UPDATE: Cancelled my web order because I rolled into a Telus store this morning around 8:15AM, no lineup, no waiting, and was able to snag a 256GB Silver! Someone at the store I went to had a sheet with stock information that she was checking off, it looked like they got a bunch of the 64GBs but only three of the model I wanted, and I got the second of three. The store people told me there was a small lineup earlier that morning and they opened at 8AM, and almost everyone there picked up Space Grey.

I can't believe with all the crazy Apple store lines, not many people thought to try the carrier stores...

Congrats!

I'm sure there are a lot of reasons people won't go to a carrier to get the phone. For example, the carrier will likely make you change your phone plan to something they're currently offering. Some may have grandfathered phone plans / retention plans which are much more cost effective than re-signing at a higher plan.

I went to my local Apple Store this morning at around 8h00 am and there was a bunch of guys waiting to get an iPhone X without having a reservation and one of the staff said to us that there were absolutely no iPhone X available and the best thing to do is to come back later today or make a reservation via the Apple web site tomorrow at 6h00 am to pick it up. Very disapointing !

Ugh my local Best Buy mobility has stock but you have to sign a contract.

Yep... same like mine. A lot of these stores have stock, but they said they were instructed that these phones are specifically for contract only.

And what sucks is that you have to take their premium plus / premium plans in order to get it.

My local best buy said that I can wait 2-3 weeks and then buy the device outright.

well ask and you shall receive.
called UPS multiple times and got through to a supervisor who forwarded me to the dispatch centre....my iphones will be in on time today... hopefully.

Yeah, my plan is way too good to give up. Will just wait for my Apple order

But don't you need to sign a contract to get one of those phones? Can you buy it unlocked at a Carrier store?

You can buy a phone for full price, no contract at Telus (I won’t speak for other carriers) and keep your current plan. There is speculation new phones may already be unlocked since the new CRTC guidelines require any phone sold after December 1 to be unlocked. And if someone has a locked phone, after December 1, the carrier has to unlock it for free if the customer asks.

My family had a great, grandfathered plan which we haven’t given up for years. We got lucky this year and the new plans match it, plus they gave me some loyalty discounts so we’re now saving money. And I got my phone at the discounted contract rate.

With Telus, you can pay out your device balance at any time without any extra cancellation fees. So I’m not stuck at all. If I wanted/needed to move to another carrier for some reason, I’d pay our subsidized device balances and move. It would be no different than buying it full price in the first place. In fact, it’s still cheaper as the months go by as the device balance goes down monthly.

I understand having a plan that is too great to give up though. That was us 2 years ago so we bought my mom’s iPhone full price from Telus and kept the great plan.

Understood: The next time do not make online orders. Just go to a store one of the following days after a device launch day.

I did, but I just kept my existing "plan". I have been on the same plan for a while, and it works for me, so it is no real change to me to just sign a contract for it. Worth it to me for the $600 savings on the X anyway. If for whatever reason I wanted to cancel my plan in the next two years, I just need to pay out the remaining device balance (I think it works out to just under $24 CAD per month for early cancellation) which would still end up being less than paying for the X in full (unless I cancelled, you know, today).

As of December 1, 2017, all phones MUST be sold unlocked or unlocked for free. I would be surprised if most carriers are still selling them locked at this point, knowing they will need to unlock them for anyone that asks come December 1.

Which Telus location did you go to? Thanks

I'm in Richmond Hill and haven't received mine yet. Last year my 7+ was delivered close to 2pm.

ya, I normally get packages around 2 pm on Fridays. I saw a UPS truck leave my office (near Richmond hill). Hopefully, it's there when I get home

I'm on a grandfathered plan and was able to buy the phone outright. They just pulled up my account to make sure I'm actually a Telus customer.

This probably varies from store to store since I was the only person there not signing up for a plan or renewing.

I will make sure that the next time I do not get into their trap of ordering on initial day. Instead, I will walk into a store few days/weeks later and buy what I need. No expectation, no staying awake, no frequent checking of the order status, no feeling of desparation. I just do not need this negative feeling that I'm being left out and screwed by a silly company.
No enthusiasm left in me and I have to admit that it's a soulless purchasing need anyway.
And I promisse this to myself even if they would change my delivery to Nov. 3rd.
You got me thinking. The negative feeling is there and it's unshakable now. I took steps to add the phone to favorites, use apple pay, have mobile, ipad and laptop ready to place order, and I ended up with what I got. People are walking in to freaking Telus and buying on contract with no reservation, and did all this to give Apple $2k of my money for what? The joy is gone. My 6 still works fine, even though it's slow. I've cancelled my X order, which will have 0 effect to Apple but it's for my own internal peace. I won't get into this game ever again.

Plus, hey, maybe it helps bump one extra person soon. Good luck to all!

I'm hoping it does too! ;) The hype bubble is starting to burst a bit I feel.

Tbh this is kind of weird. You're mad that... what, Apple gives stock to the carriers rather than hoarding it all for the ones that go to them directly? If you were ordering from a carrier and the position were reversed I imagine you'd have that negative feeling anyway.

It sounds more like you were questioning the purchase overall, imo.
