company should spend the money & build breweries in the USA. He should not wish for our Budweiser plant to be shut down so as we can brew his beer here.
Now I hope that's not too insulting for you or anyone here.
Just so you know ,,,, I'm having a very nice day &
it will soon be better when I sit down tonight with my Monday nite Football & an ICE COLD Budweiser....:D
