Moral issues aside, OP made a business decision, a gamble, a calculated risk if you will, to sell his machine early knowing full well that he would be without a machine until the new one arrived. New work coming in and no machine to do it seems entirely his own fault.

If Apple's return policy rules allow him to buy a machine, use it, then return it, he is still complying with the "letter of the law" so to speak. Just not with the spirit of the law.

That said, I'm guessing there is a restocking fee, which likely negates the improved sale price of selling his old machine early. Cest la vie.

Changes will ALWAYS be made when you least expect it, Murphy's Law.

Perhaps borrow a machine from a friend/family member? Buying to return is really just a karma issue :p

Though I don't believe in anything supernatural, the karma thing does bug me.
Plan A is to try to hot-wire my family PC to run pro tools temporarily. I'll try loading it up tomorrow.

There is also a slim chances of the 15" getting here by week's end, but I'm not counting on it.

Also gonna call Apple now and see I'd there's anyway to change my ship method.

Someone mentioned perhaps canceling your CTO and just getting one at the store? Replacing the hard drive isn't too bad if that's all your CTO was. You could get your machine now and fix the hard drive issue later.

No more restocking fee. Apple just recently did away with that.

Resolved. Moral crisis averted.

Thanks eveyone for your feedback, even those that spit at my feet as they walked by mumbling "criminal" under their breath.

I called Apple, and for 18 bucks, I'm upped to next day shipping. So there's a MUCH greater chance of it showing up by Friday. Perhaps even earlier.

Seriously. Thanks folks.

Well, if anything, I now feel much more comfortable trying the 13" MBP since I haven't been able to make up my mind. If it isn't right, I can always return it and get the 15"!

ethically i would take the hit.

go buy a non CTO mbp in store, before you go phone apple and explain the situation, maybe they can cancel your order, if not organise to return the CTO unopened to the store.

it is not like a 7200 drive is gonna cost that much. it *is* your fault, you got a better price for your old one. but the risk didn't pay off.

would be a good way of developing a good relationship with the manager of the store, which could pay off.

Karma? ... Careful you don't spill anything on it ... then your story sounds like ... I bought the Big Screen TV just to watch the Superbowl ... gonna return it after the game hehe ... unfortunately my Date threw a Pina Colada at it and I now own it.

The OP doing what they are doing is not even worth posting here ... post back when you dump a beer on it.

Read three posts up from yours, sit back, relax, and HAVE a beer.

So it looks like you got your dose of karma. Good. Ripping others off because you can will always be wrong. Because people do it all the time still does not make it right. People rationalize their bad behavior all the time, although I find it amusing that when the tables are turned so they get ripped off, they get upset.

OP - I'm glad it is working out for you, and I hope you don't put yourself in a similar situation in the future. There will always be consequences to actions - take the action, accept the consequences - and remember that seldom will you be the person to determine the consequences.
