Even AFTER they factor in the BOM and refurb costs, they're making quite a bit.

Yes, they are, which is fair, since they are a business. Either way, they make that much LESS from each return and refurbish, than just a regular sale of a brand new machine. Therefore, every machine returned is a little bit of money lost.

Apple has a right to make money, and if people pay for it, nobody can tell them how to charge. You might think they charge too much (which I agree), but I still think the cost is well worth it because of Apple's design. I am willing to pay for a luxury item.

This behavior drives prices up for the rest of us and puts a few grains of sand in the stricter-return-policy hourglass.

And yes this is totally your style.

It's doubtful. Apple hasn't really blatantly raised prices (without some change they think warrants an increase) on anything in the past couple years. In fact, they've been able to go ahead and lower prices on many products. They just ditched the restocking fee probably because they could afford the returns without much of a problem.

Isn't there a restocking fee anyways?
I hope there is.

They just scrapped the restocking fee a couple months ago.

You are being naive.

+1. Based on what Apple has just recently done which is to waive the restocking fees, it even seems to me like Apple is encouraging people to return their purchases & by doing so to hopefully get more people to try out their products.

Go to the Apple store, buy the same 15 but with the stock drive.

Cancel your order.

Get on Newegg and order a 7200RPM drive.

Easy, no need to screw anyone else in the process. You took a risk to get max value on your unit. You're getting called on it, so man up.

This is actually a good idea, as long as he didn't order something like an upgraded screen. If OP decides to take this route, I also recommend just springing for an SSD instead, and using the stock 750 as an external.

Doing this is theft of services and is a crime. Would you actually get caught or in trouble, no but you created the problem and now you want someone else to take the hit for your poor planning.

What is wrong with people today, it's never their fault. Apple has zillions, they can afford it, lousy!

How about taking responsibility for yourself and suck it up and be a man!

Did you even consider calling Apple and explaining your unexpected circumstance? Maybe they could expedite your order?

If they cannot help you, maybe you could cancel the order so you can run to the store and buy one the is not customized and customize it later. It might cost you more to do it that way but remember, you created the circumstance, pay for your mistake.

Good joke!

You're talking about a company that made billions in profit (every quarter) - in the financial crisis.

I'm seriously tired of listening to people who defend Apple no matter what.

Merely %.00000001 of their revenue right? Clint, can you please forward a check to me of %.00000001 of your earnings. Sure it would be pennies but according to you, I should be able to make this request of you.

I'm not sure what you're talking about, but please point out a product that noticeably increased in price without some new feature that warranted the price increase.

The "I'm not sure what you are talking about" thing goes along with the naive thing. ;)

Anyway pretty obvious that increased costs get passed on to the consumer in one form or another.

Do it. As long as you don't mess the computer up, it's fine. Plus, it'll allow Apple to build up a stock of the refurbs, thus you'll be helping out the Apple fans with slightly more limiting funds. :D

I kind of did this....bought the 15" stock 2.2, took it home, used it for 4 hours overnight, then took it back in the morning to exchange for the upgraded non-glossy model. I originally felt bad, but hell, I probably brought a Macbook to someone who might otherwise have bought a PC:)

Apple is a company that is trying to make money. It made billions in profit because its products are good and people want to buy them. I agree that Apple probably has HUGE profit margins, but by supply and demand, their pricing is just fine, as people will just continue to buy them. I, personally, have no problem shelling out a little bit more money for luxury. Just because they are a luxury brand does not mean they have to cut down their earnings. When people stop buying their products, you will see their prices fall.

Well your situation is a little different. You were legitimately planning on buying the 15" stock model, but later simply changed your mind. And by doing so, you also upgraded, thus giving Apple more money, and thus justifying your actions. OP is actually buying a machine with the sole intent of just "borrowing" it, which is a completely different situation, morally.

? YOu are only going to be giving Apple more money if you advocate the "renting" of hi-end Macs for free for 2 weeks.

IT's the consumers that pay in the end.

Any friends that could step forward and lend a computer? Is buying a machine really the only option?

What this guy said. You can't borrow anyone's computer for a couple hours or a night or two? Friend? Relative?

Do you not have an old computer kicking around somewhere that you could use in a pinch? Obviously, there should be no problem if you buy and return it. You run the risk of possibly damaging something and then having your return refused--although that should be low (they would warranty any problems unless it was due to blatant neglect).

Despite the fact that "borrowing" like that should work fine, I wouldn't call it the pinnacle of ethical behavior.

I wonder if the OP did not post about his plan, would he still get all this bashing about his morals?

On a more serious note & I hope I don't offend anyone (if I do I sincerely apologize), this kind of thing is simply happening everyday, so what do you guys plan to do? Can you even do a thing to stop such incidents from happening? Furthermore, IMHO, this isn't helped by the fact that Apple is in fact "encouraging" returns by waiving their restocking fees....

you know why even Costco has to set a limit on returning electronics?
because *******s like him abuses the system.

Stop crying.

To the OP, i abuse this system all the time, I just bought and returned a CD drive to reinstall my OS. Done it countless of times to Bestbuy and futureshop. Return policies exist for a reason, it's if you "don't like the product". Just so happens I don't like all the products I use ;).

The big box companies make no money from your purchase of a computer anyways, they make their money off of product service plans and ripping us off with accessories we don't need. COUNTLESS times I've been forced to sell stupid stuff people don't need on behalf of Bestbuy. I'll tell you what, I was told once when i was a new employee to sell this poor chick a BRAND new computer and printer combo only cos her laptop had the blue screen of death. Yeah sure, she was ignorant as to what was wrong with her computer, but bestbuy sure as hell took advantage of that. SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOoooo in return I say

HAW HAW HAW. **** yeah. **** the system, and **** the big box companies. Trolling life all day err day. :D

Me too! Actually, if he is going to send that check to you, he should send that check to all of us.

Think it will add up eventually ;) ?

And, as some one else said, OP, if you had to ask... you already knew the answer (but want justification). Let me just say, sure you got a lot of people who say go ahead and do it. But a lot of people in this forum also think that if you accidentally leave your iphone or laptop somewhere it's perfectly fair game for some one else to keep it and they shouldn't try to return it. So I wouldn't really say a lot of posters on this forum really have much ethics.

Sorry, but he's not a corporation, and you're not his customers.

Turns out changes were made and now this big scoring project hit this week with a deadline of this weekend.
Changes will ALWAYS be made when you least expect it, Murphy's Law.

Perhaps borrow a machine from a friend/family member? Buying to return is really just a karma issue :p
