Bumpers? Screen protectors!? These threads are getting hilarious...

I was doing a little research trying to decide between the Sport model with ion-x glass and watch model with sapphire glass. While the sapphire is harder to scratch, the info I read says it will fracture easier than the ion-x. Which is why they used the ion-x on the sports model. It is designed for everyday use, where as the other models are more for business and upscale dress. I've decided on the sport model for me, because I'm more interested in it for the fitness apps.

If you're interested in a sports watch that doesn't measure your sleep cycles, cannot measure your running distances without a phone, cannot time your laps when swimming, isn't (as far as we know) dust proof, shock proof, water proof enough to swim in, or functional at extreme temperatures - then by all means get the Apple watch.

Indeed. It's the same context as <insert car model> "Sport" simply meaning stripped down.

Good, I'm glad. It was meant to be super condescending. Because all of this talk is stupid. You can't buy taste.

Enjoy your watch. If you want to put your beautifully designed iphone 6 in a big brick case to protect it, then that's fine, though hilarious. You take this incredibly well designed tool, engineered to be light and thin, and stuff it in a brick to 'protect' it. I just find it hilarious. It's like buying a beautiful car or fine furniture and wrapping it in plastic. It's just silly and beyond bad taste.

Applying that thinking to the watch is just hilarious to me. You guys are missing the point entirely. I don't think you understand entirely what a watch is. It's a tool to be used AND something that makes a statement. A Panerai says something. So does a Patek Phillipe. So does a Bell and Ross. And they all say something completely different. The cool thing about the apple watch is there is so much variability that you can have complete control of what you want to give off. The stainless steel is a good mix of utility and handsome, elegant design. If you want to put yours in plastic and wrap it to 'protect' it, be prepared to look stupid. Reminds me of a pocket protector or something.

To be fair to those who buy iphones, they are designed for form over function. They are fragile. the case is dinged and scratched easily and when that one big squirt out of the hand happens, you're likely looking at a destroyed screen. Considering people are paying $1000 or more for these phones (a little more if they bought them with a false subsidized 2 year plan for $299 up front) These phones should in a thick orthopedic case like the old 4 and 5 that took fragile glass to the back as well) As for the watch, if you have $400.00 burning a hole in your pocket, order a Seiko Classic Diver Self Winding watch. My is over ten years old, waterproof look s like new, never needs an OS update and is a classic. If you're buying an Apple Watch wear it bare - The novelty of the thing will wear off before it gets too banged up and ends up in junk drawer anyway. That or when the "all new Apple Watch Air" comes out next year, you'll realize its not worth trying to keep up with both phones and watches every year, than it will go in the junk drawer because you know Apple will change the design in such a way that you look like a loser wearing the old one.

Exactly!! It's HILARIOUS

I completely disagree. An iPhone isn't a fragile thing. It's engineered to hold up to use and to life. It's made of glas and aluminum, not paper. If you drop it or if you're careless, it can break, absolutely. It's certainly not necessary to encase it in a massive plastic and ugly brick to suddenly make it functional.

Here's the thing - apple products are as much art as they are tools for productivity. I appreciate design. I love beautiful and considered things. I appreciate the way apple simply makes things work. The phone gets out of your way. Hopefully the watch will work the same way. I've never understood why people bother with Apple products only to wrap them in 5 feet of plastic and other tacky and tasteless 'protection'. It's like buying a beautiful Porsche and then wrapping it in a hummer-like armor! That's what an otter box looks like to me. It's a goddamn stupid tank. Now, if your job requires something like that - then I get it. If you have kids - I get it. However, if you're simply careless, I think it's weird. Just be mindful. That's how I've never broken an iPhone. I like it, therefore I've never dropped it.

A watch is going to get banged up. Oh well. We're all ok with phone cases because you don't wear a phone. You wear a watch. A watch is about style. No one wears a 'watch case' because that's stupid, OCD, and ridiculous. Ever wrapped your sunglasses in plastic? No? Well aren't they fragile? What happens if you drop them? Designer sunglasses aren't designed for maximal impact protection. They're designed for style. Apple products, while durable, are designed for style. For beauty. I don't care if you don't understand that - everyone can do what they want. But then I don't understand why you'd want an apple product. Get a waterproof plastic **** phone from Samsung or something. I'm sure they'll have a nice plastic waterproof tank watch for you.

Some people like Panerai. Some people like swatch or g shocks. But I don't want to wrap my Panerai in a goddamn g shock casing. That's unbelievably stupid. It's literally missing the point of owning a beautiful watch. To LOOK at and ENJOY the beautiful watch.

It is hilarious isn't it. As Apple products have become increasingly popular the IQ of the average poster on Macrumors has reverted to the mean. Eight years ago you visited this site to read lots of insightful and helpful posts, now it's filled with posts like "Should I get a screen protector for my watch"!

