Can we all agree that if you have an iPhone 5 there's no real reason to get the 5s?

  • Yes, if you have a 5 you may as well wait until 6

  • No, if you have a 5 the 5s contains enough improvements to justify upgrading now

I have an iPhone 5 (factory unlocked) and I will be upgrading to the 5s. Why? Because if I wait until iPhone 6 the value of a used 5 will have gone down. Right now the cost to upgrade to a 5s from a 5 with what I can get for it on the used market is pretty minimal.

On top of that I am excited for the new camera and processor. I was always skeptical when the iPhone 4S came out about processor speed, but it ended up feeling significantly faster than the 4.

See? Great example of my prior comment about selling a 5 to offset cost of a 5s. :)

If you're upgrading from the 5 to the 5s, I'm assuming you're not using an upgrade but buying it outright. That is a lot of money for just spec upgrades and a fingerprint lock. So pass on it and get the 6 as an upgrade. Save money, and get bigger improvements. There is a reason why lots of people are on a two year upgrade cycle. More bang for your buck.

False logic, you sell your year old phone and cut the amount you pay up front and its still a good deal.

I would love to get a new phone every year, but cannot justify the expense. Personally I believe the 5s comes with some substantial upgrades over the 5. If it came with a larger screen, I could probably have justified getting it.

All Apple iPhones have been very good for 2-3 years after release, maybe more. iPhone 5S may offer significant benefits 1 year from now over iPhone 5. I was happiest with my 4S out of any Apple purchase I have made (with the exception of my Macbook Pro). S phones aren't anything to scoff at.

I answered YES and I also answered YES 2 years ago when this same question was asked regarding the 4S and the 4.

Back then I upgraded to a 4S because I was still on a 3GS, and I had completely skipped the 4.

Well now I'm still on that 4S from 2 years ago, so, having skipped the 5, I fully plan on upgrading to a 5S come the 20th...IF I can get my hands on a 64GB model that is.

But if I had gotten the 5 last year, then I would be on the non "S" cycle and wouldn't be thinking about a 5S at all.

I am upgrading because I have the upgrade this year and my wife is on an iPhone 4S, give her my slightly used 5 so she can get LTE and tether faster to her ipad for work and get me the 5S. Also selling her iPhone 4s for at least $200 so its so negligible to upgrade, why not?

I'm thinking the same thing as you. I have an unlocked phone now and I'm going to continue to buy unlocked to keep a rate plan I have, so theres nothing stopping me from upgrading whenever I want. I'd rather enjoy the 5S improvements for a year rather than stick with my 5 only to loose money when selling it as a 2 year old device.

See, OP? We can all just make up our own minds regarding major purchases. :)

On don't be silly, now. This is MacRumors. Many people who aren't getting the latest device find ways to tear it down. Many people who are getting the new device feel they can't make up their own minds. Is gold too girly? Is the 5C in blue the one I should get? Is AppleCare a ripoff?

Fortunately, there are a few of us who know what we want and buy what we want without concern as to what others may think about motives, values, color choices, etc. . .

Thanks bunnicula for stating the most important reason for your upcoming purchase. You WANT it. Brilliant.

If there's little to no out of pocket cost, then maybe I can understand the upgrade. Otherwise I don't see much of a reason to upgrade.

There's no answer to this question as everyone's technological needs , finances opinion and desires are different
Regardless of what each individual does Apple will sell a record number of iPhone 5S and the waiting time will be long to get one

But that's tech specs. I haven't read any commentary from anyone at the event that said when they took a look the 5s was noticeably faster than the 5?

If real world usage isn't really that noticeable day to day is it really worth it?

Yeah but that's just a quick hands on. Wait until later this week when that embargo is released so that Mossberg and other blogs can release their reviews of the phone.

5S is a decent upgrade. At first thought it seems like it's not to most. Why? Same case design.

Go beyond that and it's a whole new device.

It's a 5 that's a bit faster, takes better pictures, has better battery life, works with more LTE bands and scans your fingerprint for a couple of tasks instead of requiring a passcode.

Those are the only differences.

Those are big differences.

Did you want it to chauffeur you around town?

;)

All jokes aside, and given that this is an S cycle year (the body size will not change, nor will display).

What did you think you might get?

You can say the same for pretty much the past two S devices also. Some may seem like its worth it, but it's all subjective to the end user.

No, definitely can't agree. 2 hours more web browsing time, more standby power, fingerprint sensor, improved camera and slo motion effects. Definitely a healthy step beyond iPhone 5. I've enjoyed my iPhone 5 for the past year but I'm getting the iPhone 5s on day one!

You and me both! Due to my kids being in school i wont be able to get down to an apple store until 8am, hoping for the best!

I'm not disappointed because I expected a small upgrade, and that's exactly what was announced.

For me, I don't play graphic intensive games so the A7 being twice as fast as the already blazing fast A6 is not something that impresses me. The M7 coprocessor doesn't accomplish anything that's not already possible, as far as I can tell. The iPhone 5 camera is already awesome (for me).

Therefore the only thing I'd truly appreciate is the fingerprint scanner, and that will only make a small difference.

I would have been more excited about better battery life improvements and an IGZO screen.

Indeed - completely agree. It's not a big upgrade for me but it obviously is for others.

You left out some things out, but even what you said is substantial for an uograde.

your sig...

While I wouldn't upgrade to the 5S if I had a 5, some people may want the new processor, improved camera, fingerprint sensor, etc.

I'm sure you're being flippant with your signature, but just in case... are you comparing spelling errors to the suffering of the many innocents gunned down recently? I don't see the humour - or the logic.

But, yeah, 5 to 5s would seem like its mainly an upgrade for the truly dedicated. I am getting the 5s, but upgrading from a dumby Samsung/iPod touch combo, so it will be a huge upgrade.

The 5S is a much bigger upgrade than the 4 to 4S or even the 4S to 5. The 5S basically lays the groundwork for next generation stuff. 64 bit processor, M7 chip. There are things in the works that will only be compatible (or will work better) with the 5S. So hell yeah, I'm upgrading my 5 to a 5S.

The camera is also IMO a significant upgrade. Just the auto exposure adjustment in pano shots has me excited. I hate taking pano shots where the exposure is completely messed up on one side of the photo. It's actually fairly common given how wide pano shots are by definition.
