Does anyone have proof of the iPhone 2G activation servers being offline?

The iPhone only became vintage 2 weeks ago - I don't think Apple would have taken the servers offline 2 years ago while it was still supported.

The phone's vintage status has nothing to do with it. Look at all of the threads about problems activating the iPhone 2G via legitimate means. They all end up either having to call AT&T to make an exception or hacktivating it.

And then be lucky to get a couple hundred dollars for it because of the novelty? People who think these things are going to be worth thousands of dollars are just dumb. They sold 6.1 million of them (according to wikipedia), and I'm sure a lot more than a few people socked them away thinking they would get some huge payday some day like it's an Apple I (about 200 were made) or something.

i don't think this way at all... but i just don't see any reason to use it (maybe as just an iPod touch?). and given that it is still in mint, brand-spankin'-new condition, the op might as well keep it in the box.

I don't understand...

I had an iPhone "2g" that i purchased about 4 months ago. I had no problem activating it. I got UF to unlock it, and even activated it with a tmobile sim right before i sold it.

I had no problems at all!

edit: maybe about 6 months ago now that i think about it. And i used whatever version itunes was current at the time.

I want to have some fun with this. To me, makes no sense keeping it boxed up in the closet.

I am fortunate to live closely to an cellular repair service. 90% of their work is with Apple products.

I've had screen changes and even modded my iP5 with them (photos to follow...).

Their work is excellent (all the way from even having them unlock an iPhone- purchased here- that was locked to Softbank. That's near an impossible unlock!).

I'm going to have them unlock/activate this iPhone 2G for me.

Why in the h*ll would uou open a brand new iphone 2g?!?!?! Are you crazy? Im just asking because origional iphones in the box are quite rare.

Honestly, not that rare.
I wanted one and it was fairly easy to locate. Those few you see on eBay offered at thousands are a pure joke. That truly isn't the true value at all.
(An excellent way of testing that is to check on closed auctions and you will see none of those have sold.)

I picked up mine a few weeks ago for a little under $300. from a swap meet vendor (who knew I was looking for one).

Perhaps in a decade's time there will be more of a value but even then, keep in mind a couple of things:
First, there really were millions produced and even though a small percentage are unboxed...
Second- there must be an interested enduser. In other words, someone who wants this for a collection of some sort.
There are fewer of those individuals around than one would think. I know many iPhone users and various friends who collect things. None of them desire a MIB iPhone 2G.
Does anyone here know of such a person?
Without a collector base it wouldn't matter how scarce these might end up being, they would still only hold a nominal value.

idk, how much do Apple I and II cost these days?

The last (known) sold Apple 1 sold in an auction for $671,000

You don't know how uncomfortable that iPhone 5 makes me feel.

did you at least change the white panels?

I had an iPhone5 in black and my wife's in white. We simply had the screens (professionally) switched.

Looks pretty cool! Does it look awkward with the white panels and black bezel?

I'm not sure what you mean by the white panels.
Here's another couple of shots with my (new) iPod Touch 16GB:

Presumably the iPhone that was originally all black has the screen from the white iPhone, so it has a white border to the screen yet the rest of the phone is black. How does it look? Can you post photos of that one please?

I thought the activation servers were modified so that the 2G phones were automatically activated in an iOS sense, although not for cellular communications, as a way to prevent people using the 2G unlimited plan as a way to get unlimited data with new plans.

I don't know about version 1.1.3, but with my 3.1.3 one day a couple years ago it all of a sudden went from asking for iTunes to activate, to essentially being an iPod. I was sad because that was shortly before my wife got an iPhone, so she was unable to get on the unlimited data plan.

And FWIW I just turned on my 2G after being off in a drawer for several months and the battery level still looks full. Go figure.

both those look great!

good work, plus the other phone being your wife's, you can always swap them back if need be.

Looks awesome! I wonder if you could actually have Apple replace the screen at a retail store for the replacement cost of $150 but switch to a black bezel screen instead of the white one?

Back on topic:
It's activated! Running strong with AT&T. Required an older version of iTunes (on a 2007 Macbook) and some cooperation with 611.

It was a bit of a journey as I was told by a rep their job would be so much easier to activate this older iPhone if I would only allow the 3.1.3 update first.

I know really no one understands why I wanted the original (to this built) firmware, but thankfully the AT&T rep was up for a challenge and pulled a rabbit out of a hat.

The black iPhone 5 with the silver border or the white iPhone with the black screen looks awesome. Congrats on getting the 2G activated. :D

Edit. I meant the iPhone 5s with the swapped screens look great.
