One the whole, the use of buttons might reduce the tendency for people here to insult each other (why type when a click accomplishes the same end?). Mind you, I think in addition to up and down, there should be a third option: nuke.

I didn't realise that a down vote was an insult to somebody.

How does a downvote tell anyone that there is misinformation in a post or what part of the post contains misinformation? It doesn't. If there's misinformation in a post, the only helpful way to deal with it is to post a response, indicating what part of the post contains misinformation and offering the right information. With all the abuses of the system, a downvote doesn't even suggest that misinformation exists, as explained earlier.

You probably aren't accounting for the younger members who were brought up by parents telling them that everything they sayy and do is important. They also all got trohpies in Little League. You know, everyone's a winner.

I never suggested that it did. If you read my earlier post, I said that a posted response to either is more helpful and appropriate than an up or down vote..

Reasons why I like the "old" voting system.

I am in Asia GMT +7 and it means that by the time the first Articles appear on MR I am in bed.
So, I read those articles when I get up in the morning, how can I Post a reply to something I disagree with when that poster is already in bed, so I just down vote if I really disagree with his/her point or up vote if I agree.

Sometimes though I stay up and read those but there are threads which grow faster then I can read and post so that's another reason to up vote or down vote a post.
There are plenty of reasons to vote for a poster, and I for one only use valid reasons and have no hate or dislike to any poster.

What could be done better on the down vote button is that the votes will only be shown under a certain threshold, it will stay on zero until it triggers that threshold, and then if the number reaches another threshold it will be removed or collapsed.
It should also be made impossible to vote for people who are newbies or have votes less then a certain threshold, like with getting an Avatar, lets say 100-200 posts before they can vote.
Right now I really miss the old system, but then again, I didn't miss it when it wasn't there even before I registered.
Keep both or get the down vote button back.
Now, of to bed.(12.30 am)

You can post a reply to any post at any time. It doesn't matter if the poster you're responding to is online or not. When they return, they can read your response. If the conversation has progressed since you last posted, you can still post a response to any and all posts that you care to. You don't need vote buttons for that.

WOW, even though the majority wanted to keep them they're gone. I thought it was an effective way to tell someone they're a bit off base without violating forum rules. I guess I'll have to do it in posts now.

I guess you misunderstood their purpose. ;)

Thank you... Finally!

I am so happy the down voting has been removed. It just creates negativity and a way to harass others, IMO. Thanks for listening to your fans MR!

I don't happen to agree... I liked the downvote button, and used it responsibly!!! I'm going to miss it. It made the forums more interesting, for me at least. I probably would have downvoted this thread because there's an existing thread already. But now we can all just get along.

I'm glad its gone too. Always did annoy me, and i couldn't ignore it like some others.

See, we can still downvote. :D

Put the down button back! And show the number of votes for ups and downs, not a net amount.

What is to ignore? A negative total didn't mean you were wrong. It just meant people disagreed with you. You needed to evaluate the content and the number.
