The new 2.66 Quad encoding performance is impressive - can you run another intensive app - like a 3D game for example whilst encoding and have the game still be responsive? I could save a fair bit going for one instead of an 8-core.

Has anyone tried ripping a DVD using handbrake on the new 2.26 octo? Would it be quicker than the quad 2.66 and 2.93?

The speeds and times provided by wayne226 on a 2.66 quad are quite impressive to say the least, I'm just curious how big the difference would be with the new octos.

Thanks.

I've used the same presets as you on my Quad 2,66 (2006)... one hour (from DVD)

That will be the Superdrive with its riplock slowing things down.

Does anyone know if the current MP Superdrives can be flashed to remove the riplock?

The alternative would be to buy a second burner which is riplockable for fast ripping leaving the Superdrive untouched for warranty.

Unfortunately it looks like the 8 cores are slower. I'm encoding Stargate Ark of Truth right now and only averaging 83fps with Apple TV preset. This is off the hard drive. My system is an 8 core 2.93 with 6GB RAM.

This is somewhat disappointing, there has to be something wrong somewhere. The 2.66 Quad outperforming an octo 2.93 in h.264 encoding? Am I missing something here?

Actually this is not surprising at all if the software is not optimized for 8 core. I had the same issue back in 07 with Compressor when my friends Quad Mac Pro was beating the time on my 8 core by half. A couple months later Apple came out with an update that solved the problem. Luckily I'm not having that issue now with Compressor. The new Nehalems are almost 2x faster than the old Mac Pro's in Compressor.

Are you ripping to a scratch disc instead of the same disc?

I'm ripping from the internal hard drive to an external hard drive. When I try ripping from internal to internal... its the same speeds. No improvements.

How many cores is Hadbrake utilizing?

2x faster using compressor is definitely enticing, I want one of these new bad boys.

I noticed on my old 8 core 3GHz that I wasn't getting any faster speeds either. Perhaps there is some kind of 4 processor limit. On the Nehalem it was using 25-60% of processing power. Needless to say i was very frustrated when it was on the lower end of that range. Well it takes a while for software to get caught up with hardware. The new Nehalems are actually slower in many areas. For example they are slower in Color, RedCine than the previous 8 core with a ATI X1900XT. I can't wait for FCS3 and SL.

Yea no kidding, thank you for all the info.

just cpu usage on the early 2008, 2.8 8-core macs

i don't have any detailed numbers off hand. but from recollection, when i did numerous of encoding with handbrake 0.92 (last year)

h264 and some customized presets, i was hitting 93% cpu on the 8-core 2.8 mac. yes, i was running two instances of handbrake.

with one instance, it usually hits at best 60% i think.

Thanks for confirming the range of core saturation I'm getting with one instance running on an 8 core Mac Pro... 25% - 60%.

Do professional programs such as Telestream Episode pro, or Compressor 3 utilize all 8 cores? Or is the software just not up to par with these powerful computers.

What about the now defunct VisualHub?

Like Compressor 3, VH can be scaled* (i.e. grid/distributed/cluster computing). And again, it really depends on the presets used.
Handbrake doesn't support grid computing yet. However ... http://www.neuralspark.net/xgrid.html

*i believe it is not supported on 10.5, only supported in 10.4.x

"Xgrid allows you to execute programs using multiple computers—and multiple processors on a single computer—to perform multiple calculations in parallel."

note: it may or may not be beneficial. there're some/several instances where it may be slower, so just play around a little, google a little and read up on what you intend to do.

Update:
This may or may not be applicable, but you may check it out too. From my recollection, this is one of the easiest to install/manage, not to mention it works across the board with legacy machines (well, not too ancient please ;))

Now thats what I was looking for. How long does it take you to encode a 720p movie, or 2 of them at the same time for that matter?

Darn I haven't done a movie yet.. most of my DL are TV shows and I didn't even get a chance to time that. I'll run a test today from some MKV movie files I have on the ext. HD and get back to you. But you can calculate it out if they are 30fps movies or tv shows.

Looking at your picture again a can't help but notice that if Handbrake utilized 8 cores you could probably be encoding these 45 min TV shows in 10 minutes. Very impressive, you could probably encode full fledged 720p movies in less than 30min.

Where do you play your movies? Do you have an AppleTV? Have you had any issues with the constant quality setting at 59%? Sorry for all the questions, I'm just looking at buying either your system or the octo 2.66.

Ok sitting here with Mac Pro 09 2.26 Octo 8 gig of Ram, 2xGT120 cards. and 5 drives 3 internal 2 external. And bored.

What do you want me rip? And from HD or From DVD?