Well blame it on Apple, at least with the Iphone and etc. there was information to share. With the watch it is all a secret, and everyone is either making things up, guessing, or hoping. So we can all find out about what is real come the 24th ;)

It is both hilarious and ridiculous. There is definitely something wrong with 'protecting' a $600 watch. I've been to MANY watch gatherings (yes, this is a real hobby) and have personally handled, worn and owned watches from $5k to 30-50k. You know how many watch 'protectors' I've ever seen? NONE. EVER.

This is not because of WEALTH. Its because of STYLE.

Be prepared to be laughed at.

How the f are you going to even be able to see the screen protector on my watch to laugh at me??
Yo... they're this color called CLEAR!
I've never (other than poorly applied ones) noticed someone's screen protector & couldn't tell you which of my friends use a screen protector.
Also... I don't care.
Also, I can't imagine being cruel & petty enough to actually publicly laugh at someone over something so incredibly insignificant.

If these people are as anal about the new watch as they are about their iPhone, this place is about ready to get crazy!

I agree. Everything from "this pixel looks weird" to "do you see this yellow tint?" to "every watch I get has a scratch that I can see if I hold it in the right light at sunrise; should I replace it for the 10th time or should we all agree that Apple is a failure and they're trying to screw us all???"

LOL. It should be crazy up in here.

I can see a screen protector on a phone. Easy. You cannot see them?

Wow.

maybe you need to get your vision checked because it's always super obvious when people have screen protectors on. especially considering most people suck at putting them on and end up with dust and hair stuck underneath and with the edges peeling up. Blegh. if you plan on doing this with the apple watch you should just stick to your dorky g-shock.

You absolutely positively do not need a screen protector for your watch. As I mentioned earlier, I have 3 watches that are all sapphire crystal and in 10 years of wearing them you know how many scratches and nicks I have? 0. I've fallen off my bike, been hit by cars, been tossed around in waves, etc etc. I do EVERYTHING with my watch on, and the sapphire looks as good as they day I bought it. You do NOT need a screen protector.

And let me just add as well, that anyone who adds a protector of any kind (screen, bumper, etc) to a watch is completely missing the point of owning one. You're free to do what you want obviously, but you're going to look like a tool. You know why? Because you are one.

michael, we get it. You're very worried about appearances. You buy expensive watches because they can make you look more manly. You go to parties to compare your manhood. You buy expensive sunglasses. And you start threads to mock those who are worried about protecting their stuff in a way that would marr the image that is precious to you.

Leave them alone. I think this is less about you helping them than fanning your own ego.

BTW, my "tool watch" is a terribly scarred Timex. Has kept perfect time since I bought it 15 years ago.

No, you don't get it. Like others have suggested, he wasn't harsh enough. I don't agree that the Apple watch is a beautiful piece of design, but IF I did, I'd also say it's sad that people want to cover up that design with completely unnecessary screen protectors (and they ARE unnecessary) or ugly bumpers. Watches are for wearing, and every scratch or dent or nick they acquire add to the personality and character of that watch. I own nice watches, but I own them for me. I don't care what anyone else thinks, and neither should anyone else, but if what you want is to cover it up with bumpers and protectors, then I'd advise that you save yourself a few hundred dollars, and buy an ugly G-shock, because a large part of what you're paying for with Apple products is the industrial design. If you don't care about that.. go buy Samsung, or something made of plastic. Especially if you're planning to cover it in plastic.

i actually preorder bumper from actionproof. its not like i cant afford another one of those apple watch sports. its just i dont want to, if i dont have to by buying 20-30 bucks of protection for it.

i have my own business( melee and diamond buying and selling) and i work on weekends at local dg market. so when im at my business i can just wear it without bumper or heck i might just wear 24/7 who knows lol. but when im at dg theres alot of chances of bumps and running into stuff. my gshock has been thru some hard times at store.. ex: getting stuck into roll retainer cage,if its busy and short on people you intend to rush things and couple of times i have hit my watch on safe to get money or change.

so yeah thats just me :p

so if i can save another 450 bucks because of a 20 dollar bumper, ill take that lol.
That extra money can go into gen 2 watches :D;).

Does it not occur to you that they may buying a smartwatch, not a status symbol? The Apple Watch will be technologically way ahead of any other smartwatch when it is released, regardless of aesthetics, so some may buy it for that reason alone. If they want that tech on their wrists and want to protect it, why does that offend you? I get the point that covering sapphire makes no sense, but the metal will scratch. Despite some beliefs that watches should be enduring pieces of jewelry, the Apple watch is, first and foremost, a smartwatch. The tech in it will be outdated within a few years, just like the first iphone, and some may want to preserve resale value.

Sure, how do you like your Kool-Aid? Not one fanboy would not take that new phone being a few mm thicker to get all day battery. it IS hard to hold without a case. As for the Watch, I would never own a watch with a computer destined to make it outdated in a year. To each his own, but mark my words, watches ARE fashion. Once 20% of the pop is walking around with those ridiculous black screened blobs, there will be a backlash similar to Gl*******s...

People who use screen protectors are stupid!

