Just curious. Were you lucky to get it on the old $20 unlimited plan, or has that completely been shut out as a possibility for the original iPhone?

This iPhone 2G is activated yet is using my iP5 SIM (with an adaptor).
I'll use it for a few days until the novelty wears off and go back, I'm sure, to the advanced and far superior 5.

Keep in mind too with this firmware Apple had yet to 'invent' the App Store or the ability to load apps on this model/firmware iPhone.

Couple that fact with the bummer of finding out even the YouTube app doesn't work along with access to iTunes is crippled (through no fault of AT&T nor Apple- but the programs themselves).

It is a bit nostalgic though to send a message. Remember? The full bottom half of the screen turns black (on purpose- it was designed to do this) and a white bar traces the success of delivery while the message in en route to its destination.

Outside of messaging/phone calls/ about all that our staring at with this model is checking on the weather and stocks and of course Safari. Think dialup when it comes to speeds.

Overall though, it's kind of enjoyable. No hassles for what it was intended to perform. So many advances since late 2007, yet really the majority of what I use an iPhone for this incarnation performs top notch.

I'll do without Shazam or Angry Birds for a few days. . .
;)

Oh wow. Now you really make me want to get another 2G. I loved mine. It tragically fell out of my back pocket one day into a bucket of water in 2010. :( Had been in use everyday since I got it in 2007. EDGE wasn't THAT bad, I used to sit in the car everyday coming back from school using it for 30 minutes straight. It was amazing.

Congrats on getting it to work. :D

Can you post some pics of the old way the phone used to work, like the texting you mentioned ? I also used to like the old icons on the iphone 1 screen, the music used to be a pic of an ipod, messages used to say SMS, it was a fun time. Though so antiquated compared to now, it still was an amazing phone back then. Despite the slower speed and lack of apps, the iphone 1 practically never left my hand. Remember when they had internet apps only ? I used to use them for some games and instant messaging.

I sure can, but keep in mind there is no way to take screen shots. I take a photo of the screen with a camera. I'm at work and can't do so until I get home...

As a reward to anyone who has read this far, here's a neat tip I just learned.
One of my favorite apps is the mobile Starbucks card. For those that use it, this app allows for the quick purchase at the register, no cash necessary. The app also allows for automatic download of funds when your balance gets to a certain level (determined by you).

Anyways, it needs 5.0 at a minimum to run (even if apps could be loaded on this iPhone), thus leaving me without the ability to take advantage of the convenience of it.

Here's a workaround:
Load the app on your iP3GS on up. Take a screenshot of the barcode. Load that photo on your older iPhone. Now when it's time to scan your purchase simply bring up the photo and use that to scan! The actual app isn't needed. All is kept track of without the need of your iDevice having the app loaded.

Back on topic:
It's activated! Running strong with AT&T. Required an older version of iTunes (on a 2007 Macbook) and some cooperation with 611.

It was a bit of a journey as I was told by a rep their job would be so much easier to activate this older iPhone if I would only allow the 3.1.3 update first.

I know really no one understands why I wanted the original (to this built) firmware, but thankfully the AT&T rep was up for a challenge and pulled a rabbit out of a hat.

Oh man that SMS icon...I'm very jealous.

My friend has an original iPhone 2G at his house somewhere...maybe I can sneak it from him...

Thanks Braddick, nor rush on the pics, just feeling nostalgic. Being a tech geek, I enjoyed every cell phone I've ever had, so I wax poetic sometimes. The iPhone being my favorite. I remember watching the Macworld presentation in January 2007, and thinking a virtual keyboard was going to be so stupid (I had a Palm Treo 700p on Sprint at the time). BUT, the more I read about the iPhone, the more I wanted one. I've had an iPhone (2G, 3G, 4 and now 5) since the price drop in September 2007.

Wow, this brings me back. The iPhone was unlike anything else on the market at that point. Truly fantastic.
