Engineers had to be redeployed for more "urgent" projects.

OMG is that the new crapple?

This stinks if it is true because everyone has been waiting for quite a bit, now its gonna be another couple weeks away.

"Everyone"? Seriously, how many people are waiting for an iPhone SDK? It's only use is for those who want to write applications for the iPhone. Of all the people here what fraction would have even the slightest clue about how to use the SDK.

Try not checking any news on the iPhone or SDK for a week or so.

It's really not that big a deal when it comes out.

very true. everyone thinks there is going to be a big hoopla and event when this comes out. it will be a minor release, not even worthy of front page news on apple.com

why does everbody assume their would be a press announcement event for an sdk, I assumed there wouldnt be and that it would just be seeded to developers and then a while later we would hear about how apps are delivered after all the sdk itself isnt aimed at the general public.

split hairs much? ok regular posters on this site may not be waiting for the SDK itself, but they are waiting for the applications that will come once it is released. for some reason i think you understand that but are just trying to be difficult.

It would be nice to have, but why wait?

Why not stop crying for the SDK and build a nice web app like the rest of us.
There are several nice tools out there to help you do that. The one I like the best is called jPint. You can see it here"

How much stock do you a__holes own? With the market in the shape it is and the sentiment as it is towards Apple, this is a big f_cking disaster. Can Apple get anything out on time? (Leopard, SDK, Time Capsule, iPhone updates, ATV updates, etc.) Oh, and the silent arrogant approach is working real well. No wonder people love to see Apple get pummeled.

Meanwhile, my gains are evaporating needlessly.
Waaaah

There are all those people who jail broke their iPhone for the sake of games and such. People who want a more complete smart phone out of the iPhone. An SDK also means a way to get third party apps without having to jailbreak your phone.

Do you actually expect anyone to take this, your first post to the site, seriously?

Yes, I have jailbroken my phone, went back to factory, then decided to try it out again, and then am back at factory yet again. Would I like to have an IM that worked in the background, yes, but you also have the problem that if EDGE is in use, phone calls are automatically sent to voicemail. I don't disagree that the iPhone is a wonderful device, and as a programmer I do see the potential in having an SDK for it. However, the device the way it is now does everything I need it to. Well, except have the ability to do RADIUS (802.1x) authentication, and even jailbreaking it, and finding a package that will allow that doesn't exist. (As I attend a university that requires 802.1x authentication). When I have a Palm and/or Sony handheld, I used 3rd party applications all the time but it came down to the core functions of the device. Which is why I see that people are talking about being so important, which if the phone portion stops working then they get mad at Apple. I want the SDK jsut as much as other people do, but its important they get this right.

I wish they had actually previewed the SDK at Macworld. If the SDK and delivery method turns out to be unpopular on top of being delayed, it's going to be a perfect storm of whining. By at least showing the SDK earlier, the blow would be softened.

Showing an SDK at a consumer oriented show would have been a snore.

Thousands of people stampeding to touch a Macbook Air and five lonely iPhone engineers sitting in a corner trying to show anyone who'd be interested just how cool compiling code for the iPhone can really be...

Take as long as needed to get it out. You think people would complain about it being released late? Just imagine the complaints if Apple were to release an on time but worthless and buggy p.o.s.

As far as i know though, they haven't actually released a release date...

I put my vote on your guess! Apple must loose credibility with partners and money from all the jailbreaking. Even though it's a clear sign that the business model does not really work. It's kind'a strange you can buy the iPhone without commitment to pay the monthly fee.

I knew it would be delayed. I replied to someone who asked, "Why jailbreak with the upcoming SDK?" Well, here's the answer.

I'm willing to bet the SDK is delayed because they want it to work with only a new upgrade (1.1.4 or 2.0 or whatever they want to number it) And I'm willing to bet that the new upgrade is going to break all forms of jailbreaking. They'll probably TRY to make it so that even Zibri can't break it. I bet the reason for the delay is because of ZiPhone. With ZiPhone, any idiot who knows how to point and click can jailbreak their phone. (including me, I was only able to jailbreak and unlock my phone up to 1.1.2, not 1.1.3 until ZiPhone came out) Apple has to keep their partners happy and insure them that the iPhone is exclusive only to them.

"Everyone"? Seriously, how many people are waiting for an iPhone SDK?

We at infurious have been waiting for an SDK for some time now and have a number of application ideas lined up for it. We just need to see how open the architecture is.

We were at an Apple Tech series in Edinburgh on November and one of the attendees there had an alpha release version, though very few actually got to glimpse at it.

I think the BIG, I can't wait, idea really belongs to that hugh group of people waiting for the coders results of using the official SDK to be released, knowing that it isn't going to break after every revision Apple makes to its software.

Give it 2 - 4 weeks after the release to start seeing some really tacky applications as people get used to the new coding regime. But like everyone else, I just can't wait.:)

sdk will be great!

I can't wait for the sdk to come out. There are a couple of apps I plan to build. I've already played around with some apps by compiling the toolchain on my computer and writing code by hand but I want to make some real apps with the official sdk. I think there will be some new and innovative stuff coming out for the iphone soon. Hopefully apple doesn't screw up the distribution model and not allow for small groups (1-several people) to release apps as opposed to only large companies. If Applications have to charge money, that would also suck, that would mean free and open source products would have a hard time appearing on the iphone. I hope some of the macrumors group can help test out my application when I release it!

HeHe, The developer conference would be the perfect place to preview the iPhone SDK.

Maybe they will continue to polish it and then release it at the developer conference.

LOL.

Most people are not complaining, just the vocal minority of Geeks is complaining. People have no clue what a SDK is and they are delighted with the capabilities it has Today.

This is no big deal, I rather the SDK is well tested and bug free. As a foundation we consider it a "Risk Multiplier", any bugs would be shared by all applications, that would be a pain.

I rather be good than quick out of the gate.

It sounds like to me that Steve is looking for moles.

Send a bit of juicy (but incorrect) information to specific individuals and watch to see if the rumors sprout open.

If they do, then the mole has been found.

It's a classic counter-espionage technique that has been used for ages.