Used iPhone 5S (GG2) for a year = no scratches

Used iPhone 6 (IonX) since it came out = no scratches

The trick is simple = not about keys or coins, just don't let sand accumulate in your pocket.

Sand can really scratch (remember sandpaper?) things. But you don't have sand on your wrist. Or anything that can scratch IonX (fabric, leather, buttons, are all softer)

What you do have, is impacts from real normal day-to-day life. But a screen protector won't save you from that magnitude of impacts.

Agree to disagree.
I work at a cell phone shop. I am the king of Zagg application... regular & tempered glass. I cover the back of my iPad so I don't need a bulky case. I have already ordered a military grade screen protector for my Apple Watch & couldn't be more satisfied with my decision. It will make it have less glare, yet still look glossy, resist fingerprints, and be self-healing, if I do scratch it.

Lol, go ahead & laugh at me.
I am NOT that insecure.

Military grade! You bet your ass I'm laughing.

Deal with the fact that it is up to the person to use or not use protection.

My advice would be - get over it. No one really lies getting their watch scratched. It just happens. But they're meant to be used. Scratches will happen. The crystal is tougher than you'll ever believe possible. Enjoy your watch. Don't rush to cover it in a nerdy ass bumper or cover the sapphire in a stupid ass 'protector'. If you do - you're hilariously missing the point.

This is what this whole thing makes me think of ;)

Wow, watches are fashion? Who knew? Thank you so much for the clarification.

Google glass, while interesting, was just hopelessly nerdy. The jury is still out on apple watch. Who knows? My gut is that it'll do well. It seems cool enough. I'm not sure what 'point' you're trying to make at all though. My iPhone battery lasts way more than a day. Part of the reason I bought it was because its beautiful. I'm sure there are a million nerdy engineering guys wearing ridiculously ill fitting shirts and slob-like pants who would love the iPhone to be shaped like a goddamn battery brick. Well, that's why Samsung exists. Apple has always positioned itself for people that like design and just want to get things done. Microsoft existed so engineers could play around with a platform.

Take Tesla. It's a beautiful car. I'm sure there are people out there that would prefer 100 more miles of range and would rather the car look like a bread can to deliver it. Well, I dont. That's compromise. I wouldn't want the phone to be 5mm thicker to accommodate an extra hour of battery life. It's not hard to hold without a case. Youre probably just careless.

Thanks, but I'm not too worried about appearances. I'm just stylish and fashionable. It really isn't something I think about. It's an inherent quality. Some people are social retards and have no fashion sense at all. Nerds. They probabl don't work at being hopelessly uncool. Just like I don't work at being effortlessly stylish.

I buy expensive watches because I like them. I like beautifully engineered and finely crafted objects. That doesn't necessarily mean expensive things, but it's more likely. I like nice sunglasses because I prefer real glass lenses over polycarbonates. I like Persol 649's because they're stylish, timeless classics that are put together by hand. They just happen to be expensive. I buy a pair and they last years.

You're absolutely right - I started this thread to mock people. Covering a watch in plastic is stupid. I don't care if you do it - I'll laugh at you, right along with everyone else. I'd be doing hat either way. But if someone reads this and realizes that 1. Sapphire won't scratch so there's no need to cover it - then great. I've helped someone. 2. Watches are jewelry but they're also tools. They're meant to be used. It isn't a phone. Don't wear a cover on it. Nerdy tech guys don't know that. They buy pretty smart phones and put it in an otter box like they're special forces guys about to recon a jungle hideout. The most physical activity these guys probably get is takong their phones out of their pockets to find out where the closest Burger King is.

A watch isn't precious to me. You'd realize that if you read my argument - scratches are part of the character. So are dings. It's just life.

Oh, and I don't go to parties to appear more manly, or wear watches to make me appear more manly. I wear shirts that fit and I wear pants that fit. It's not that hard.

You gut tells you it will do well? Are you serious? It better be a smash! almost 12% of my investment portfolio is betting on it! I do not own an iPhone, I have a phone that actually serves me well with at least 4 key features I use daily that iPhone 6 users are hoping for in 6S. Your iPhone 6 fellows here are the ones who complain it is hard to hold and want a thicker phone and more battery.

Personally, I would not put a case on a watch because you wear it on yourself and I care about the look of my watch because people can always see it on me and I don't want a big bulky watch. But if people want to put a case on theirs because they don't care about that, I won't be the one telling them their stupid for doing what they want with the look of what they bought.

As for the iPhone, I have an otterbox on my iPhone 5 since day one because I honestly care more about the functionality of my phone than its look because it's in my pocket half the time. Also half the people I know have a shattered screen on their iphone because they dropped it one or two times without a case and it broke, so I tend to be cautious with that. I don't put the little plastic protector on the screen though, because I don't scratch or care about tiny scratches on my screen.

So, because I go to the beach a couple of time in a year, I should use a protective film all the time?

It never fails to surprise me that people make statements like these.

Comparing the use of condoms to using protective film on a phone/watch = *facepalm*
