I would use list view if it was, you know, actually readable like it used to be:
To me it looks quite the same:

They introduced this one bug in the latest version where in album view A LOT of the time when I'm editing info and then exit back, it scrolls all the way back to the top.:mad::mad:

AND the idea that all of the changes I had done disappeared! All of the edits. It took me hours to edit scads of tracks and albums, and *POOF*.

Gone.

So somewhere in the rusty innards of iTunes, it actually saves the original data. Schizophrenic...

Like the shock that iCloud saves the ORIGINAL username and password it was started with. Whiskey tango foxtrot.

You must be using iTunes on a Windows machine! :D

Exactly what I've been complaining about. It's by far the most annoying thing about iTunes currently. Editing metadata becomes an exercise in frustration. It doesn't even only happen when you're editing metadata, but also when you're editing a playlist in its sidebar placed next to your library content. Each time you add an item, the library view scrolls back to the top. Members on the iTunes team surely would be annoyed by that themselves?!

You'd think stuff like this would be immediately noticed, but I just hope managers at Apple are aware of these UX quirks that are increasingly appearing in Apple software nowadays because it's obviously more difficult to get hard data on them compared to crash logs etc. that can be collected using telemetry. And beginner uses tend to place blame on themselves or provide vague reasons for being dissatisfied with a piece of software instead of identifying specific UX issues.

Also, here's another fun bug if you have the setting enabled to show the composer in all views:

edit: fixed, as of iTunes 12.4 ! :)

I'm happy to report that, so far as I can tell, this appears to have been resolved in the latest version of iTunes (12.4)!! :):)

Jesus, I'm at my wit's end. I've been an Apple user since the early 1990s and I have to say the company is going downhill. I don't know if they've just lost their mojo, are too extended with all the crap they're getting into, if they're paying too much attention to iDevices, or just don't care about anything but the Almighty Dollar.

But iTunes is an unmitigated disaster. I just ripped a DVD that my kid got for his birthday using Handbrake's Apple TV preset and iTunes is either rejecting it, or putting it someplace ambiguous. I searched for it in the iTunes search box but nothing there. I am about ready to chuck the Apple TV and iTunes altogether. I am not used to feeling like this about Apple.

/end rant
It gets worse and worse with every upgrade. I'm sorry I got involved with it.

I usually avoid these types of threads but I have to chime in at this point. I a fairly tech savvy and have used Mac's since they were first introduced, heavily invested in the environment and generally happy with things. But I just don't understand iTunes. I'm lost in it. Have all sorts of things happening and can't figure out why, even after searching out answers on various web sites.

I subscribe to Apple Music and Match (Family) and just purchased 2 albums which I downloaded to my library. All the tracks are duplicated and I have had to manually delete the duplicates (retaining the iCloud track, deleting the iTunes track but not deleting the track on my NAS). Shouldn't have to do that.

My media folder keeps changing from my NAS to my MBP (without any indication it has changed). So I am routinely having to go into Preferences and change it back, at which point it total rebuilds the library which takes a fair amount of time.

My wife and I share the same media folder (she has a separate library on her MBP). The tracks in my library are different than the tracks on my library (taking into account songs added through Apple Music).

I could go on, but frankly the whole thing (Apple Music, iTunes, Libraries, Match) is so convoluted that it's becoming unusable. Almost ready to delete the whole thing and rebuild it from scratch but not sure if that would even solve anything. Very unhappy.

I've rebuilt my itunes library & artwork for the last time.

Losing track of external drives and the chaos that ensues is unacceptable.

Whatever committe of lunatics is responsible for this schitzophrenic UI, needs to be publicly banned from ever working on anything ever again.

I'm still trying to figure out why iTunes keeps storing my new purchases in a completely different folder than the rest of my iTunes library. I've checked all the settings and they appear to be correct. I've moved my iTunes media off my 15" MBP and am moving it to my PC desktop now.

