But it's not ideal for the heavy content creation I'd use my Mac for. I'd much rather get something that will last me and serve best. Whenever I have the money to buy a nice Mac, I will. :]

I'll be in class until 11 PDT. I assume someone will record the stream and post it. Anyone know where the spoiler-free page is for this?

mplayer

Hi all,

For those of you who prefer mplayer to VLC, it appears mplayer accepts the URL and connects.

In Terminal just type:
Code:
mplayer http://devimages.apple.com/iphone/samples/bipbop/gear1/prog_index.m3u8

Of course you will need to download the mplayer source, build it and install it first. Building from source is generally considered safer than downloading a precompiled executable, since even open source programs can have spyware added to their executables.

My question is, what format is this stream doing to be?
In theory one could store it to disk using mencoder:

Code:
mencoder -o video.avi http://devimages.apple.com/iphone/samples/bipbop/gear1/prog_index.m3u8

Using wget, I downloaded the m3u8 file, but it doesn't specify the video or audio format...

People who don't have thousands of dollars to spend on a Macintosh.

PCs are only suitable when you remove Windows and put Linux on them.

FYI, Micro Center is running a deal where the Macbook Pro 13 is only $999. This is not much more than a decent PC.

Finally Apple is using H264 http live streaming! I'm hoping this is foreshadowing the announcement of Quicktime X Streaming Server and the return of a revamped Quicktime Streaming Server Publisher!

It would me great to build a video on demand streaming server with Final Cut Server as the catalog QuickTime X Streaming Server with a web front end/back end managed by Publisher.

Something similar to what Flumotion WebTV Premier offers: http://www.flumotion.com/webtv/index.php

Episodic: http://www.episodic.com/

or Kaltura: http://corp.kaltura.com/video_platform/overview

but based on Apple tech!

It came as a surprise to everyone tonight when Apple announced that they would be live streaming video of their September media event across the web. The news, however, was somewhat dulled by the fact that Apple announced that the stream will only be viewable on an OS X 10.6 Mac or an iOS device (iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad). The reason for the limitation isn't entirely arbitrary, as Apple is using a new streaming technology called HTTP Live Streaming which was introduced alongside Snow Leopard's QuickTime X and iOS 3.0.

While the protocol has been proposed as a standard, so far Apple is one of a few companies who has implemented it. As a result, the video will only be easily viewable on the specified platforms. There seem to be some advantages to the system over existing streaming technologies. Notably, there should be no router/firewall issues as the stream is sent over standard HTTP protocols.

If you're not sure you will be able to view stream, you can try loading this HTTP Live sample stream that Apple has provided.

For those who are desperate to watch the stream close to live, it seems likely that you will be able to watch it -- at least in stops and starts. The HTTP Live Stream protocol is based on very standard technologies. The stream is simply provided in an MPEG2 playlist (m3u file) that is added to as the stream continues. These standard playlists will load in VLC for both Mac and Windows. VLC, for example, will play the above sample stream using this url:

http://devimages.apple.com/iphone/samples/bipbop/gear1/prog_index.m3u8

VLC will load all parts of the stream into its own playlist. It works fine for this pre-recorded stream as the entire playlist is already constructed. The catch for tomorrow's live transmission is that VLC doesn't know that more will becoming, so it looks like you'll have to repeatedly reload the playlist manually to get the next few segments. It's not an elegant solution, but with some persistence, it seems like it will work.

Of course, if you're not so desperate, you can watch our text coverage here, on Twitter, or wait for the official stream to be posted later in the day.

I figured it out! They're going to tell us 4G is everywhere and it's all about data, and the iTouch is gonna use just data to replace the iphone, and the whole antenna position stunt was to convince people how crappy normal cell carriers are and how much better it would be if it were just straight internet data. Yep.

Wait...what?

You're all crazy. Good ol' stevo is going to announce the iWin. It's a real life i win button! It's revolutionary, magical, and best of all, an industry standard!

So I dont have to wait for the Apple to provide stream hours after the event.
Now I can lie in bed and watch what Job would like to mention amazing.

Event goes live at China time 01:00 am...

Thanks for the conversion
no need to find an international clock anymore :D

I wonder if Steve will say, at one point during his talk, "We're proud to announce that the Netflix app on iTV uses open-standard HTTP Live Streaming, which we're using to broadcast this event over the internet as I speak. It's a high performance protocol that produces great streaming video, as those of you watching right now can see..."

Which would be a bit weird, since the standard only works for Netflix for content protection reasons if it's provided to platforms that can't run third party code (or at least won't run third party code that Apple can't reject if it attempts to capture the streams) - i.e. iOS. Otherwise this is trivial to capture the streams and just won't get used by professional outfits.

So Apple would be advocating a standard for content delivery that's fine for iOS devices, but doesn't work at all for content providers on Macs - and ultimately just reinforces the position of Flash as being the go to solution for these things on desktop platforms. And it being the go to solution on desktops devalues iOS.

People can claim that DRM on streaming isn't going to work all they like, but the reality is that any significant content player requires it, and they aren't going to change their mind any time in the lifetime of any current iOS device, or indeed likely this decade, so if you want content you find a way to make that work.

These streams not playing in Apple's own player for Windows is not exactly "it just works" finest hour either.

Doesn't work with all versions of VLC, the PPC version for example. It does work on the 64 bit Intel version under 10.6.4. Doesn't work for me under Chrome on 10.6.4, nor under Firefox.

Is there any way to get it to work on a PPC under 10.5.8?

Typical Apple...our way or the highway.

You go ahead and broadcast it Apple so that only 10,000 people can watch while the millions of others who are interested (like me) will get the feed from MR or just wait for a STANDARD HTML website to post what's new 30 minutes after Apple's announcements are over.

yeah, but he knows we will buy the stuff anyway.

On my Xbox 360, I can stream 720p with surround sound on select movies and TV shows...

Read it again. He said over 720p. Meaning that 720p is the highest resolution possible through Netflix.

I installed VLC (ver 3.1.4) on my work PC, but the sample stream doesn't load. Is it possible that my work's firewall is blocking it, even though it's just over HTTP?
