That's never happened in previous years, and it isn't going to happen next week. These people have their own reasons for doing this (none of which I understand). Ha!

I'm as loyal and Apple-y as they come, but I can think of 2,000 other things I could do with two weeks.

This kind of thing was cute and novel 4-5 years ago when all this was new and exciting, and the iPhone was "the little phone that could". But it's now an accepted, mainstream product owned by gazillions, so there's no real underlying "hook" or reason for folks to be doing this kind of thing...other than good old fashioned "look at me!" and other variations of first-world boredom and/or attention-whoring.

You see, there's this thing called "pre-order" (and there are these companies called FedEx and UPS). If you know how to go about it, you can *gasp* have your new iPhone delivered TO YOUR HOUSE, day one! It's amazing.

:)

And before I get labeled a "hater" or "fandroid", I'm typing all this on my iPhone 5 (and I've been an iPhone owner/user since mid-July 2007).

But I'm still not waiting in line for one!

Haha awesome you are absolutely correct

Guys... this isn't 2007/8 anymore... you can order your iPhones online and have them on your doorstep on launch day now.

Exactly!!!!

They must do it because they think it is fun to hang out and camp in front of an Apple store. If I was unemployed and had no kids and no wife then I might think it is fun too. If doing it with some friends it could be a fun to just hang out with those friends camping for a couple of weeks -- playing cards or whatever to pass the time. But I've got other things going on in my life that make such an endeavor really unappealing.

I just hope that Apple's pre-order system is all about having you login with your Apple ID and giving you a reservation number and a time to log back in and place your order. The online system falls flat on its face during every single iPhone launch. I always get my order in, but it always takes hours because by the third page of the order system the system grinds to a halt.

New iPhones announced

"Will Ship late october"

Well, I would never do this, but if that's how they want to spend their time, who am I to complain?

Surely for them it's as much about the experience as it is the actual product. And of course here we are talking about them... so they are getting the attention they want.

Lots of people will do the same sort of thing on Black Friday (or Boxing Day, for my fellow Canadians). I wouldn't do that, either. The longest I have ever waited in line for a product was probably about an hour.

Totally with you... Except the about complaining... It is our god given right to think of other people as idiots. :-D

Samsung will probably be there soon filming a new commercial. My version of a campout (which I did for the 4S) is setting my alarm at 3am, waking up, ordering the phone, then going back to bed.

i did it once in munich with my wife and some friends.
It was really fun and a great experience i never want to miss.

Many nice people, a great party, great talks, great atmosphere.
It felt like a big music festival. i miss it really

When the iphone 4 launched I actually got mine in the mail 3 days before launch but couldn't activate it until the next day but I still beat out those waiting suckers by 3 days from the comfort of my own home.

If I ever become homeless, I now know there's one place where I can always stay and not be harassed.

"Move it along, you bum!"
"What are you talking about? I'm in line for the next big Apple release."

LoL, quite genius :p

Perhaps you can get enough $1-2 donations throughout the year to buy the new iPhone on launch day as well ;)

It's an ancient, hoary tradition; celebrating the mythic heritage of Apple.

Like all traditions, it exists for the benefit of the celebrants.

Like most traditions, it has a self-imposed requirement for self-abnegation.

Long live tradition! Practicality rarely, if ever, has anything to do with such celebratory rituals!

What is hoary and what is abnegation? Define those for me Siri.
