Did you ask them why?

EFFA. Stands for early field failure analysis.

Basically Apple wants every defective or potentially defective unit they can get their hands on to check for issues that might go large.

If you bought it from Apple retail you don't generally have to make an appt. Just take everything and they will more often just do a retail swap. They might have a tech run a diagnostic scan and take some notes before it is wiped clean. But they generally try to fit those folks in even if it means having an admin pop out and do it. They even often set aside like 5 of each model to insure they have units.

----------

No crashes since the system restore tonight. We'll see how it goes tomorrow.

If it starts crashing don't wipe it again. You are killing data that could help apple sort out the issue.

Take it back. It could be a hardware issue. Maybe you got bad ram, it happens. That's what return policies no warranties are for. This is the time they are most lenient so use it.

----------

It's not software, there would be a lot more cases, mine haven't crashed once in the week that I've had it.

I think you mean it's not hardware or there would be many more cases.

But neither is true really.

Software could be due to old data from pre iOS 7 etc. Hardware could be a tiny amount of faulty whatever. Heck it could be both even. Or some screwy third party app not dumping the ram it was using properly. Who knows

My Safari was crashing so much that I swithched to using chrome but that crashes too. Should I return it? I bought on launch day so window is closing fast.

Safari is crashing like crazy on my Air. It seems to happen when I'm trying to zoom in for readability.. and bam I'm at the desktop.

It's not memory, happens with little running and just 1 tab.

Same here, most of the time i dont have any tab open... But i crash when i try to type in a adress.

Same on my iPhone 5. I bet that iOS 7 is the problem here and not 1 GB ram that every specgeek saying.

The only thing that worries me is that my old iPad3 with iOS7 was fine in this regard, but of course it could be a software bit that's specific to the new hardware.

I'm half tempted to grab the old iPad3 for a bit, but then the wife would get her hands on the Air and I'd be buying another Air.

Honestly I'm thinking Safari is just not that good. On both my rMBP and work iMac I have 16GB of RAM and Safari will reload the page when I swipe back. Firefox and Chrome don't do that. It's pretty annoying and one of the main reasons that I don't much use Safari for Mac. Apple needs to get their butt in gear and make Safari more stable!

It is a hardware issue if it is due to the low Ram.

Ummm, I don't think low RAM is any kind odd hardware issue. Same with the OP, not a hardware issue. I don't know why but iOS 7 just isn't optimized. It is odd though that iPad airs with 1 GB RAM are getting so many low memory logs and my iPad 2 with 512 MB RAM has gotten 3 since iOS 7 was released. Actually, since beta 2 or 3 of iOS 7 back in June.

Did a restore, not 10 minutes later I tried to go to Kickstarter.com and Safari crashed. I haven't installed 1 app yet, and only had one other tab open.

Ah, good point. Or will Apple stores re-set your initial 14 days if an exchange is needed due to an issue such as the OP is experiencing? Dunno, I've never been in the situation.

But I do love the idea of having a flux capacitor. ;)

I don't think Apple has a written policy regarding this matter but my experience has always been really positive dealing with them when you have issues. As long as you can show you have worked thought the issue in good faith Apple will always make you whole. I think the key is to have documented case numbers so you can prove that you tried to work through the issue.

I'm experiencing the same Safari crashing issue on my new iPad Air issue that I thought everyone else was experiencing. The low memory messages are showing up in the error logs. The support advisor had me upload the error logs. He immediately noticed the low memory errors in the log files and put me on hold to speak to his supervisor. When he came back he said to take it back to where I purchased it and exchange it for a new one. Besides the Safari crashing issue my unit seems to be working great and I have no issues with the screen. I'm not sure what I should do because I didn't want to get into an exchange loop with Apple. :(

(I realize there is a certain amount of irony here)

Probably the sites you visit. I get crashes at huff post a lot. That site is bad in many browsers. Otherwise safari is fine. Stay away from the porn sites.

Multiple Safari crashes here, too. I've done a hard reset, to no avail. I'm on Chrome right now but I'd rather use Safari for multi-device sync.

Also, after a charge, the battery charge shows 99% and decreases rapidly. I power down, then back on and the battery shows 100% and behaves normally.

It could be their attempt at compressing memory in an attempt to eek out this iPad release with only 1 gig of RAM.

Since IOS 7 is not optimized for iPads...I would end all the restores and worry.

Its a software issue and Apple will have to fix it.

Want to complain? Complain to Apple or where Apple is monitoring and thats not here at MR.

My iphone 5 does this some. What do I look for in the diagnostics? My phone will also reboot several times a week.

It crashing when typing in an address is just software. I've had that loads of times across multiple devices. All I did was close safari and re-open it :/

I have similar issues with apps, more often than not with Safari crashing and returning me to the desktop. I was at the mall for something else (it's a two hour drive to the mall, I don't go often) and stopped by the Apple store and spoke with a Genius, who grabbed the manager. The manager replaced it without hesitation (OK, he ordered me a new one, they're sold out at this point). The manager says they go back to Apple Engineering for early failure analysis. They told me not to wipe it before exchange, but to clear my data off of it by deleting my accounts, I presume they want the crash logs...

That is my thought and I'm not worried about it. I am not about to trade a super nice screen away unless I have to.

If you bought it on launch day, you have until the beginning of january to return it

I just loaded Huff Post up and switched pages and clicked on links like crazy. I also have 10 tabs open. I've never had Safari crash before and it didn't now.

But, I am getting crashes and freezing in graphic intensive apps. I close all open background apps and all is well until they load up again.

Never once had a crash in the year and a half I used my iPad 3, still running 6.1.3 the day I sold it last week.

I am *hoping* this is an iOS 7 issue ... I really don't want to have to exchange this perfect screen Air :(

That is concerning. How do you check error logs?

I just got an iPad Air yesterday (first iPad btw). And Safari has crashed 3 times already.

But I'm fairly certain this is a software issue not hardware and perhaps due to the low Ram on the iPad Air or more likely iOS7 glitches?

I'm personally not overly concerned yet but thanks for the heads up.

It might be a software issue, but get used to it. I have been experiencing Safari crashes for over three years with my first generation iPad. I was hoping the iPad Air would make things better, but after 36 hours of use it doesn't seem like they have made any significant progress.

You got that logged, right?
Call Apple now and report it

I tried the Chat option, but it said not available for this item, didn't feel like calling at the time. Is calling the only way to report the issue?
