I think this is all just one huge, embarrassing mix-up.
Somebody told these people that if they just waited, they could buy the new iPhone online. Being in New York, they misunderstood and thought they had to wait on line to get one.
And this folks is why people from the Northeast should stop saying "on line" when they really mean "in line."
(Also note that there are no reports of people mistakenly queuing up outside the Regent Street store in London...)
