I think this is all just one huge, embarrassing mix-up.

Somebody told these people that if they just waited, they could buy the new iPhone online. Being in New York, they misunderstood and thought they had to wait on line to get one.

And this folks is why people from the Northeast should stop saying "on line" when they really mean "in line." :D

(Also note that there are no reports of people mistakenly queuing up outside the Regent Street store in London...)

This is exactly why Apple is no where near any type of trouble. They have extremely dedicated fans of their products. I have never seen anything like it. I am one them!! lol! I think its great to these people that enjoy themselves.

Happy campers, wonder if samsung will show up and shoot some commercials for next gen galaxy

Who or What is paying those people to sit on 5th Avenue for four days?

I waited overnight for the iPhone 4. While fun, I won't ever do it again. There is no way I'd line up for DAYS to get the next gadget. Just order it online and wait for it to show up at your door.

Are you trying to disprove the English queue theory? I'm sure they're queued up somewhere!

OK but,

1) Mom and Dad expect results in exchange of living on their dime. Skipping two weeks of classes may get you an iPhone but it's also likely to get you booted from mandatory attendance classes.

2) If one is independently wealthy they don't need to camp out. If they have that much money they can pay someone else to camp out for them or pass a few Benjamins to the manager to get escorted to the front of the line or back door (yes, that happens).

3) People that work from home can't afford to lollygag in line. It's not a vacation working outside a conventional office and w/o a support staff.

1. My son is currently in the time span after graduating high school, but before college starts. He has worked for a few years to earn money, and took off from work a month before college to travel. If he really felt like it, he could be in that line, and it wouldn't matter. He wouldn't be mooching off us, or anyone else. It would be his decision.

2. Maybe these *ARE* the people the wealthy have paid to camp out.

3. Having owned a small business I ran out of my home fir a decade, I can confirm that it is hard work - but I did regularly take vacations. Waiting in line for a yet-to-be-announced Apple product isn't my cup of tea, but whatever floats their boat is no concern of anyone else's.

You seem to be concerned so much that they are being a drag on you and me and everyone else, you don't just think of the simple "it's none of your business what they do with their time." This seems to be a common occurrence, the people who most want the government out of "their business" also want to be IN the business of everyone they see as "slacking"...

Also, the first two in line are confirmed to be a marketing stunt by an Apple reseller. So NONE of your theories are true for them.

ITT: people who didn't read the article before commenting.

Most of these people are getting PAID to wait in line.

Not true at this point...Actually the article states...

"While early lineups are frequently done as promotional stunts rather than campers arriving simply as devoted fans, with some early campers at past launches even receiving sponsorships to promote brands while they wait, it seems that the bar is continually being raised with campers now arriving even before Apple has announced anything."

It does not say for sure that they are getting paid or as a promotional. Just in the past this has happened.

Not quite. When a person is employed, their employer pays into unemployment via tax. You can ask their employers how they recoup that money, whether it's by raising prices or other.

You're right, I was thinking of welfare. Regardless, WE aren't paying for people to be on unemployment.

I'm all for supporting Apple, but seriously? Waiting in line this early? Ridiculous.

I waited in line for the iPhone4 on launch day. Cued up at 4am for the store to open. I was in line for over 12 hours because the pre-order customers could just walk in and pick up. That was when I realized it was a huge waste of my time. I have, since, always pre-ordered online. Easier to camp in front of my computer.

That being said, I do go to the local Apple store and check out the launch day chaos though. Pretty interesting.

These guys are the real life equivalent of putting "Apple" in your headline to get more clicks.

Jesus. In this day and age you rarely even need to enter a brick and mortar store thanks to the internet.

Hell, you can even buy your next phone on your current phone.

You're right, I was thinking of welfare. Regardless, WE aren't paying for people to be on unemployment.

Unemployment insurance is normally paid for by payroll tax. However, there was a time there where it seemed like Congress was repeatedly passing unemployment insurance extensions one right after the other, and I wonder where all that extra funding came from.

So these people are camping for a product that (technically) doesn't exist yet, have no idea what the (official) features are, and may or may not (probably may) launch 2 weeks from now? o_O

These people are just sad.

I would love it if Apple would push the release to October. ;)

Now the best joke ever would be if Apple didn't announce new iPhones on their Sept. 10 media event. Or announced them, but didn't ship them until like mid-october. :D I swear I would laugh my ass off, but at least there's a chance these guys would realize how stupid their behavior is.

Apple should delay the release just to toy with them.

Assuming pre-ordering or even ordering for that matter is worth it. I think it will be even less worthwhile for 5-5S than 4-4S.

Really? The 4S had a better processor (A5), better camera (8 megapixels), Siri, and a slightly better battery. The 5S will have a better processor (A7), better camera (12 megapixels), better flash (dual), slow motion camera feature, new colors (champagne and graphite), Fingerprint sensor, slightly better battery, better front facing camera (2 megapixels).

So, it seems that the 5S will pack a lot more from the 5 then the 4S did for the 4.

Yeah... I guess. I just felt like Siri, at the time, was the best reason to upgrade to the 4S. I can easily pass up hardware improvements when my current 5 does everything I need it do. Now if they had a groundbreaking feature... then it would be harder to pass up.

Don't need flash... most picture taking is outside.
I can change color with a case.
Camera is already good enough - most pictures get distorted and screwed up with Instafilters anyway.
No lag on any app with current processor.
Battery already lasts all day.

I just don't see the 5S as a necessary product for Apple. They should have just released a 6.

Even still, unemployment is the sort of thing people like to moan about but everyone on here would take advantage of if they suddenly lost their job and were unable to find work. People only care about these things when it happens to them, and they think it never will.
