I wonder if Steve will say, at one point during his talk, "We're proud to announce that the Netflix app on iTV uses open-standard HTTP Live Streaming, which we're using to broadcast this event over the internet as I speak. It's a high performance protocol that produces great streaming video, as those of you watching right now can see..."

If that happens, it had better not be overloaded!

I presume that web caches at ISPs will be caching all the little segments of video, so the load will be distributed. And it's not like Apple doesn't have bandwidth - how is the new datacentre coming along?

Anyway, typically I will miss this today. Bah.

It's even trivial to implement (as TFA points out, VLC is almost there, for example).

Let's see if VLC can get a new release out by 6pm (UK) today then with full support... hey, it's only a HTTP refresh on the .m3u8 file (with a merge into the current playlist).

Yet another reason why I'm glad I bought my new MBP, I would've been gutted if I had to see it on my iPhone. It gave me a reason to open Safari for the first time in two weeks. :D

I really hope this is a success so they can stream more events. I had the best memories watching live Stevenotes and seeing everyone go insane at the same time.

Can't get my VLC play the sample stream

my OS is Windows Vista :( (sad, i know) and I have the latest VLC media player version.

I tried this link, which was supposed to work for HTTP Streaming non-supported readers:

http://devimages.apple.com/iphone/samples/bipbop/gear1/prog_index.m3u8

All that happens is that I get a window FULL of errors... :(

can anyone help me get this working?! PLEASE?

Update:

Actually, i thought my VLC "was" the latest version... turns out.. it was not...

so I simply updated it to the real latest version... and now here I am... being able to play the sample stream (in windows vista!!) for HTTP Streaming non-supported readers (read anyone without the Apple's streaming requirements) !! yay!! :D :)

No luck here, I tried Apple's quicktime to run the open standard. All I get is text. Maybe they will have quicktime support next year.

I can view it just fine using Quicktime on Snow Leopard.

Ah btw, don't paste the url into quicktime player, it doesn't work that way. I just clicked the link and it displayed it perfectly within Safari.

Pasting was my only chance, can't load safari on a work computer, they would know it in about 10 minutes. Sucks quicktime won't play it. I wonder if this is how they will keep the bandwidth down if Mac owners are the main watchers.

get the latest version and make sure it completely uninstalls the older version.
Follow the prompts.
if you have trouble installing with the new vlc...
You may need to reboot after it auto-uninstalls - when prompted chose the check box to delete any older settings and cache.

It works great ! . . .
But I think I'm going to just watch the keynote at http://live.twit.tv/ ;)

I do love being able to fast forward to any part of an HTML5 pre-recorded video and instantly get playback.

I see the "open standard" as a load of horse crap here.

Reason being is they claim open yet it only works on their OS bit fails in their browser. This is not an open standard if it is all controlled by apple. I am sorry but I trust Abobe a lot more on being open LONG before I would trust apple. Apple does not understand the meaning of the words open standard.

Would be cool if you educated yourself before going off half-cocked. Apple didn't design this standard, they are just one of the first to implement it. If you actually have tested how it works it is fairly awesome, like I mention above, the ability to fast forward or reverse to any portion of a video with virtually zero delay is magnificent.

But of course if you took the time to educate yourself, you would have nothing to gripe about now would you... Why not complain that others are just too slow in adopting this new technology, and not bag on Apple for leading the way.

Again, I don't think you understand how or what this is either. It is part of HTML5 and the ability to imbed and play video directly from the browser. Why would that work in quicktime?

I know people are annoyed that they can't play it because they have inferior or older tech available to them at the time, but I seriously can't believe that many people who don't have access to a mac, iphone or iPad is the kind of person who is going to be gaga and have to see this news as soon as it comes out live.

Regardless, I am sure many sites will provide updates and information and perhaps you can watch it later on in a different format. Apple is trying to push technology ahead, that is why they do things like this. If they just make everything backwards compatible and settle for the least common denominator, the implementation of new technology lags and takes forever.

I don't want to wait 5 years for HTML5 imbedded video becomes standard because people and developers are too lazy to do anything about it. So it is good Apple is pushing these things. It benefits us all in the long run.

iTunes AppleTV?

Anyone knows if there is a way to see it on my apple TV connected to my 42"?

Can we setup something in iTunes and stream it on the AppleTV??

Im at work now so cannot try anything...

I'll be watching this. I want Jobs to tell me why I absolutely need to buy a new apple device (ipod nano?), even though I already own an iPhone 3gs, 3g iPad and macbook. Keep doing what you do Jobs, and you force me to throw more and more money at your company!:D

No. AppleTV runs on Tiger. This requires SnowLeopard and an HTML5 compatible browser such as the latest version of Safari.

What you can do is hook up your Mac up to your TV, sit back and enjoy. That's what I'll be doing.

On the one hand, I have a new MB Pro with 10.6.4 and the new Safari.

On the other, I'm at a motel that has slower internet speed then dial-up. That's not an exaggeration, I've clocked speeds at 11 kbps. Will see if I need to read the live blog instead.

so with vlc you get the same video quality of the stream like in quicktime x? because i bet the stream will be in HD.

I'm really impressed with the clarity of the test screen. Someone mentioned that it's 640x480. But it does say 4x3 up in the corner. Wouldn't that make it 720x480? I also like how responsive the stream is when fast-forwarding or rewinding. Apple is moving forward with their ability to replace conventional television.
