Captains Log: Day 6

Leaning towards keeping today as it looked like a fantastic piece of addition to a navy suit with black accents and got a compliment on the Milanese band, even though I dislike it.

We will see what tomorrow holds. ;)

Sound like you need to start a YouTube channel... :D

Just kidding.

#@(*(@*# you and your thread. Now I'm really wondering about whether I can live without the Nike+ watch faces and go with SS and a black nike+ band instead. You're going to end up costing me money dag nab it.

:D

Though I will say that with my current employment, the only times I'm in a suit are weddings and funerals. Too many of the latter and too few of the former for my tastes lately though. :(

I used a fenix 3 (also ~85g) for the best part of 2 years and moving over to the forerunner, was surprised how much of a difference it made. Maybe just how I feel. Each to their own, I suppose.

Yep. I've gone from FR610 to Fenix3 to FR920xt to FR235 to AW2 Nike+. Sure, I could run in any of them without any issue, but I sure did notice the extra heft of the F3. Didn't stop me, but it was noticeable and at time annoying.

Misery loves company!

Well not misery, just too many great options. Nice problem to have really. :)

Yes, very far into #firstworldproblems when we're choosing between one luxury item or another, either of which would feed a family for months in some parts of the world. :| Geez that wasn't meant to be a bummer. Let me plug http://purewaterinitiative.org whose leadership I know and to whom I've given a great deal.

Maybe a coincidence, maybe not. But I have given to them in the past and I trust and really value a small number of world changing initiatives and they are one of them.

Good on your friends for that leadership.

I went for a S0 SS 42mm sport band at launch, and picked up a few extra bands since, the nicest being an Apple leather band.

I love the look and feel of the SS, ran with it hundreds of times. But recently the battery performance started to drop, so I ordered a new SS. However when I saw the resale value of my S0 was almost zero, I had to decide if the $300 price difference was worth the enjoyment of the SS.

While waiting for my order to ship, I picked up a 42mm non-LTE S3 SG Alum this week to see if the difference was what I imagined it to be.

Everyone’s taste is different, but to my eye the SG looks fine and doesn’t feel as plasticky as I imagined it would. And I even think it looks good with the leather band; the SS clips are mostly not visible while being worn. My work and social environments are casual enough that no one notices watch models (but just not one of those ugly Blazes).

As great as the SS is, I had oversold the difference for my lifestyle. I liked the SG enough to cancel the SS order and put the price difference toward an iPad upgrade while Best Buy had the new models on sale.

I might regret the downgrade in screen and finish durability, but since this is pretty much a consumable gadget in two or three years anyway, I’ll roll the dice.

ive seen plenty in "business dress" wearing $20 timex watches with rubber straps. who cares?

for a product that needs to be replaced every 2-3 years, i'm going for the best value. and that's the sport models.

Well just because you have seen plenty, doesn't make it look good... It doesn't. At our office there is several that uses their Garmin sports watches with their suits and it looks **** - And that's the astonishing beauty of the SS Apple Watch. Looks fantastic with a classic buckle or the link and swap it to a Nike band and go for a marathon with it

To me the difference in look is pretty big and not to forget the sapphire display. Massive difference as well

Personally, I just took a DGAF approach. I wore a Garmin 610 as an everyday watch in business environments for years, including full suit&tie at client sites. If anyone cared I never learned of it. Same with a Garmin 920xt for a period of time, and then a Garmin FR235 with similar rubber many-holes band to the AW2 Nike+ which I've been wearing daily for the past year.

Now everyone's work environment is different, and maybe someone has someone higher on the ladder who's going to judge you for the brand and style of watch on your wrist regardless of the rest of your attire or even your ability to get the job done. I'm glad I've never been in that sort of environment.

That's exactly the problem in today's world, more and more people DGAF. So, as an Engineering Director myself, what does that tell me? This this person doesn't give a **** about their own appearance and how well they're put together, then they probably won't give any ****'s about their employer and representing their employer with their best foot forward.

That said: I'm not judging anyone based off the watch they're wearing. Just make sure your clothes are ironed, pant bottoms aren't frayed, your shoes are clean, finger nails clipped, hair/beard well groomed, teeth brushed ... you get the point.

Just my 2 cents.

There's a world of difference between someone wearing a dark-colored non-flashy sports watch with formal business attire and someone not taking care of basic personal hygiene.

Exactly. Someone who'd judge a person based on whether they were wearing the "correct" watch isn't someone who I'd wish to associate with.

Day 7

Tales from Time

Went for my normal every morning run but with this time Air Pods that I recently picked up and wow it feels as if this watch needs to be sold with a pair. They work so damn well together and the ease of volume raising with the turn of a dial is such a small detail that is a big bonus!

I havent purchased any other bands for the Space Black SS I have as I am still on the fence of returning it for the Silver one I have coming in the mail from Best Buy.

I will say I have firmly removed the idea of downgrading to a sport model as it just looks so stealth, classy, and fits so well into my attire that I feel the added benefits of the SS are worth it.

One decision made at least!! Now to see if I want to stay in the Space Black world or go to the shiny place.

I had a SS Silver S0 with Milanese loop. I tried the leather loop (returned) and sports band. However I am in Florida and outdoors a lot. With this the Milanese breaths, while the sports band becomes stinky with all the sweat. So the Milanese is great all the way around.
While outdoors and performing audits in warehouses my watch received many hits and bangs, but the display has no scratches (unlike my wife's Space Gray Aluminum). Sure the stainless steel casing has scratches, but I this provides character and never bothered to polish it.

I always had stainless steel and titanium watches. Not the high end brands, but the mid range e.g. Seiko, Citizen approx. 500 to 1200. I am not fancy on clothes. I spend money on good (healthy) shoes and a watch.

I skipped S1 and S2. With the S3 the speed is significant improved as is battery life. Add GPS, Water Resistance, LTE etc. and now it was time to upgrade.

With all of this I went this time for the Space Black Stainless Steel with Milanese. The LTE provides 8 GB more storage. In addition I signed up for Cellular. Once few times a year I work in a location where devices that can take photos (like phones) are restricted. The watch will be convenient for this. Besides doing a walk without phone I consider it an insurance. I have it when needed and it's worth the $120 a year.

By the way with low resale value I kept my S0 which is now my night watch for sleep tracking while the S3 is on the charger. This way I am getting another 2 years out of the S0 and have a backup if needed.

Summary:
In the pre Apple watch area I had at least 3 watches I alternated: Business watch, formal watch, outdoor watch.

The Space Gray Stainless Steel S3 with Milanese loop gives me all of that and more. This setup works in business, formal events and outdoors. It's technology, leading edge with LTE (gives another layer of insurance), while at the same it feels solid and look's amazingly beautiful.

I will keep it for at least 2 generations and with this and other reasons provided I have absolutely no buyers remorse.

One decision made at least!! Now to see if I want to stay in the Space Black world or go to the shiny place.

The real advantage with the space black stainless Apple Watch is the diamond like carbon coating over the regular stainless. It's almost impervious to scratches and will not show any wear, at least MySpace black stainless has no signs of wear at all. The regular 316 L stainless looks nice with the high shine, but will easily scratch and show Them. However, they can buffed out. The caveat to the space black stainless, is it's not as apt to pair bands with as the regular stainless is.

Agreed on all points and barring some crazy design change or enhancement, I want to keep this one a couple years. I think the durability is a big factor for me.
