Can you keep unlimited data on Verizon still?

Ok so a quick question about a Verizon upgrade.

This morning at 3:01 am est I upgraded my wife's number (Line 1 - iphone 4)to get a 5s at the subsidized price. Ship date is 9/24. She has unlimited data but doesn't use much data at all, so no big deal putting her on a tiered plan. On the other hand, my data usage is much higher (Line 2 -iphone 5) and I need to keep the unlimited data on my line.

My question is, when the 5s arrives how do I get it on my line (Line 2)?Can I just activate it on my line ? Do I need to activate it on her line first? Once I get the 5s on my line I also need to get my iPhone 5 on her line,as we are getting rid of her iPhone 4.

Activate it on her line first. Then switch her to your iPhone 5. Then you will be free to put the 5s on your line. Are you really sure you want to put her on a tiered plan ? She's going from an iPhone 4 which is non lte to an iPhone 5 which has lte and her data usage could spike.

You are going to have to get a second SIM card.

I spoke with a Verizon agent using the online tool and just call in to have to switched.

No SIM swapping needed. You can verify yourself using the online chat function.

Weird, I did mine in store and they swapped out my card.

Man I wish I knew about this a couple days ago. I bought a 5s on friday and had to give up my unlimited data, but plenty of lines on our family plan have upgrades. Any chance I could undo it?

A co-worker of mine un-did it. Try to call in.

Do you know if your coworker had to return their phone and start the process all over again? I'm gonna give them a call tonight.

Not sure if she had to return it. Pretty sure they will just walk you through it when you talk to customer service.

I called verizon tonight and the rep I spoke with acknowledged the existence of the loop hole, and said I would have to return my device and everything would revert back to the way it was. I could then buy the phone for a different line on my family plan, wait a day, and then do the swap and it would stick. Now I just need these phones to get back in stock.

Yea definitely do it. You go through a lot of data on LTE.

And unlimited data accounts are becoming rare.

I ended up returning the phone today, and my plan was reverted back to the way it was with unlimited data after another call to verizon. Gonna wait until the phones aren't as scarce to buy it again and give this a shot.

Just speculation :) but I would say once Volte is official (next year at some point) than Verizon will pry unlimited from our cold hands !! But I'm optimistic so ill say in 3 years max :)

I have a feeling when we get closer, many unlimited folks may jump to the 6GB plan for $30 that Verizon is offering current unlimited customers.

Idk about that but I MAY keep one line with Verizon taking advantage of whatever deal they present to us at that time but I'm pretty sure Sprint and Tmobile will be in a better position to take my money by then :) so we shall see how this plays out.

Luckily for those of us with 5s, we can take our phones elsewhere for better LTE deals. Well, except for Sprint.

You can unlock sprint iPhones for domestic use :) just can't say that all services will be working afterwards.

Finally managed to find a 5S for a different line on my family plan, now I'm just waiting 24 hours before I make the switch. We will see! It looks like it can all be done online too.

Fair warning: I tried to use this loophole yesterday and ran into a hiccup.

I had three existing lines on a family share line, all with unlimited data. I added two new lines, both with iPhones 5s. I activated the new iPhones on the new lines. Then, I needed to replace the two new lines with "dumbphones."

I read several places discuss a "ghost phone ESN" that is a placeholder, allowing you to keep lines active, but without actually having a physical phone on the line. I couldn't find a way to switch the two new lines to the ghost phone ESN. It failed on the website, and two Verizon representatives (I called twice) refused to switch the lines to the ghost ESN.

I ended up searching around the house and finding two old dumbphones to activate on the lines, and then everything worked alright.

Bottom line: At least for me, the loophole required me to have two unused dumbphones on hand. If you don't have any, you may need to purchase two on eBay.

One other issue I encountered: when activating the two old dumbphones on the new lines, it automatically added a $10 75MB data plan. There was no way to remove it in the Data Plan settings on My Verizon. After searching around, I found that you can Block Data from the "Blocks" screen on My Verizon. After blocking data on the two dumbphones, the $10 75MB data plan was automatically removed.

I blocked data on the dumbphone, but when I view it on the myverizon "dashboard" it still shows that it has a 75MB allowance. It looks like that the charge went away when I blocked the data, but I'm wondering if it really went through.

You can just call customer service and they will remove the data entirely.

Yeah it looks like it went away. But I encountered a different issue. I switched the new phone from the second line back to the original, then tried to twitch my line to the new phone, and it asked me to change my data plan to one of the new ones. I guess you have to do a direct swap? Unfortunately I can't try that now either, the dummy line with the iPhone is stuck with this "Pending Order" status that prevents it from being swapped around.

When I had the pending order problem, I restarted my 5S and the pending order went away. I would suggest trying that.
