OP-you arent a bad person, or lame, for wanting to try beta software. Don't let anyone make you feel like that, ok? Some people just invest too much of their identity (and ego) into being a dev and having a "legitimate" reason to use beta software (as if no dev ever signed up just to try the software, and then never actually 'developed' anything). They think it makes them better, cooler, or somehow 'above' the person who didn't pay 99 bucks to get the 'dev' badge, and you mess with their image of themselves if you dare have the gall to dowload beta software when you haven't paid the 99 bucks.
Nevermind the fact that Apple gives each dev 100 udid slots. One hundred. Does anyone really believe that Apple believes each dev has 100 activated iphones to try stuff out on? Come on. Apple knows devs will give these slots to non devs, and thats exactly what happened here. The OP did nothing wrong. Apple knows non devs will get UDID slots. If it bothered them, they wouldn't make the slots available.
The guy already stated he asked his dev brother for help, and couldn't get an answer. He went through the 'proper channels and procedures' (asking the dev whoactivated his udid). He still had a problem.
So what did he do, the silly boy? He actually came to a mac community for help! Crazy talk, i know. And what did he get? Snark, attitude, and grudging help served up with much 'haha, you learned your lesson, now leave it to us Devs" posturing designed to make him feel small. All because he wanted to play around with his idevice.
One question. If Steve Jobs were 17 and just starting out right now, do you think he,d sit placidly and wait for the official reqawlease of IOS 5? no, he'd dl the beta and be tinkering like crazy. And you'd all commend him for it.
Tinkerers drive innovation. They deserve our support, or at the very least, a bit of patience and empathy.
