A fraction of 3% wanted that. The poll clearly shows that the ~16% wanted the like button only removed. So > 97% didn't get their way.

You are absolutely right, my bad.

I guess that fraction of 3% is the site managers' votes?

That has got to be one of the most perplexing decisions following a user poll on any forum on the globe...

That's not what "Like button only" means. That option means to keep the upvote button and remove the downvote button. Why would the OP start a thread complaining about the downvotes and then have an option to get rid of the upvote and keep the downvote?

The poll wasn't written very well. I think we can all agree on that.

Still, that makes 83% percent of the forums unsatisfied, as opposed to half of them by opting for the old system.

Maybe it's a good idea to have some visibility for this poll here since a lot of people will be checking out the feedback subforum with the downvote button gone, and if still close to half percent want things as they are, maybe that 50% should get their way, because I think it's better to have half the people not satisfied than the overwhelming over 80% majority. :)

There's also a larger issue here, the downvotes and the upvotes where balancing each other out. Has anyone thought of that? Surely it must have been mentioned in this thread before. So, in essence having both up and downvote actually provided a more accurate assessment of any post via forum feedback. It was the aggregate of likes and dislikes.

I think the current up only system is broken. Make it a reputation system of a particularly good posts to be added to the users total points and have both up and downvotes in a post.

I agree.....the current system is broken.

As I and others have mentioned, these forums worked just fine before the vote buttons were added in. There was no real need from the community to add them in the first place. No one asked for them.....they just appeared one day.

Besides the negativity that they brought to the forums, another thing I didn't like about the vote buttons were how the ups and downs were netted together. It would have been better to show the total of each vote, that way people could gauge the popularity of that particular comment. Seeing +3 makes you think that only three people agreed with that post, but seeing "+23, -20" gives you much more info- it shows you that 43 people chimed in, 23 agreed, 20 disagreed.

If a vote system "needs" to be here, then it should show who voted which way. Make people accountable.

That being said, I'd rather there be no vote buttons, and let people who agree or disagree with a post or topic explain themselves. These forums are here for discussion, after all.

LOL so what appears to be happening is someone will slam a particularly inane comment and everyone will just rate that slam up into the stratosphere...

Unintended consequences... They are a b!tch

This forum is about 10% as fun now that we don't have the vote down buttons. What kind of retarded voting system lets you vote one way? Shall we start a poll with one option also? Bring it back or get rid of voting all together.

If a post is good - give it a +1. If it isn't - say so or ignore it. There's no reason for a anonymous downvotebutton more than negative atmosphere. If that's what you want then go outside and create it in real life and take the consequences. ;)

Or OR... Bring the down vote back.

Normally I'd downvote your reply, but now I have to quote you to tell you I disagree... Wasted bandwidth and page real estate. Too bad the fun factor of the forum needs a lower cap because of a few thin skinned individuals.

Well, why don't you just write a counter argument if someone writes something you don't like? :)

I won't just down vote him for having a personal preference but I think it should be back as well or just completely get rid of the voting system.
It's only in place for a couple of years and it worked well before it had this system.

On the other hand, times have changed, there are so many more new users and if we all would reply this forum would get flooded with useless replies so I myself think the system should be back ASAP.

But it could be improved, for instance not showing the down vote total unless it reaches a certain threshold, -15 for instance, this will be better since it won't show the first -14 and people tend to use it less when they don't see - votes when there is no need to.

I believe they pioneered such a system in the Soviet Union. I don't think it was the people's choice there either.

I'm sure there's a reason you just said the same thing the other guy did, to which I already gave an answer. I'm sure there's a reason, I just don't know what it is.

It's harder to up vote a post isn't it ?

Involves brainpower.

Reading comprehension.

Thinking.

Yes indeed. Much easier to down vote

Both are just as easy. Which way you vote almost always depends on which side of the fanboy spectrum you're on. Neither require much brain power, just a slight movement of your finger/hand a few mm in either direction.

Some thread splicing has gone down, it seems. My original reply was from another thread, to another post.

For every force there is an equal and opposite force. For every yin, there should be a yang. Now the system is out of balance. Either remove the buttons completely or have both buttons and show both counts instead of a net total.

If you want to be able to show the quality of articles to the outside world, then a simple + means absolutely nothing. You need to implement a proper rating system, like so:

This allows you to rate the quality of the article from 0 to 10.

Showing the up and down votes works very well. One can tell, at a glance, what people thought of your comment. Here is a good example. A person would have seen 0 in this case using the old MR system, which means nothing.

I have to argue that the downvote button serves an important role, much like the dislike buttons on Youtube, because it gives people a choice, a choice not to use it. Youtube has a reputation for trolling, but the like/dislike ratios tell a different story. The fact that the likes far, far outweigh the dislike on almost every every video shows how good and supportive the Youtube community really is.

If every one of those dislikers, few as they may be, had posted a negative comment it would have created a much more negative atmosphere. If every one on Macrumors who wanted to downvote a post writes a negative comment instead it would start a full-scale flame war.

In future if I don't like a post, I'm just going to quote it like this and add a little down button, and see how that goes.

If a post is good - give it a +1. If it isn't - say so or ignore it. There's no reason for a anonymous downvotebutton more than negative atmosphere. If that's what you want then go outside and create it in real life and take the consequences. ;)
