I really hope Apple has measures against scammers like OP and refuse the return. Because they have it on record that OP bought N devices and trying to return N-1, it's obvious that the sole purpose of his purchase was to cherry pick just one.

I hope OP looses tons of money on this scam and learns the lesson the hard way.

Yeah, what a scam. Legitimately purchasing a few devices because the company's quality control is crap to get one worth your $500 with the advertized "amazing Retina Display" and then using the company's return policy exactly how they promote it to return faulty (if opened) or extra (if unopened) units.

I know it's unrealistic, but I wish Apple would just move manufacturing to the US altogether. F Foxconn. I'll pay a little more for better quality.

Because Foxconn makes the screens? Because you're certain that the problem arises during assembly of the iPads, which Foxconn handles, and is not an inherent defect in the screens? Because you're certain somehow it could be done better if we did it ourselves in the US?

I'm not saying Foxconn is perfect, but you don't even know why the problem exists and you're blaming it solely on one particular party in the manufacturing chain?

Ugh. No iPad is perfect. Where does it end? Why are people this obsessed with Apple like an abusive spouse? Wouldn't they be happier just going separate ways?

Defects are one thing. A cherry picking journey is quite another. I used to work in retail. A customer once said "I've returned everything I've ever bought". I said "why do you shop here?" He looked at me as if he'd never contemplated it.
No iPad is perfect? hogwash.

My first iPad 1 was perfect. My first iPad 2 was perfect. My first iPad 4 is perfect. (I haven't bought nor have any plans to buy an iPad Air)

I have observed that with each generation, the percentage of defect-free, high quality iPads have dropped. I have learned that waiting 3-4 months after release to buy that generation iPad yields the highest probability of purchasing a defect-free unit while still being "early enough" in the product cycle.

I don't understand how people can defend the premium price of an iPad and at the same time tell consumers that they should settle for less than a premium product. These same people are then insulted when they are accused of being blind Apple fanatics. If it walks like a duck...

None of your iPads were perfect; they just fell within your standards. :) I'm only half kidding. This is a mass produced consumer electronic device, not a finely hand-crafted masterpiece. They are all built within a range of acceptable tolerances. This is clearly the case as screens from different manufacturers or lots are visibly different. These are not defects. Some will find it unacceptable but that's the product they are purchasing.

I very much disagree that QC has gone downhill lately. Apple is simply shipping more products. I've been following them for years and they've had some pretty spectacular defects over that time. I don't know the hard stats but recent products seem more durable and better performing than ever.

People should certainly return a product that was an unexpected disappointment but this ridiculous cherry picking is a bit over the top. If you know a particular product is heavy on defects (in your view) you should simply stay away and go for something that better suits your needs. Why reward a company for shipping crap?

I'm not sure that posters like you understand just how bad the screen defects are. Seriously it was terrible, I've used tablets and phones before I know what to expect and this was not it.

Well, I don't even want a "perfect iPad". I accept the other things like light bleeding (yes it is visible while watching videos in the bed) or even ghosting (saw that yesterday after I've sketched 15 min in Sketchbook pro and went back to the gallery with a grey background, my sketch was still visible for 30-50sec). You can't deny that Apple got some troubles in manufacturing perfect iPads like the 1st mini. So I'm buying the most expensive tablet on the market and I'm already accepting two different "defects" (light bleeding + ghosting, 1st mini didn't have that). The only thing I want is an even screen, without hue's. I saw it's possible to get one (already said that before, so why should I give up if I want that device?).

That being said: why do you get mad like this? I would also hate these kind of customers, but seriously, if apple would manufacture "perfect iPads" or iPads with an even screen color, I would save a lot of time, a lot of stress and a lot of anger. It's not that I'm doing it on purpose or that I'm having fun exchanging these again and again. I just want to save time and hundreds of calls to the apple store.

What would you suggest me to do? By the way, there is no apple store near by. I have to buy the iPads online.

You are doing the best thing to be honest. I exchanged 4 and even this one has the black spine. It doesn't bother me much unless I'm reading and even then it's not so bad, but at least it isn't yellow like my previous 3. I wish I'd done what you d suggest. I would have saved probably well over 5 hours on the phone to apple (seriously), many hours of waiting for deliveries and call backs, the stress of it all, the cost of going to the apple store and the time to install and set up new iPads constantly. Why should the customer be the one responsible to make sure the product is good enough. That's Apple's problem. Not yours or mine. In the end I got a feee cover out of it (Which I love so much more than a full case) but I don't feel that's good enough now. They should have given me 100 bucks off for all the troubles I went through on the phone etc. 2 of mine had yellowing so severe it looked like there was piiss under the glass.

