I woke up for the pre-orders at 3AM but most didn't. I didn't order because I need to buy my AT&T phone at full price. Can only do so in person now, so I'll be lining up sometime in the early morning.

Why do people to camping? It's cold, wet and you have to get dressed to go to the toilet in the middle of the night.

It's an experience thing, some people just like being the first. I'm quite excited about my iP5 delivery tomorrow, but I have no idea when it will arrive.

Every :apple: fan should experience a launch day line at least once for the cultural experience! I did it for the 3G launch. It was big nerd party and nearby merchants were coming over with coffee and pastry samples :)
Once was enough for me, though, and now I just order online.

When there is the ability to pre-order like there was last Friday, I don't understand why there are long lines at Apple stores. Last year it made sense b/c the pre-order was a mess and millions of people weren't able to get through (me included). But being that it was relatively smooth this year, it doesn't make sense to me.

For the die-hards, isn't it easier to wake up at 3am, go to your computer for 15-20 minutes and go back to sleep rather than waking up at 5am and sitting outside the store (or even waiting overnight in some cases)!? I get that some people enjoy the "experience" of it but I don't understand the excessively long lines. So what's the reason?

I'm not lining up overnight but prefer the in store launch day excitement and experience.

theres lines because 2million people pre ordered the iphone 5. probably 1 million got the 9/21 delivery date. The other 1 million who preordered but got a later date will also be standing in line along with those who havent pre ordered.

Thats why theres a line. You have people buying 2 phones and cancelling the other...they shouldnt allow this. either pick one or the other

Some people have jobs and cant wake up at 3am...wait they are camping out now? Then they probably have no job and have no excuse.

I'm the same way. The 4S was the first thing I lined up for and it was a fun experience, especially because I didn't do it overnight, just crazy early that morning. But now I've been there, done that, and I'll stick with preordering unless there comes a year that that doesn't work out for some reason.

The real thing to do is go to your carrier store rather than the Apple store. Last year, there were 5 people outside the AT&T store for the 4S at 7AM on launch day. I'm sure the line will be bigger this year, but I'm sure you could wake up, get there at 6AM and easily pick one up. I almost wish I'd gone that route myself, given the large chance I'll miss my delivery tomorrow.

I got burned trying to get the iPhone 3G by going to an AT&T store before dawn. Second in line. A while before opening, the manager came out and told us they hadn't received any. I ended up standing in line at an apple store the following week. Hard for me to ever trust a carrier store again. The experience in line at apple was very good. They gave out reservation tickets so you knew they had a phone waiting for you. They gave out water and ice cream. Good conversation. I can't believe I waited so long in line, but it was a memorable almost fun experience.

They should know the day before how many they have though so before waiting in line, I'd definitely call.

I agree. If you are a fan of something, like so many are of Apple, the launch event is a unique experience that you want to share with other like-minded folks. I'm not going to judge those enthusiasts who are getting in line now as I type this. I say, enjoy the experience if that is your thing.
