Hi, I am actually now able to answer my own question. Apple will upgrade those who purchased a new Mac after October 1 for those living in Europe and I guess for the rest of the world. Follow the link on your country´s Apple online store.:)

up to date

can one do an 'erase and install' by using the disks sent out with the up to date deal?

Does one need to install the original 'shipped with machine' OS before running the up to date disks?

thanks!

Family Pack Leopard with new Macs?

Is it possible to get preinstalled Leopard on a new mac and get a family pack (but only with 4 installs) version of leopard for only $20 added to the final mac price??

The up-to-date version should be a full installation disk. You can do an erase and install directly from it. You would, however, have to go back to your old discs to reinstall the bundled software that originally came with your machine.

You need to do a full install of Tiger with the discs that shipped with your computer, and then use the up-to-date disc to upgrade that to Leopard.

cool, but what if its a NEW computer after oct. 26th?

Apple will begin shipping new computers with Leopard preinstalled and Leopard bundled discs ASAP...if you get one of those, you're golden. Everything you need will be on the single set of discs that come with the computer.

But plenty of people buying systems after October 26th will still receive systems with Tiger on them. In that case, they'll either receive a drop-in Leopard disc at the time of purchase (if they're lucky) or will have to go through the Up-to-Date process. Either way, they will receive a full Leopard install disc, but the bundled apps (iLife et al.) will have to be installed from the Tiger bundled discs.

Did that make sense? :D

oh i see. thank you it makes a lot more sense. if i am buying through my friend "family and friends" discount, and he buys through directly from an "insider" path. do you think the computer will come with leopard?

also let me get this straight. when upgrading to leopard from tiger, you do not get iLife 08 bundled, but when buying Leopard with a new Mac (if you somehow get a Leopard install disk) you get a Leopard and iLife 08 bundle, right? hehe i hope im not too off.

I don't really know anything about the "friends and family" sales channel, but I'd imagine it depends entirely on when you buy and how well they've timed things in terms of selling out of Tiger-loaded machines just as Leopard hits the shelves. Hard for anyone here to say how that will all pan out.

That is 100% correct. The only iLife '08 you'll get will be the one that ships with your computer.

All you get with the up-to-date program is the OS.

so is there any way to ensure u get Leopard and iLife 08 bundled? (without the $10 upgrade?)

this will be interesting..

We ordered some new macs via our reseller after the Oct 26th date was announced.. there seems to be a delay in the Macbook Pros.. but we shall see what they come with. I think i'll be sending off for the Up to Date thing.. but i'm hoping it will come with the Leopard OS on already..

just want to confirm...

Is it possible to get the student discount in store? I think that I have read that it is online only but I just want to make sure I am not making this up.

Thanks!

You are correct...student discounts (in the US) on software are not available in-store.

It is available in many on-campus computer stores, however. I know for a fact that the UCF bookstore has Leopard for $69.

If I'm inpatient and download a hacked copy off the internet, do you think that's immoral (I've already paid for Leopard, awaiting delivery)?

I don't know if it's moral or not, but it is certainly a violation of copyright laws. Don't ask about it here, don't post about it here. That's all there is to it.

It wasn't for Tiger. It was an "Upgrade" disk, you could only do "Upgrade" and "Archive and Install" using it.

You can do an erase and install directly from it.
Again, you couldn't do an erase and install from the Tiger "Up-To-Date" disk.

Ah, thanks...didn't know that.
No problem. Its a bit odd that Apple do this, given that every computer that Leopard can install on already will have Mac OS X on it anyway! Its quite annoying to have an up-to-date disk if you have a main HD failure, because you have to install the previous version of Mac OS X first, then upgrade, rather than just re-install.

I have an iMac and a MBP. Will I have to buy the Family pack or can I legally use the Single license?

You will have to buy the Family Pack, as the single version is only meant for one computer.

Virtual machines

Okay - expecting delivery of OS X 10.5 tomorrow (26 October) and I have a lot to learn.

Now then, my query is along the lines of what I can do with install disks that came with the Mac Pro OS X 10.4.?

I am toying with the idea of setting up a play station virtual based box probably running Ubuntu and wonder if I can virtualise the previous Mac OS as one of the guest operating systems. :p without compromising EULAs and so forth.

Good Luck

It can only be installed on a Mac.