I hear what you are saying but I've seen maybe two pics that showed real defects since the Air was launched. Maybe I haven't been paying attention but the issue certainly doesn't seem as prevalent as some would have us believe and I certainly don't think it warrants the behavior suggested in the OP.

I'm glad I've bought 3 iPads since the two I've opened first were terrible. Orange hue at the bottom + blueish bar at the top. I've already thought the last will be terrible as well, but woala! I'm satisfied with it. It still has light bleeding, but I can live with it, since the screen is crisp white.

Here is a photo for all haters. Cheers.

Told you. You have to do what works for you, and inarguably this method works! Congrats! I just wish that Apple would get their QC together so we don't have to do this nonsense. For people who think we do this for fun, we don't - I would much rather purchase one iPad and be asssured that it will be fine, but experience tells me otherwise, sadly.

Buying several iPads and refund the "bad ones"

You can clearly see those other two iPads have the yellowing issue. I see nothing wrong with what he did. We pay for a certain quality (and we all know Apple charges more than just about everyone else) and therefore you should expect it to meet your standards, providing they're reasonable, which in this case they are. The first one looks good. Glad you got one that worked out, OP. You're certainly entitled to it. Don't let these people tell you any different. Your dollar is just as valuable as theirs. Though they'd NEVER have you believe that.

One could easily say the third iPad has a "blue-ing" issue. What's wrong with the first two iPad's in that photo? Maybe you should take photos with a pure white background so we can all see the defect you've discovered.

Fine, then get some other tablet. Why subject yourself to this painful cycle over and over again. There are other tablet makers out there. Buy from them.

I think even people with actual OCD would be offended here. Unless buying and returning multiple iPads is part of the OCD you're referring to, I think there's a another and a better word for this behavior. Unfortunately, I do not know what to call it.

OCD, as in being paranoid, compulsive and obsessive about the condition of your screen, subjecting it to numerous, ridiculous tests that you would never normally do in a million years of normal use.

I totally agree that companies need to held responsible for their quality. Especially Apple that supposedly is known for the quality of their products. For my personal electronics I switched from Windows based products to Apple in 2008 and paid the premium prices for their quality. Since then between purchases for me and gifts for my family, I have purchased 1 MacBook Pro, 5 iPhones and 6 iPads. All of them have been great quality, with the exception of my most recent iPad Air which had two marks on the back. Initially the 2 marks really bugged me but frankly I didn't have enough time to mess around with an exchange so I kept the iPad. Then I put a scratch on the shiny bevel trying to fix a case that wasn't quite right. So I guess my iPad has been thoroughly christened so to speak.

I have scrutinized my screen upon hearing the problems on this website but at least to my eyes, I see no light bleed, pixels issues or lack of uniformity in the tint. So either I'm lucky that I have a good one or lucky that my eyes don't see a problem to obsess about.

What bugs me way worse than minor defects in the hardware, is the software crashing issue. I know there are many other threads on this. So for the OP, after you buy your multiple iPads and maybe find one that looks perfect, just know that as pretty as it looks, it won't work perfectly, just saying....

It's not my first Apple product. I've also got an iPhone and rMBP and I'm aware of iOS 7 issues. I'm running 7.1 Beta 3 atm and its damn good. Apple did a good job fixing many issues.

The photos weren't supposed to show the defects. It looked kinda funny so I made a snapshot. I could take 3 photos from the welcome screens, it was clearly visible that bottom of the screen was dirty orange/yellow.

This is good to know. I look forward again to Apple products that just work. Right now for the regular masses not running beta, they just don't. I've been an Apple girl and have convinced my whole family to switch to iPhones and iPads but the latest software mess should have been cleaned up before releasing to the public, at least that's been my experience with Apple products for the previous 5 years. Also, although I don't speak for personal experience as I have an iPhone 5, but from both my daughter's and husband's experience, the finger print reader is a joke. They both used it for the first 2-3 weeks on their iPhones and now are back to using their password codes. Again, another Apple flop - works some of time.

So at least for me, I think Apple has bigger problems protecting their "just works" image rather than "looks pretty".

There's a lot of competition out there for tablets and phones and if I wasn't concerned about having the great in sync across my Apple products, I might have considered other options this fall. I have several co-workers and friends that have gone from Apple to Droid platform products and are just as happy.

For me, I have no problem for paying extra for quality but if it's not there and continues to go downhill, I'll think twice for my next purchase. And for me, I also am a stickler for quality, but I don't have the time or patience to buy and return more than once or buy multiple products to try them out to return.

Don't worry, it will bother him eventually ;)

Funny thing that you are still trying to convince me :D But yea, as I've already mentioned, sadly for you, it won't bother me at all, since my rMBP got a slight light bleeding as well and I'm using it for more than a year ;)
