I woke up for the pre-orders at 3AM but most didn't. I didn't order because I need to buy my AT&T phone at full price. Can only do so in person now, so I'll be lining up sometime in the early morning.
When there is the ability to pre-order like there was last Friday, I don't understand why there are long lines at Apple stores. Last year it made sense b/c the pre-order was a mess and millions of people weren't able to get through (me included). But being that it was relatively smooth this year, it doesn't make sense to me.
For the die-hards, isn't it easier to wake up at 3am, go to your computer for 15-20 minutes and go back to sleep rather than waking up at 5am and sitting outside the store (or even waiting overnight in some cases)!? I get that some people enjoy the "experience" of it but I don't understand the excessively long lines. So what's the reason?
That's my perspective. I'd rather wait a little longer and order it online then dealing with the craziness at any of the stores tomorrow.
Everyfan should experience a launch day line at least once for the cultural experience! I did it for the 3G launch. It was big nerd party and nearby merchants were coming over with coffee and pastry samples
Once was enough for me, though, and now I just order online.
The real thing to do is go to your carrier store rather than the Apple store. Last year, there were 5 people outside the AT&T store for the 4S at 7AM on launch day. I'm sure the line will be bigger this year, but I'm sure you could wake up, get there at 6AM and easily pick one up. I almost wish I'd gone that route myself, given the large chance I'll miss my delivery tomorrow.
I got burned trying to get the iPhone 3G by going to an AT&T store before dawn. Second in line. A while before opening, the manager came out and told us they hadn't received any. I ended up standing in line at an apple store the following week. Hard for me to ever trust a carrier store again. The experience in line at apple was very good. They gave out reservation tickets so you knew they had a phone waiting for you. They gave out water and ice cream. Good conversation. I can't believe I waited so long in line, but it was a memorable almost fun experience.
Some people have jobs and cant wake up at 3am...wait they are camping out now? Then they probably have no job and have no excuse.
