These folks are clearly unemployed yet they have money to buy a new phone.

Lol at all the posters commenting about how idiotic this is and wondering why people would wait just to get a phone....

READ. THE. STORY.

These people are there for publicity.
Except that even if you're there for "publicity" or are getting paid some measly sum to sit around, it's still idiotic, and the people on this forum still have every right to call these people morons.

Publicity? I know I'm not going to click on these news articles and read a quote from one of these people trying to push his/her web service, www.isitaroundyoupayme.com or whatever.

Money? You'd have to pay me a hell of a lot of money to sit in one spot for you for three weeks straight -- way more than I make going to my job every day, which, for three weeks, is... well, a lot of money.

As I mentioned on p. 12 here there's countless other possibilities, too. But yeah. They have a few weeks to do what they enjoy in life during the day without further obligations, clearly they're jobless! And hobos and losers!!11 There's no other explanation!!1 Is that your jealousy speaking, because you'd like that amount of freedom with your time management?

Oh, absolutely I am jealous! I would love to have a few weeks, heck I'd settle for a few days, to do what I enjoy without further obligations.

But I can assure you that if I ever did have a few weeks to do what I enjoy, I would not spend it standing in a line waiting for a smartphone.

Getting up early for one day and getting your order in seems a lot better use of one's time. Unless you have technical problems, if you order at the starting launch time, you were almost guaranteed what you wanted right away.

sure you couldn't in places like NYC but where I live you can just show up at your carrier on launch day bout 30 min. after they open walk in and leave with your new phone in minutes and you wouldn't need to wait for ups/fedex or outages/delays

Yes, that is true as well. But personally, I can wait a few extra days ;) Its not like I look at my iPhone 5S and say "uh, what a piece of crap".

Where do they go to the bathroom?

There's an iDiaper app for that :D

Seriously, I've queued for concerts in the past (of course not days before the event, just early morning). You get to know other people in line and if you quit the line for a short amount of time to grab a sandwich or to go to the restroom you don't lose your place.

As far as I know the night before day one there are people outside some of the malls or the AS organising the queue, so they hand out pieces of paper with numbers and there are some roll calls during the night and if you miss a couple of them you are out. I'm sure someone can confirm that, I know some guys who camped before launch date and told me about the queue. Everyone say is quite funny, cause you befriend some guys next to you and enjoy the night.

As I said I did it for concerts, but only because I was able to get closer to the stage, and that's pretty cool if you love the band and want to enjoy the gig as much as possibile.
For a phone I can easily wait a week ;)

Sadly no one will read this because here at macrumors, many posters have add and can't be bothered to read past a headline.

Couple that with the opportunity to bash apple and its users and you've got it all.

Yeah, that was nice clarification and reasonably thoughtful insight into to the who and why, but you’re right, most of the comments are in “drive by” mode (ie., read title, skip article and posts, make comment, move on).

What’s _actually_ funny is some of the folks who have been critical are part of the BATA© group, and if you look at the posting history (and account for timezone conversion), they’re posting at 9am in the morning, 7,8,9pm and later in the evening, and 3-6am in the late-early morning - and they’re saying other folks should make better use of their time? HFS. :D

You might want to read the fine print. It might be an "upgrade" but the phone may still cost you two-thirds of one unlocked with an added two your contract.

This is what it says: "Upgrade Eligible
Congratulations! This line is eligible for an AT&T NEXT installment plan upgrade. Or upgrade with a 2-year service agreement and a $40 upgrade fee."

I can add a 5s to my cart and it will let me purchase @ $199.99 on a two year contract but states that I will lose my mobile share value discounts by selecting this option. They are pushing hard to get people on the Next plan...

Oh, my bad. I forgot we're all exactly like YOU.

Hey everyone, make sure to consult your "How to act like Bare" handbook before making any decisions today. Because CLEARLY this guy knows the best way to do anything and everything.

I hope Samsung has their marketing and advertisement guys on-site. Looking forward to their next commercial.

idk
just pulled up the account and it said I was eligible for upgrade. talked to friends that got their phone from same store same day and time and they're not eligible. and this was on a new line I added. just checked again still eligible

Well, helloooo, miss sassy line waiter with your red glasses, boots and shorts. :D

I don't think shorts and glasses constitute 'sassy' in this example. Just my opinion of course. BUT she does look like a phone nerd so I'm sure she will appeal to many.

It might be sad but if they're getting some reasonable money to see their place in the queue I can understand that.

Wouldn't do it myself but can understand it...

I might actually order online this time round. Don't have so much of an opportunity to just pass by my local apple store these days. Pretty sure using the apple store app to determine stock levels was a little hit and miss on getting my 5 a couple of years ago..