Previously I somehow lost all of my ratings, which is infuriating as I have around 1400 albums. I was in the middle of rating them all, nearly 50% through, when suddenly all of my star ratings disappeared.

I tried to start over on my work computer. Clean iTunes library, downloaded all my purchases and 60% of them showed up as duplicates. So don't bother.
[doublepost=1468440794][/doublepost]I don't want to sound like and old fart, but I miss records. Never had any of these problems.

Whoever is in charge at Apple needs to have their ass kicked for how bad iTunes is. It is horrible and continues to get worse and slower. Sometimes it connects to the iPad and sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes it recognizes Apps to add files to and sometimes it doesn't. 26139 said it right. They have no competition, it is a proprietary communication protocol so they have no reason to even care.

I agree that there is a certain bloat to iTunes. It makes more sense that all the device support should removed and iTunes could go back to being a media player. It would be easier if the iOS device controlled its own sync settings. Make the device show up on the desktop. Media could be added simply by drag and drop and/or double clicking device should open a control panel for sync settings or whatever.

I'm in the same frame of mind as the last few posters..... I'm reconciled to the idea that I'm going to have to break-out of the walled garden at some point :(

I'm reasonably tech savvy, but I'm really not looking for too much in the way of functionality/adjustibility - my dual priorities for my home tech are: simplicity and reliability. It does feel that having to deal with iTunes compromises both of those things!

All my new media tends to come from platform agnostic apps/sources (spotify, netflix etc) and I've been experimenting with Plex and infuse to try to find a good way of accessing my existing media library from my NAS. That either means buying a beefier NAS (plex) or managing my library "manually" (infuse) - both of which seem preferable to sticking with iTunes.

To be honest, buying an android phone might be the final hurdle to ditching iTunes completely.

I'm the opposite, my experience strongly has shown me that for the digital world, iTunes is the best and most stable. It's been flawless for me for the last 15+ years that i've used iTunes for my music library and I still think that it's the best platform for buying HD/4K film. GooglePlay have removed artists/titles that i've bought, Amazon is low bite rate MP3.

Just yesterday I bought a surf film from REELHOUSE. It downloaded as a basic 720p MP4. No metadata was includes with it. It had a separate subtitles file which I then had to use an app to try and merge the SRT subtitles file. It did not come with any artwork. It cost more than what it would of cost from iTunes PLUS my debit card got charged £1 for a non standard fee. (iTunes has everything in place for the customer).
After all of that, the MP4 and something got corrupted when it was uploaded to REELHOUSE as when I tried to Apple Homeshare the file from my MacBook to Apple TV it froze and buffered EVERY 3 SECONDS. It truly ruined my experience and even when it gets made available on iTunes, I won't sit through it again as my experience has ruined the film for me.
On top of that, the film makers are too busy promoting their film to even offer advice on a new upload etc.

In my opinion, this would not of happened with iTunes due to their incredibly high standards.

So for me, whilst no download streaming platform is perfect, iTunes seems to be the highest quality of them all along with Vimeo.

Don't be lazy. Read the first page, not just the first post.

I DID read the post. I did rip a DVD, and put it in iTunes. Then couldn't find it. Search couldn't find it either. I ended up finally finding it, under the original name of the ripped file, in Home Videos. I had to delete it, and change the name of the file, and re-add it to iTunes. I've had some success re-attributing a file so that it shows up under 'Movies'.

At some point, I'm waiting for iTunes to go full fascist DRM, and refuse to add anything 'ripped' at all. That would suck, and then I will be looking for something better, but until then, iTunes is okay. It has its quirks, but it's fully supported. *shrug*

So did you get your problem solved? Gotta admit, never had any iTunes problems and I'm always downloading MP4s etc.
Super funny forums like these though were loads of people bitch about a first world problem. I bet they'd cry even more if they got their iTunes taken away and had to use some Windows media player instead ;') ;')

No, you would be amazed at how many people that live in communist countries say they actually prefer it over 'freedom'.
