Respecting the OP's point of view, I wonder if it would be as distracting/annoying if Apple flowed the black from the island to the top of the phone when in full screen video mode. In other words, making it more notch like in that specific scenario. Would be interesting to see if it's less annoying that way.

My main question over the island is the distraction factor, same with AOD. Phones are full of enough distractions already without even more little dopamine hits being added to the mix. We'll soon have all the answers.

I watched a review where a movie was played on the 14, I could not for the life of me take my eyes of the DI, It's just there in the way of everything, I don't think its something I'll get use to. Thinking of keeping my 13PM.
To me this is worse than watching videos on it. Seeing this in daylight.

I watch some youtube and news on my phone, but never would actually consume something I want to enjoy like a TV show episode or a movie on my iPhone, so this was a non-issue on the X and 12PM and continues to be a non-issue. If you are watching that sort of content on a device like this, I think it is a bit odd to state that the cutout cuts down on your viewing experience but that the 6.1 or 6.7 inch screen does not. I will watch episodes of TV shows or a movie or even live TV on a flight on my iPad or laptop, but when at home all that sort of content goes to a real tv.

They could always put in an update so that the Island doesn't grow in size when watching videos and switches to the standard notifications currently when watching videos or maybe some other solution as that was just the quickest I could think of

Is it not there in place of the notch which is always there?

Honestly I personally think the notch looks better but each to their own. Basically lost a bit of screen below the notch by moving it up to make the pill. Now it’s made that bit of screen unusable.

Maybe it will grow on me but all seems a bit pointless.

Until they figure out how to hide the camera and those sensors, part of the screen is gone either way. So it appears the idea with the island is to at least make it functional rather than just a dead spot at the top of the screen.

that is exactly what I was thinking too. It is also a camera picking up that and would it look like that with only your eyes even at that angle
lol i can do that with my regular notched iphone and i can see the black oled area isn't a perfect match to the black notch area since it has an anti-reflective layer under the screen lol

this website reaches so hard sometimes but it is very entertaining

That looks awful! The good news is DI is a stopgap until they put the faceID/camera under the display
I don't think the Island is going to disappear. They might keep it, but fill in the dark areas with information. under-display cameras tend to still remain visible, and/or look imperfect. They might continue the Island to hide that imperfection.

I imagine there are ways to minimize DI's presence.
it's minimal by default unless you us it for something. I have no idea what OP is stressing over. In its default state it looks less intrusive than the notch. Maybe I'll get my 14 Pro tomorrow and had it... but I doubt it.

Seems excessive to upgrade every time a new version comes out anyway. I just preordered a 14P to replace my XS because my wife broke her XS and in ordering her replacement, I saw that I could get an $800 credit on an upgrade with Verizon. Otherwise I might easily have kept my XS another year or two.

My advice is to take that $1000 and invest it in some kind of long term, stable asset. Your future self will thank you for foregoing one iterative phone upgrade way back in 2022.

With the idiotic island, Apple just doubled down on dumb.

What stable asset can you get in the current economy for $1000. A "blue chip" stock?
And the $1000 typically is a misnomer. If the poster has a 13 series, that phone has value, and unless they are passing it on to a family member, who then might be replacing a phone, which has value, etc., the new phone cost to them is only the delta from the $1000 to what they can get for their phone. If it is worth $700, the iterative upgrade is $300, or 30% of that. Just sayin'.
