I lined up at a Verizon store for the iPhone 5 on launch day. It was the first time I'd ever lined up like that for anything. Waited about two hours prior to the store opening and was number 7 or 8 in line. Met a nice fellow and we chatted about our experiences with our iDevices while we passed the time. I can't say I have a burning desire to wait in line like that again but it was an interesting experience just to say I'd done it.

To wait in line days before the keynote announcing the new iPhone(s) is bizarre. Those people must have a really good feeling about the phone(s) being available on the day of the keynote.

They've already got the publicity for the companies that they represent...as MacRumors picked up the story.

Perhaps they are doing this as a way show the silliness of waiting in lines like that.

55 posts in and it seems as though NO ONE has actually read the article....

Many of these people are PAID to wait in line, either by someone extremely wealthy who wants to be FIRST, or by companies to promote different products and such....

I'd guarantee, a majority of people currently in line are NOT there to buy themselves an iPhone.....

And even if they were, who gives a damn? Good for them if they want to sit in line for 3 weeks and have the resources to do so....

Makes no sense. These people are either unemployed & on benefits (and are therefore having their iPhones payed for by us) or are using their vacation time to spend a fortnight outside a feckin' building?

To be fair, when a person is employed they pay into unemployment with their tax dollars. You also have to qualify for unemployment, and to do so you need to have been employed. So we aren't exactly paying for their unemployment, they paid into it, and if you're ever unfortunate enough to lose your job you will get back some of the money that you've paid into it.

Unemployed camping for media attention / upstart companies' gifts / best toy they will ever have / $$$ spot for lazy rich fanboys.

Start the death-watch / countdown on Samsung executives seething of jealousy because of this record shattering fanboyism / free marketing for their more legendary competitor. Way to go, early campers. Let the mocking of Samsung continues!

If I ever become homeless, I now know there's one place where I can always stay and not be harassed.

"Move it along, you bum!"
"What are you talking about? I'm in line for the next big Apple release."

What is wrong with you people?!? 2 WEEKS? Don't you have anything better to be doing?

You're the reason Samsung can mock people for buying the brand rather than a good device since you can't even know the specs yet.

I think you're forgetting a few other possibilities:

-Students who are living on mom & dad's dime.
-Independently wealthy folks with nothing better to do.
-People who work from home and can take it "on the road" (or "on the square").

The whole world is not simply "the working" and "the moochers".

OK but,

1) Mom and Dad expect results in exchange of living on their dime. Skipping two weeks of classes may get you an iPhone but it's also likely to get you booted from mandatory attendance classes.

2) If one is independently wealthy they don't need to camp out. If they have that much money they can pay someone else to camp out for them or pass a few Benjamins to the manager to get escorted to the front of the line or back door (yes, that happens).

3) People that work from home can't afford to lollygag in line. It's not a vacation working outside a conventional office and w/o a support staff.

IMHO Judging others is what losers do these days :p

You never know who they are ---> They might be some media people, bloggers, App developers, Rich kids, Resellers. Why does it matter to us? :D

I last lined up for the iPhone 3G in 2008 behind about 200 people, during the infamous activation server crash. I got there at 6AM and didn't leave until about 3PM. Like you say it was in interesting experience with a lot of nice people, Apple employees handing out snacks and drinks, etc but I have absolutely no desire to ever do that again. Besides, Apple launches aren't really the huge line forming events that they were 5 years ago anymore.

So let me get this straight. Independently wealthy people have NOTHING better to do but wait in line for 2+ weeks. I know if I were independently wealthy, I'd probably pay for overnight shipping on release day.

People who work from home...hmm I do this sometimes and I'm pretty sure skipping the comfort of my home to work on the curb would sound about as appealing as watching paint dry on a humid July day.

I guess I need to turn in my fanboy card...

I am a 100% loyalist and a fanboy but even this is out there for me.

19 hours in line is my record for an Apple event.

not something I would do

I wait a month or three to buy new Apple products unless I have to get an immediate replacement (iPhone 5 for dead iPhone 4s).

I won't forget the great experience I had in buying my 4s at the 5th Avenue store though: there were many folks waiting in the reserve your iPhone line inside. I politely asked the manager if I could buy a new iPhone since I'm ready to upgrade. She mentioned 'there is the line', so I politely responded (truthfully) that I'm with a coworker and we have get back to work in 10 minutes. I can wait to get this phone.

No, no, says the Manager who flags down a 'specialist' to assist with my purchase. No waiting required.

And this is why

1) I stick with Apple

and

2) Won't wait longer than an hour for something I want in a store. (Yes, that's the impatient me but..).
