To the OP: You made the right choice. I ordered a new Penryn MBP and cancelled for the same exact reasons. The June update will be much more significant with a new case design and a probable graphics update.

All you guys berating him for his decision, who just ordered penryns, are simply trying to justify your purchase because you probably waited months for the penryn update and can't wait any longer. If he can wait until June, that's the smart thing to do, simple as that.

i didn't buy the penryn, actually i bought the Merom when the penryn was announced, i'm just amazed how " confident" u are that there'll be a june upgrade with case design etc.
kinda remind me of the people who were DEAD SURE of the case redesign last WWMC.

The real big change in power and performance will be next January when Intel introduces its next generation of processor. I doubt you're ever going to see a sudden, dramatic change in case design. The case design will likely always be an incremental change. If you're gonna wait, you should wait 'til Spring '09 for the processor. Otherwise, just buy the Feb 2008 version. The June '08 spotlight will be on the second gen iPhone. Apple and Wall Street both know that Apple's future stock price rides on the iPhone, not on MBP. And with Jobs getting ready to retire (again), he sure needs that share price to go up quick and in a big way!

lol guys, montevina will be a no bigger update than penyrn. 10% speed increase... MABEY 15%. Plan to wait until next feb when Nehalam comes out if you want a major performance increase.

Thats right, get it one now, then sell it and get a new one.

but hey.. I guess some people can wait 6 months.. I'd laugh if you bought it 6 months down the road and after that week find out that there is another one coming out..

will you cancel your order again and wait another 6 months?

i will stick with it because i need a laptop for college :p

Yeah, but you were saying it right before the update. Slight bit of difference there, no?

If consider two months "right before an update," then yah, I'll concede that point.

In my technology life, a lot happens in two months.

Wowwwww, someone returned their newly updated MBP cause of rumors about the next update?

Exactly what I was thinking!

I wouldnt think there will be a 100% chance for a case redesign BUT there will be an update to the motenvina FORSURE, apple does have to keep up with Intel's releases.

the next update will be again only a 10% increase in speed. and if you wait for a complete case redesign you have to take your chances with a rev a product.

there is no good time to buy except at the rare cases like PB G4 to MBP CD (and even then the C2D released soon after) or when they will switch from dual core to quad (or ?hexa?) core notebooks in 2 years or so.

aside of that it's best to wait till the specific feature you want (a graphics card, a solid state HD, a glossy screen, wimax or whatever) is availabe and simply buy then. for me it's a fast SSD because i use my notebook most of the time as desktop replacement and there the HD is limiting. if SSD's get cheap enough i can even imagine buying a MB and upgrade the HD to a SSD.

my two cents.

Yup, I think the general advice still sticks:

If you need a MBP now, buy it now. If you can wait, then wait. Just don't keep on waiting for the next best thing......

As I would LOVE an SSD drive, when the prices fall you can always install it in yourself in whatever version mbp/mb that you have.

Maybe were not seeing all the better increases in performance due to the age old hd's and once ssd's because common we will see it catch up and play well with our current and future mbp/mb.

Wait for as long as you are able. Otherwise buy.

Regardless, the full set of Nehalem stuff looks poised to leave everything else in the dust whether Penryn or Montevina. Where I live there is no WiMAX, blu-ray discs are rare, economical DDR3-RAM does not look likely to come out until at least few months after Montevina is released (so Montevina systems may not run at full-strength until after some time), and the MBP does not need powerful integrated graphics anyway. So I chose to buy now to maximise the time that my MBP can be king. WiMAX and Blu-ray (even though I hardly watch movies) can be supported later with an ExpressCard or portable DVD drive (which I plan to use anyway). You may have other considerations though.

Ah well, I'll update next year.

The only reason I can justify myself waiting to June is there is a chance there might be a redesign. I really don't care much about slight improvements though.

Ah blast I've had a hard decision. to give you some background. I'm 17 and am getting a Macbook pro as an 18th birthday/graduation present. I could get it as early as April or wait until as late as August. In January I joined the forum and began the weekly waiting game for the new penryn MBP. The more I waited the more I thought a new design would be included, however I did underestimate the internal update they'd give. When Penryn came out I was excited for the new GPU size and hard drive size, but slightly bummed that there was no redesign. The thing is I LOVE the current MBP design, but i wouldn't mind the magnetic latch and maybe getting rid of the plastic edging, although I kind of like it for its contrast, yet not. I can't decide. But overall I really like it, regardless of the fact that its been the same for 5-6 years.

Now this Montevina mumbo jumbo is getting to me. My friends Dad who is a major Mac user that works for Iomega and knows much more than I do tells me to wait until this summer and is pretty sure WWDC will yield a redesign. The smart thing would be to wait the extra 2 1/2 months. I know I should, but I'm tired of the way my life is right now. I now check this forum multiple times a day, and am constantly thinking about the MBP. Part of me wants to get the current so I can get on with my life. The other part wants to wait so i don;t regret missing out on possibly an amazing design (although the lousy MBA keyboard will probably be on it!).

People have suggested: Get now, wait, or get now then sell for Nahelem. But I'm not sure going through the selling hassle is worth it. Also, How much would I loose in a year from the $1999 starter price. I would get it for $1800 with a student discount and then if I sold it for $1600-$1700 I'd only have to cough up $100-$200 for a Nahelem one. What do people think and is selling easy?

Also a big worry of mine is the redesign will yeild many problems like the first 2.16 Ghz Macbook pro. Do you think we'll see these problems?
