It depends on what SIM is installed whether you see the account manager or "APN changer." Even with that the SIM should "install" the correct APN without intervention. When I put an ACTIVATED AT&T SIM in my VZW iPad I do not have to change the APN and the VZW account management screen disappears.

Did you watch the YouTube video I posted above?

The guy needed to run a APN changer on VZW iPad before his activated AT&T SIM Card could work. Same thing happened to me too. Don't forget there are many types of AT&T SIM Cards, yours might be different to mine.

I have the Verizon iPad 3 (purchased in the US) and it works fine in Germany with an O2 sim card. I didn't have to do anything special- put the sim card in, type in the sim card code, boom works.

Service from O2 is ok. In most parts of any city I get fast 3G speeds. It doesn't work well at all on the intercity trains though. Basically if you're on a train going from one city to another just give up and turn it off.

Sometimes the iPad says I don't have an internet connection when I'm on 3G and the only way to fix it is to toggle the cellular connection on and off. Pretty annoying =\

I recommend getting a very small data size plan and not wasting your money on more expensive plans. I pay around 25 euros a month for 5 gigabytes of data and it's more than enough for all the web / facebook / email I can do in a month. The iPad / iPhone is very efficient at its data usage as long as you aren't streaming audio or video constantly.

Also, I just unlocked my AT&T iPhone 4 and the O2 sim card works in it too. I don't even have a cell phone number or voice/sms plan (data plan only) and it works. I can't make calls or send SMS messages but FaceTime / WhatsApp / iMessage / Skype all work beautifully as replacements. And again- I'm only paying 25 euros a month instead of 60+ USD like in the US.

Works using latest Verizon iPad (LTE model) in France. Verizon can add a very expensive international data plan, or you can get a 3rd party GSM SIM (no LTE, just 3G). I did this using iphonetrip.com before I left the U.S. and had no problems, various places in France.

I checked out the iphonetrip.com link and found this information that may be helpful re changing apn on apple devices. http://blog.iphonetrip.com/2011/01/...carrier-apn-settings-on-your-ipad-and-iphone/

i work at a phone company as a summer job right now and just yesterday a tourist from the US came to the store with an verizon iPad, unfortunately the sim didnt work ... we tried two different providers "T-Mobile" (the biggest one in germany i'd say) and "vodafone" and neither would work. the iPad didnt response to the sim

Too bad. My recent experience with Telekom and my Verizon iPad3 explained here: https://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?p=15456452

Check out a Tschibo sim - runs on the o2 network - no contract €19,95 /month for 5 gigs, throttled after that (€9,95 for 500 mb, throttled thereafter...)

Canadian, with iPad 3, just back from a month in Germany. Purchased Vodafone Websessions - includes micro-sim and time/data. It worked everywhere - hotels, restaurants, bars, the street, inter-city trains, S-bahn, autobahn.

Just purchase the packet, read the instructions, put in the sim and you're ready to go - GUARANTEED !

I took Verizon iPad out of the US and it works on 3G, but no wifi hotspot.

Unfortunately, personal hotspot function is carrier specific :(

You will need to find the right carrier and have the right plan that supports it.

I have heard people use the SIM card from a modem dongle (in which you will have the right tethering plan), and a MiroSIM cutter to make it work on iPad.

I'm not sure if this will help, but in the UK if you buy you an iPad from Apple it comes SIM Free and unlocked to all networks.

If you get a subsidised one on a contract from Orange, 3 or Vodafone, they come locked to that network.

So it may make a difference if you have purchased a carrier subsidised iPad, or one from Apple in the US, as it may well be locked to VZW or AT&T.

No Verizon iPad is sold with a contract. Therefore, there should not be any locked VZW iPad in the wild.

My ATT sim came out of my previously sold iPad 2. It was Plug and Play in the VZW iPad. If it was another carriers sim it would depend on how the sim was provisioned but a provisioned ATT iPad sim from a previously working iPad should "just work" in a VZW iPad. I did have to reboot it after putting it in for the iPad to work.

Mine was a Cingular SIM :).

unlockit.co.nz (go to website on iPad)
Choose carrier
Download
(It loads APN settings into the settings app)
It should work now

If you're really tight, mgoto a lidl store, €15 gets u 5gig but only caveat is 500meg a day which is plenty for me. If you want coverage on the ice trains, tmobile have repeaters or free wifi, but tmobile is 35€ for 5gig.

Thank you for posting your experience in this thread. I believe the US AT&T iPad 2/3 are not SIM locked. This confirms the other two instances could be just user errors.

Out of interest, how do you change the APN settings when you are in the UK? Does your UK SIM card has APN settings preloaded.

Preloaded. Swap the sim and good to go.

Same goes for O2. I've got one of their iPad sim cards as well.

I've got an iPad 3 that I've used on Verizon in the states. I picked up a Vodafone SIM and used the iphonetrip.com APN modifier script. Worked perfectly. While in Switzerland I saw my carrier as either Vodafone or Swisscom, but no hotspot functionality.

