The cable I use with the USB connector on my car stereo is starting to fray a bit at the iPod end. I got it with an iPod classic on Christmas 2008. It's been in my car constantly since then, save for taking it inside to sync (before I got the second cable when I got my iPhone), used every day (plugged and unplugged several times a day), and that didn't have an adverse effect on it. The cable frayed when I was charging my iPhone with it, and using the phone in landscape mode, and my finger was pushing the cable to almost a 90 degree angle, and that was me being negligent.

Lesson to learn here: Just look after the cable, dude.

Um, that's nice but some of us have better things to do with our time than going to the Apple Store every month to replace their poorly made cable.

By the way, easy does w/ the caffeine, sport.

Actually quite the opposite, I'm dead tired.

Anyways, my point is that despite the fact some people seem to be having this problem, that's no reason to overlook their amazing customer service and their premium quality software. The iPhone itself is absolutely fantastic. Just because the cable isn't idiot proof is no reason to throw away the iPhone like an idiot.... oh wait =p

Walls of text alert!!!
lol,
I agree. The title was sufficient enough for me. I have no idea why the OP is leaving, the wall of text caused my eyes to blur.

If he's unhappy with the iPhone, then buh-bye. Why create a thread, just get a phone that you want. We really don't care about your reasoning.

I agree that the cables separating are a separate issue from the quality of the phone but I need my phone to work for me in the background without having to worry about other things. Getting zapped when I unplug it from the wall is just not worth it to me.

But alas, I'm stuck with it anyways since I've got a ways to go before my contract is up.

I'm always a little confused by people who write such long good bye speeches yet come back again and again to post more--pretty much dilutes the strength of the original post.

Please don't leave us! I hope you continue to post and whine even after you give up your iPhone. We can't live without your great threads.

I've always wondering this and would like to know from the OP. For those that have frayed cables, how did you unplug it from the wall/computer/iPhone/iPod? Did you pull on the cord or on the actual plastic around connector? My wife has had her iPod for 4 years and we have yet to have a connector go bad and we don't pull on the cord itself.

I can tell you that I have never pulled on the cable to disconnect. I have always pulled on the plug itself. My experience is that it separates if you put pressure on it like when it's repeatedly coiled up, in my travel bag, pocket, etc. So yes, it does get used and there is probably some pressure on it, but I maintain that if it was better insulated around the joint, it would be able to withstand what I think is minor stress. Like I said, the cable on my b-berry was put through the same routine over a 3-year period and didn't have problems.

I was rather amused at some of the replies to my post. My post was written out of frustration, which I won't apologize for. To have a $200 phone and be using a cable that now has electrical tape around it seems south of silly to me. Those cables have been that way for a good while now and I don't understand the refusal to change the design. It's a safety hazard to touch bare wires that are plugged into a wall outlet. I don't get it.

I have never had a problem with a power cord from Apple. Makes me wonder what you are doing with them OP.

But see, maybe it's just me, but I don't see that as being negligent. That's just normal use to me. And like I wrote before, the blackberry charger I had was stretched, strained, etc. and still works to this day because it was cushioning around the joints.

If you had a google nexus, we might have a deal. I'll say one thing about Apple - they've got brand loyalty. But for me, if the design doesn't change, I won't re-up with them. I lived without the app store before a year ago, my life won't fall apart because I don't have it anymore.

To the OP, I'll do a swapsies with you. My Nokia N900 for your iPhone :)

For the record I do share the same experience with the cables. I've replaced it 4 times and all separate in the same area right above the re-enforced area. I always remove with the plastic bit not the cord itself. But it isn't a big enough deal to make me sell my iPhone all together.

Get over yourself we don't give a crap about you or your melodramatic rants.

The original iPod touch and iPhone cables are/were much stronger than the current one. It seems that the new iPad ones are stronger so we'll see how that lasts.

Exactly, TFL;DR. What’s up with all these good bye blogs lately?

And from skimming the posts it’s over a cable? WTF?

Marketing by the iPhone knockoff makers.

Happened before with Palm Pre, Nexus One.

Now the shill marketing literature mainly repeats: lock in / restriction
(Apple is SOOO restricted that Apple has the largest mobile App store ).

considering the ipod touch came out late 2007 i dont think thats possible.

He was probably using an iPod cable. I was using an ancient iPod cable until recently.

Once I realized how long this was, I realized I don't even know what the OP posted about. I'm guessing, he's giving up the iPhone due to the issues with the cable to charge/sync. Hmmmm, that's ridiculous. Good luck, boy am I glad I'm not in his position I'd be stressed out by every little detail in :rolleyes:my life.

Actually I can understand the OP's frustration. Apple put in billions developing the iPhone (or supposedly they did, justifying the high price), but their cables are awful. They simply do not have adequate strain relief near the connectors. This is true for virtually any cable Apple makes (headphones, chargers etc.). And it is a pain in the a$$ when a problem with a simple cable disables an expensive piece of electronics.

Apple rejects Flash because the 'user experience' is not good enough. Perhaps Apple should start looking closer to home.

For the record, I have a Mophie JP Air, so I use a third-party micro-USB cable to charge my phone. The cable I am using now was made by Balckberry - and it has adequate strain relief. I gave my Apple headphones to my daughter and bought a better set of headphones from Klipsch. Sure enough, the strain relief on the Apple headphones is already cracking after 6 months of intermittent use.
