TikTok owner ByteDance has been granted a seven-day extension on an order from the Trump Administration to sell the short-form video sharing platform (via Reuters).

The administration had previously granted ByteDance a 15-day extension of the order issued in August, which was set to expire Friday. President Trump on August 14 directed ByteDance to divest the app within 90 days.

According to a court filing on Wednesday, however, the Chinese company now has a new deadline of December 4 to sell TikTok to a domestic U.S. company.

ByteDance has also reportedly offered the U.S. government a new proposal aimed at addressing its concerns, a person briefed on the matter told Reuters.

ByteDance remains in protracted talks with Walmart and Oracle on a deal that would divest it of the social media app and create a new U.S.-based company called TikTok Global.

In September, a federal judge granted TikTok a preliminary injunction that temporarily halted an order from the Trump Administration that would have banned new downloads of the app in the United States because of the risks posed by their data collection practices and Chinese ownership.

I would shut that **** down yesterday. Anything that is harvesting micro payments and personal data from kids and simps to the dictatorship is a danger to all. That includes other platforms and payment systems that do the same.

In between a rock and a hard place
At this point, ByteDance can just wait out the 6 weeks left until inauguration day, during which time, all existing users can continue using the app.
That's exactly what they're going to do. Everybody knows this goes away with Trump leaving office. Apple has even gone back to advertising on Tik Tok.

Good. Lets get rid of this garbage, the sooner the better.

Looking forward to Biden’s presidency bringing down the hammer on domestic social media companies that have the same inappropriate data harvesting and privacy issues as Tik Tok.
Pigs will fly before Biden holds the social media platforms to account. Many of them donated millions to his election campaign.

I appreciate your sentiment but there is a catch here. Half of the problem is because we as Americans are cheap. We don’t like paying for things we use. So we end up with companies like Facebook. They find alternate ways to monetize their products. Not saying Facebook is good, it isn’t, but if they turned off data collection for $10/mo would you pay it?

lol Byte dance is super lucky Biden won.

Oracle and Walmart on the other hand look bad for failing to close the deal before the election.

Whether you like Trump or not, he was the first president to stop accepting China’s nonsense. Everyone will miss that under Biden once they realize what a pushover he is in comparison. TikTok is just a stupid app and just a symptom of the bigger issue.
Yeah, we should follow suit and stop accepting USA's nonsens. Coca-Cola and McDonald's are just super stupid "food" and just a symptom of the bigger issue of American crap culture.

What? That was such a fail of an argument. You’re telling me you’ve never once enjoyed a fast food burger? Or drank a glass of coke? Nice way to back up your accusatory opinions with facts, by the way

I think the argument was equally failed, and that was the whole point. It doesn't matter what I or anyone else thinks about Tik-Tok or Coca-Cola, there's a market for such stupid stuff. The government has no place intervening in that market.

TikTok may have it’s issues, but if You think President Trump being mad at TikTok is because of China... then you haven’t followed his personality very closely. ?
Yep. He got trolled. Politicized TikTok cause it’s “Chynnaaa!” And now that he lost has no reason to pursue this nothingburger any further.

What should we do about all the other stuff we buy from China? Enjoy Black Friday.