Swapping back to the Verizon SIM back in the U.S. it took an hour or so before Verizon would acknowledge that I had a valid data plan, but it worked eventually with minimal fuss.

In London right now.

I bought a Three SIM in London. Popped it into VZW iPad, went into Gerneral > About > Carrier and click on carrier version, a carrier update was performed automatically.

Went into Network settings, and Personal Hotspot wasn't there, so I reseted my iPad. After the reset, Personal Hotspot came back, Yay!

VWZ account page was gone, and replaced by the "APN Settings", which was already filled with "3internet", so no need to use APN changer.

When anyone goes back to the States, I recommend doing a Carrier Update via General > About > Carrier, so the carrier firmware can be reset back to the Verizon version. and you can then connect to VZW immediately.

Can I ask, how much was the plan on 3, how's the coverage and how much data did you get for your ££?

Good to hear that it worked almost instantaneously. Good tip about resetting the ipad. Thanks for the update!

Here you go:

http://www.three.co.uk/Store/Mobile_Broadband/iPad/iPad_data_plans

I got the 3GB one since we will be there for 12 days and we won't really be around any wifi.

In the UK, there are basically three levels of rate plans you can get.

1) Pay as your go (Prepaid)
2) Month-to-month rolling contract (w/ One month termination notice)
3) term contract (12 or 24 month)

The data rate you get depends on the type of plan you sign up. From the top, most expensive to least expensive at the bottom. Sorry, there is no free lunch.

(2) and (3) also require a UK debit card, because the bills are directly debited from your UK bank account.

If you are just visiting the UK for a very short period of time, you don't have much choice but to get the prepaid SIM cards. Your best option is to go and buy a few of these discount 3GB SIM cards from the eBay sellers. These are already activated and ready to go and just swap it out when it's empty. If you go to a Three store, the retail price for a 3GB SIM ls about £20.

It sounds like the three data micro sim is a good deal for uk travelers (im going to the uk next month) - does anyone have any experience with taking a AT&T ipad3 to the uk? did it also pick up the apn settings right away? how was it when you put your att sim back in back in the us? thanks!

I'm going to France next month and I plan on using SFR ... can't remember where I got this from but take a read ...

Re: Prepaid French 3G micro-SIM for iPad - it's not a problem! 24 April 2012

I used the SFR prepaid data card (micro-SIM with a data allowance; known as 'Kit pret a surfer iPad'/'iPad ready to surf kit') in Paris in March of 2012 on the new iPad. While I was there, SFR said that the terms of the kit referenced above changed, and that now the kit comes with 100Mb of data, rather than unlimited data for one or two days. Not sure, because I purchased a 500Mb recharger in the SFR store and had them install it, and I recommend having them install your purchase of extra data allowance unless you speak French and can navigate issues which could arise. I had all of it working before I walked out of the store. Not all SFR stores have the same hours. The one on the Champs Elysees has longer operating hours than some. Be sure to arrive in sufficient time before closing to complete the 10-15 minute transaction plus wait time, because at closing time, their computers, required for the micro-SIM purchase, will lock you out of completing any transaction. Regardless of how long you've waited, and how close you are to completing your transaction, at closing time, it will be, "C'est la vie," as they say. I also purchased, prior to arriving, an app called "Data Usage," which monitored my--you guessed it--data usage, so that I knew how much data I had remaining at any time (the answer was always more than enough for my 600Mb of data over 5 days). The only problem I had with the SFR data service was that the iPad would not always find the data connection by itself when first turned on. I would have to go into Settings, Cellular Data, then turn off Cellular Data, then turn Cellular Data back on to have the iPad find the SFR connection, most every time that I was in a new location. If I lived there, I would find a better solution, but for five days, it was a fine workaround, and I mention it only in the event that you encounter a similar problem. For the micro-SIM card (which came with 100Mb of data), I paid 9.90 Euro, and the 500Mb additional data allowance was 25 Euros. 100Mb data allowance was available for 9 Euros, 200Mb for 15 Euros and 1Gb for 35 Euros. Be sure to save your original micro-SIM card when removed and replaced by the SFR micro-SIM. When I returned to the US, I just replaced the SFR micro-SIM with my original Verizon micro-SIM, and voila, I was back in business. The service in Paris was 3G rather than "4G." In hindsight, 300Mb of data would have been plenty for a week of email, maps, reviews, travel info, etc. That would have saved about $13.50, and one can weigh that against the cost of running out of data.

-----------------------------------------

Hi, I am in France at the moment and purchased the SFR 3G microsim and it works very well. I have just purchased a 200mb recharge voucher and, rather than try to do it over the phone, typing in the 10 digit code to the IPad sounds easier. So, can you please tell me where I need to type the code.

-----------------------------------------

On the iPad go to Settings, Cellular data, SIM Applications, Solde/recharge, Rchgt Coupon, Par texto. You are then presented with a screen entitled Code Coupon? Enter the 10-digit code and hit Send. A message pops us saying that your topup is in progress. Switch off cellular data in Settings then switch back on again. You should now be in business.
